Prof. Owunari Georgewill, Uniport Vice Chancellor Represents President Tinubu at Uniben’s 51st Convocation and 55th Founders’ Day Ceremonies, Charges Graduands to Embrace Educational Reforms.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR has called on Nigerian graduands to fully embrace the bold and transformative initiatives introduced by his administration for the advancement of the country’s education sector.

At the 51st Convocation and 55th Founders’ Day Ceremonies of the University of Benin, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, represented the President and Commander-in-Chief, delivering a message of congratulations, renewal, and opportunity.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Prof. Georgewill encouraged graduands, staff, and students across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions to take full advantage of the government’s ongoing reforms designed to strengthen institutions and empower learners. These include; NELFund Student Loan Scheme, Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Trust Fund, major curriculum upgrades, infrastructure expansion through TETFUND and related agencies, exemption of tertiary institutions from IPPIS, the Tertiary Institutions Governance & Transparency Platform, etc.

He emphasized that these initiatives are part of a deliberate effort to reposition Nigeria’s higher education system, enhance institutional autonomy, and create improved, future-ready learning environments for the nation’s next generation of leaders.

The Window to China in the University of Port Harcourt: A hub for intercultural learning and international cooperation.

As part of its commitment to fostering deeper China–Niger Delta relations, the initiative organized a hands-on culinary workshop introducing students to the art of preparing traditional Chinese dumplings and chinese fried rice. The Uniport Bursar, Dr Godpower Obah was in attendance.

The Window to China Initiative will continue to promote global competence, advance constructive China–Niger Delta engagement, and inspire the next generation of internationally minded scholars and leaders.

After more than a year of trial, Rivers State High Court has convicted and sentenced a 400-level Petrochemical Engineering student of the University of Port Harcourt, Damian Okoligwe, to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, Justina Otuene, a 300-level Biochemistry student.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Chiwen Nsirim-Nwosu ruled that the prosecution, led by Charles Obediah-Mbaba, proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, establishing that Okoligwe committed the crime. The court also held that Justina’s death resulted directly from the actions and conduct of the convict, Damian Okoligwe. The prosecution lawyer, Charles Obediah-Mbaba, who spoke to our correspondent after the judgment, hailed the court for ensuring that justice was served on the matter. Osat-awaji Otuene, elder brother to the late Justina Otuene, also spoke.

Recall that the case first came to light after operatives of the Ozuoba Police Division received a complaint from a neighbour about a foul odour coming from Damian Okoligwe’s room. Police say officers responded immediately, forced open the door, and discovered a Ghana-must-go bag containing the lifeless body of Justina Otuene. The murder trial began in May 2024, two months after the Rivers State Government took over the case.
