Chinua Achebe
Born Nov. 16, 1930, Ogidi, Nigeria
Died March 21, 2013, Boston, Mass., U.S.

Nigerian Igbo novelist. Concerned with emergent Africa at its moments of crisis, he is acclaimed for depictions of the disorientation accompanying the imposition of Western customs and values on traditional African society.

Things Fall Apart (1958) and Arrow of God (1964) portray traditional Igbo life as it clashes with colonialism. No Longer at Ease (1960), A Man of the People (1966), and Anthills of the Savannah (1987) deal with corruption and other aspects of postcolonial African life. Home and Exile (2000) is in part autobiographical, in part a defense of Africa against Western distortions. In 2007 Achebe won the Man Booker International Prize.

Prof. Eugene Onyeike Presents Uniport Valedictory Lecture As He Bows Out of Service.

After a meritorious service and at attaining the mandatory 70 years for retirement of Professors from active service, Professor Onyeike presented his valedictory lecture to the University of Port Harcourt community. He emphasized that the responsibilities of University administrators require certain innate characteristics such as integrity, fairness, compassion, courage, discipline amongst others as deviation from these would spell doom for the University.

He went further to categorise staff he called Any Government in Power (AGIP) into 2 viz DesirableAGIP & UndesirableAGIP and called on all UndesirableAGIP to repent and change their ways as the kingdom of truth is at hand according to his submissions.

The Uniport Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill was in attendance and he wished Prof. Onyeike himself a DesirableAGIP a happy retirement.

The Students’ Union Government, University of Port Harcourt, through the Office of the Director of Sports, Comrade Bolarinwa David Holla, has officially announced a general meeting for all Directors of Sports across the university.

The notice invites Directors of Sports from all Faculties, Departments, Ethnic Associations, as well as the NIDSUG Director of Sports, for an important session aimed at strengthening collaboration and improving sports coordination on campus.
