  • EDITORIAL: More Than a Ceremony — A Convocation Week That Reintroduced the University of Port Harcourt to the World.

The 36th Combined Convocation of the University of Port Harcourt was more than an academic ceremony. It was a defining moment in the University's history—a week where excellence met legacy, innovation met tradition, and one era gracefully prepared to hand over to another.

For seven memorable days, Uniport became a gathering point for scholars, alumni, policymakers, industry leaders, students, parents, and friends who came together to celebrate not just the conferment of degrees but the enduring impact of an institution that has continued to shape leaders across Nigeria and beyond.

From the opening Jumat Service and Convocation Service to the final conferment of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, every event reflected a University committed to scholarship, innovation, leadership, and service.

The week also carried a deeper significance. It marked the last Convocation to be presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill, whose tenure comes to an end in July, 2026. Throughout his administration, the University of Port Harcourt has continued to strengthen its reputation for academic excellence, research, infrastructure development, and institutional stability. The 36th Combined Convocation stood as a fitting culmination of a leadership defined by vision, progress, and an unwavering commitment to the University's growth.

The Vice Chancellor's Media Briefing set the tone for the celebrations, highlighting the University's achievements and aspirations while reaffirming its place as one of Nigeria's leading institutions of higher learning.

One of the most symbolic moments of the week was the Tree Planting Ceremony by the Best Graduating Students, Loveth Onyeguabor and Oyibo Daniel. Their act was more than ceremonial—it represented the lasting legacy that academic excellence leaves behind. As they planted trees within the University community, they also planted hope and inspiration for generations of students who will walk the same paths in pursuit of greatness.

The Red Carpet and Command Performance celebrated the University's rich cultural heritage and vibrant student life, while the Vice Chancellor's Dinner honoured 120 First Class Graduands, recognizing exceptional academic achievement and reminding the community that excellence is built through discipline, consistency, and resilience.

Thursday emerged as one of the defining days of Convocation Week.

The Research Fair and Exhibition transformed the University Library into a showcase of discovery and innovation, highlighting decades of academic excellence and groundbreaking research capable of addressing national and global challenges.

The Fireside Chat featuring Mr. Iyinoluwa Aboyeji OON —Co-Founder of Andela, Co-Founder of Flutterwave, and Founder of Future Africa—provided students and young graduates with practical insights on purpose, entrepreneurship, innovation, and life after school. His message encouraged a generation to move beyond seeking opportunities to creating them.

    Then history was made.

In a landmark announcement, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Distinguished Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, officially announced the appointment of Professor Princewill Chike as the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt.

The timing could not have been more symbolic. As thousands of graduates prepared to leave the University's gates to make their mark on the world, the institution itself embraced new leadership to guide its next chapter. It was a powerful reminder that while students graduate, great institutions continually renew themselves, preserving their values while embracing new possibilities.

  • "Your future is quietly being shaped by what you decide to do today."

Every achievement you admire started as a decision to show up one more time.

The graduates celebrated during Convocation Week didn't become exceptional overnight. They attended lectures when they were tired, studied when others rested, failed and tried again, and remained committed when the results weren't immediate.

Success is rarely built on one big moment. It is built on small, consistent actions repeated every single day.

This Monday, don't wait for the perfect opportunity, the perfect connection, or the perfect timing. Start with what you have, where you are, and keep moving.

    Plant the idea.
    Write the proposal.
    Read the chapter.
    Make the call.
    Learn the skill.
    Launch the business.
    Apply for the opportunity.

Remember, today's effort is tomorrow's testimony.

The difference between those who dream and those who achieve is the courage to begin and the discipline to continue.

So as a new week unfolds, choose progress over perfection, consistency over comfort, and purpose over procrastination.

  • #SundayStoary Episode 20

Sunday Stoary is more than a conversation—it’s a space where we gather to talk faith, purpose, and Christ, honestly and intentionally.

We often look at Galatians 6:14 and talk about boasting in Christ, but we rarely look at the flip side of that weight: in the exact same way, are you living a life that allows Christ to boast about you?

God intentionally creates opportunities for you to brag in Him, but so many of us lose that divine right because the moment weakness hits, we run back to our flesh. We treat our pains, our setbacks, and our scars like things we need to hide or cover up to look qualified.

    Dear Lights,
Your scars are not your shame; they are your credentials.

If you are not willing to be set apart, how do you expect to stand out or be exclusive?

Let’s Breathe. Reflect and journey together. 🙏

💌 Invite someone who is ready to stop relying on the flesh, embrace their scars, and step into total reliance on Him.

  • #SundayStoary Episode 19

Sunday Stoary is more than a conversation—it’s a space where we gather to talk faith, purpose, and Christ, honestly and intentionally.

Many people look at an "office" and only see a physical seat, a designated desk, or a title to hide behind. They treat it like a mere place to sit, waiting for a bigger room or a grander platform before they finally choose to give it their all.

    Dear Lights,
The grass isn’t greener on the other side….

What are you doing with the measure in your hands?

Let’s Breathe. Reflect and journey together. 🙏

💌 Invite someone who is ready to stop waiting for a bigger title and start magnifying their current space.

  • BOLD Conversations | Episode 20

Topic: Is Nigeria Getting Harder to Live In or Are People Just Complaining More?

Every day on the streets and across social media, the narrative is the same: the cost of living is soaring, the grid is unpredictable, and the pressure is mounting. We are constantly told that navigating daily life has become a extreme sport, requiring survival skills just to get by.

But if you look closely, the malls are still buzzing, new cars are hitting the roads, and premium events are constantly sold out.

We see a distinct divide forming. One side argues that the current economic reality has pushed the average citizen to their absolute limit. The other side suggests that Nigerians have simply developed a culture of hyper-focusing on the negatives, using complaints as a social bonding tool while actually adapting and thriving behind closed doors.

Is the "Nigerian dream" genuinely becoming harder to achieve, or are we just louder about our frustrations than previous generations were?

Tonight, we are looking honestly at our current reality. We’re asking:
Has our famous "Nigerian resilience" finally hit its breaking point, or are we just settling into a culture of recreational venting?

  • EDITORIAL: A Defining Week for the University of Port Harcourt Community.

The University of Port Harcourt is stepping into one of the busiest and most defining periods of the academic session, as several major activities are set to shape the coming weeks for both prospective students and graduating students alike.

First, the countdown to the close of the 2026 Post-UTME registration has officially begun. With registration scheduled to end on Friday, May 29, 2026, thousands of aspiring students are making final preparations to secure their admission opportunities into the institution. For many candidates, this period represents more than just an application process — it is the beginning of a dream and a future they hope to build within the walls of the University of Port Harcourt.

At the same time, attention is gradually shifting toward the university’s highly anticipated Convocation Week, which is set to commence on Monday, June 1, 2026. Convocation season is always a significant moment in the life of every institution, serving as a celebration of academic achievement, resilience and years of hard work. Beyond the ceremonies and festivities, it also reflects the university’s contribution to producing graduates prepared for the next stage of life and career.

For graduating students, however, the excitement of convocation also comes with responsibility. Clearance processes, documentation and other graduation requirements have now become urgent priorities. Many graduands are currently navigating the demanding phase of departmental, faculty and administrative clearances while also preparing for the activities lined up for convocation week. The coming days will require patience, coordination and timely action from all affected students.

Interestingly, this year’s convocation season is also creating opportunities for student engagement and media participation. Unique Stoary, a student-focused media and storytelling platform, is set to hold the onboarding for its Convocation Team this week. The initiative is expected to bring together volunteers and creatives who will contribute to documenting and amplifying the stories, experiences and moments that will define the 2026 convocation season.

As the university community prepares for these important events, one thing remains clear: the coming weeks will be filled with pressure, excitement, opportunities and unforgettable moments. From aspirants chasing admission, to graduands preparing for the final walk, and volunteers gearing up to tell the stories of the season, the University of Port Harcourt is once again entering a defining chapter in its calendar.

Don’t just aim to be seen.
    Aim to become undeniable.

    Build your skills.
    Refine your craft.
Stay consistent even when nobody is clapping for you yet.

    Because eventually, hard work speaks.
    Discipline shows.
    Quality stands out.

There comes a point where your results will speak so loudly that opportunities, recognition and respect will have no choice but to find you.

This week, focus less on chasing attention and more on becoming exceptional.

    Be so valuable.
    Be so consistent.
Be so good they can’t ignore you.

    Have a blessed week.

  • BOLD Conversations | Episode 19
Topic: Marriage Is No Longer About Love — Agree or Disagree?

We grew up on a steady diet of fairy tales and romance novels, all selling us the same beautiful promise: that emotional affection is the only reason to get married. But in today's world, the reasons people tie the knot are becoming openly practical.

We see couples partnering up primarily for financial stability, dual incomes, building a business, or raising children in a secure home.
We are often told that marrying for anything other than love is cold and transactional.
But what if emotional feelings are too unstable to sustain a legal, lifelong contract? What if marriage operates better as an economic team rather than a romantic romance?

Has modern marriage simply returned to its historic roots as a practical partnership, or are we settling for business arrangements because finding real love is too hard?

Tonight, we are looking honestly at modern relationships. We’re asking:

Does marrying for financial and lifestyle security make a union more stable, or does it leave it empty?

When bills pile up and daily stress hits, what is the actual glue holding a couple together?

Is romantic love still the ultimate goal, or has it become secondary to economic survival and social status?
