EDITORIAL | Uniport Demolitions: Beyond The Rubble. The demolition exercise at the University of Port Harcourt has changed parts of the campus landscape, leaving behind cleared spaces and questions that extend beyond the structures that once stood there. Over time, stands, kiosks, shops and other commercial structures became part of the university environment, providing services and livelihoods. While the business owners and those affected count their losses, the removal of these structures raise questions about how they emerged, whether the necessary approvals were obtained, and how regulations were enforced. While the university maintains that the exercise targeted illegal structures, concerns remain about the notice given to occupants, the investments affected and the circumstances surrounding the establishment of these businesses. If rent or other payments were collected from occupants, the circumstances surrounding those transactions also deserve clarification. Beyond the demolitions, attention now turns to the future of the cleared spaces. Will they be landscaped, left open or developed for other purposes? Can the university preserve its green spaces while providing designated areas for legitimate commercial activities? This is also an opportune time for the university management to look into the dilapidated walkways across the campus. As the landscape undergoes changes, repairing deteriorated walkways would improve accessibility, safety and the overall campus environment. The demolitions may have removed structures, but the opportunity now lies in thoughtful planning, improved infrastructure and a campus environment that serves the entire university community. The question is no longer just what has been removed, but what will be improved and built in its place. EDITORIAL | Uniport Under Reset: Beyond the demolitions. The once green and serene landscape of the University of Port Harcourt has changed. Stands, kiosks, shops and other commercial structures have increasingly become part of the environment. Many provide services students genuinely need and create livelihoods for members of the university community. Yet, a question remains: When does commercial activity begin to alter the character and purpose of a university space? On October 2, 2026 the University of Port Harcourt announced that the demolition of what it describes as illegal structures on University premises will commence on today Monday October 5, 2026. The University says the exercise follows a decision of the Finance and General Purpose Committee of the Governing Council and is intended to restore order, ensure compliance with University regulations and maintain a safe and conducive environment. The decision brings attention to a larger issue: how did we get here? Structures do not usually transform a campus overnight. They appear gradually. A temporary stand becomes permanent. One structure becomes several. Commercial activity expands, and eventually, what was once temporary becomes part of the landscape. That raises questions about planning, approvals, monitoring and enforcement. If structures require approval, how were they established? Were approvals granted? If not, when was the violation identified? And what system will prevent a similar situation from developing again? These questions are not necessarily an indictment of any particular administration. They are questions worth asking if the University wants a sustainable approach to campus development. There is also the human side. Behind every structure may be someone's investment, business or livelihood. That does not automatically make an unauthorised structure lawful, but it means enforcement has consequences beyond the buildings themselves. Clear communication will therefore matter. People should understand what qualifies as an illegal structure, which structures are affected and what procedures apply. But perhaps the biggest question is not what happens during the demolition, it is what happens afterwards. If these structures are removed, what happens to the spaces? Will they remain open? Will properly designated commercial areas be created? Will there be a framework for businesses that genuinely serve the university community? Demolition can remove structures, only planning can prevent the cycle from returning. University of Port Harcourt can evolve without losing its identity. The University can accommodate legitimate commercial activity without allowing commerce to overwhelm the character and purpose of the campus. This moment, therefore, presents an opportunity—not only to remove structures, but to rethink how University of Port Harcourt manages its spaces. The question is simple: What should the University of Port Harcourt look like five years from now? The answer should not be determined only by what we remove today, but by what we decide to build tomorrow. Uniport Governing Council Task Force Meets Vice Chancellor on Revenue, Assets and Investments. The Governing Council Task Force on Revenue Review, Illegal Structures, Business Concerns and University Investment Reorganisation has met with the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Chike Princewill, to review progress on its mandate and clarify key areas of its assignment. The meeting focused on strengthening the University’s revenue systems, particularly the Single Portal administration policy, digitalising bed-space allocation and payment, and improving information management, transparency and accountability. The Committee also discussed the enumeration and marking of illegal structures on University property, as well as the reorganisation of the University’s business concerns and investments to improve efficiency, sustainability and returns. Responding, Prof. Princewill commended the Committee for its work and stressed the need for accurate data, proper documentation and practical solutions that protect the University’s interests. He further directed that the exercise on illegal structures be systematic and properly documented, while urging the Committee to remain focused on its mandate and ensure that its recommendations are sustainable and beneficial to the University. The Task Force, chaired by Chief Hon. Kadilo Kabari, was established by the Senator Mao Ohuabunwa-led Governing Council to review the University’s revenue systems, address issues concerning illegal structures and business concerns, and reorganise Uniport Investments Limited for greater efficiency and sustainability. The assignment falls within the Council’s statutory responsibilities under Section 6(1) of the University of Port Harcourt Act, particularly regarding the University’s finances, property and policies. During the courtesy visit on Thursday, 6th August 2026, Chief Kabari said the engagement forms part of the Taskforce's mandate to enhance the University's business environment through improved revenue generation, investment opportunities, business regulation, and the reorganisation of commercial activities.
