• EDITORIAL: A Week That Defined Leadership Beyond Office.

Some weeks are remembered for ceremonies. Others are remembered for decisions that change lives.

The week-long close-out activities of the 9th Substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, will be remembered for both.

Over seven days, the University community witnessed a remarkable celebration of leadership through a rally, command performance, public lecture and book launch, legacy tour, football tournament, evening of music, and thanksgiving service. While these events honoured the end of one administration, they also produced commitments that will shape the future of students for years to come.

One of the defining moments came during the Public Lecture and Book Launch when Dr. Richard Nyong announced his commitment to build a 200-room hostel for the University. Student accommodation remains one of the critical needs of every growing institution, and such a pledge reflects an understanding that improving the learning environment is one of the greatest investments anyone can make in education.

Then came the Evening of Music, where appreciation for talent turned into an extraordinary act of generosity.

After receiving commendable reports on the performances of the students from the Department of Music, Sir Chief Hon. Justice Biobele Abraham Georgewill, the twin brother of Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, pledged scholarships for five students each in 200 Level, 300 Level, and 400 Level—a total of 15 scholarships.

    His gesture immediately inspired another.

The 7th Substantive Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph A. Ajienka, sustained the momentum by matching the commitment with scholarships for another 15 students.

Not long after, Professor Boniface A. Oriji, Director of the Emerald Energy Institute and Chairman of the Harmonized Committee on the Close-Out Activities, also pledged scholarships for five additional students.

In one evening, 35 students were given something priceless: the opportunity to pursue their education without the weight of financial burden. It is a reminder that the greatest investment any institution can make is in its people.

The week also highlighted the strength of student leadership.

On Friday, July 10, 2026, the Finance Society, University of Port Harcourt, under the leadership of Ms. Victory Kwokwo, successfully hosted Career Fair 2.0. The event brought together distinguished professionals from academia, government, finance, and industry, creating a platform where students could gain practical insights, build meaningful connections, and prepare for life beyond graduation. It was another example of how student-led initiatives continue to enrich the University's academic ecosystem.

Today, the University turns another historic page. As Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill formally hands over the reins of leadership to Prof. Chike Princewill Chike, the 10th Substantive Vice Chancellor, the institution begins a new chapter. Leadership transitions are not simply about a change in office—they are about preserving enduring values while embracing fresh ideas and new possibilities.

Looking back, the significance of the past week lies not merely in the number of events held, but in the impact they created.

A public lecture inspired the promise of a 200-room hostel. An evening of music produced 35 scholarships. A student society connected young people with accomplished professionals through Career Fair 2.0. And today, a peaceful handover ushers in a new era of leadership.

These are the moments that define great institutions.

Buildings will stand. Scholarships will transform lives. Careers will begin because of opportunities created. Leadership will change hands, but the University's commitment to excellence must remain constant.

That is the true legacy of leadership—not merely occupying an office, but leaving behind opportunities that will outlive your tenure.

  • EDITORIAL: More Than a Ceremony — A Convocation Week That Reintroduced the University of Port Harcourt to the World.

The 36th Combined Convocation of the University of Port Harcourt was more than an academic ceremony. It was a defining moment in the University's history—a week where excellence met legacy, innovation met tradition, and one era gracefully prepared to hand over to another.

For seven memorable days, Uniport became a gathering point for scholars, alumni, policymakers, industry leaders, students, parents, and friends who came together to celebrate not just the conferment of degrees but the enduring impact of an institution that has continued to shape leaders across Nigeria and beyond.

From the opening Jumat Service and Convocation Service to the final conferment of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, every event reflected a University committed to scholarship, innovation, leadership, and service.

The week also carried a deeper significance. It marked the last Convocation to be presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill, whose tenure comes to an end in July, 2026. Throughout his administration, the University of Port Harcourt has continued to strengthen its reputation for academic excellence, research, infrastructure development, and institutional stability. The 36th Combined Convocation stood as a fitting culmination of a leadership defined by vision, progress, and an unwavering commitment to the University's growth.

The Vice Chancellor's Media Briefing set the tone for the celebrations, highlighting the University's achievements and aspirations while reaffirming its place as one of Nigeria's leading institutions of higher learning.

One of the most symbolic moments of the week was the Tree Planting Ceremony by the Best Graduating Students, Loveth Onyeguabor and Oyibo Daniel. Their act was more than ceremonial—it represented the lasting legacy that academic excellence leaves behind. As they planted trees within the University community, they also planted hope and inspiration for generations of students who will walk the same paths in pursuit of greatness.

The Red Carpet and Command Performance celebrated the University's rich cultural heritage and vibrant student life, while the Vice Chancellor's Dinner honoured 120 First Class Graduands, recognizing exceptional academic achievement and reminding the community that excellence is built through discipline, consistency, and resilience.

Thursday emerged as one of the defining days of Convocation Week.

The Research Fair and Exhibition transformed the University Library into a showcase of discovery and innovation, highlighting decades of academic excellence and groundbreaking research capable of addressing national and global challenges.

The Fireside Chat featuring Mr. Iyinoluwa Aboyeji OON —Co-Founder of Andela, Co-Founder of Flutterwave, and Founder of Future Africa—provided students and young graduates with practical insights on purpose, entrepreneurship, innovation, and life after school. His message encouraged a generation to move beyond seeking opportunities to creating them.

    Then history was made.

In a landmark announcement, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Distinguished Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, officially announced the appointment of Professor Princewill Chike as the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt.

The timing could not have been more symbolic. As thousands of graduates prepared to leave the University's gates to make their mark on the world, the institution itself embraced new leadership to guide its next chapter. It was a powerful reminder that while students graduate, great institutions continually renew themselves, preserving their values while embracing new possibilities.

-> [Check our Facebook page for full Editorial.] <- #UniqueStoary #Uniport #Stoary #Editorial #UniportConvocation2026

  • Uniport Alumni Spotlight: Dame Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff, Queen of Twon Brass kingdom and Chairperson/Proprietress, Titare Star Royal Academy.

Dame Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff stands tall as one of the University of Port Harcourt’s most distinguished alumni — a woman whose life journey reflects the values of excellence, courage and service that Uniport continues to nurture.

An alumna of the Department of Theatre Arts, Dame Dr. Diete-Spiff graduated in 1992, leaving an indelible mark on campus life as the President of the Students’ Union. Her tenure was defined by bold leadership and uncommon resolve, most notably her role in spearheading initiatives that helped curb cultism and restore peace on campus — a feat that remains memorable in the university’s history.

Beyond Uniport, her academic and professional pursuits demonstrate a relentless commitment to growth. She holds a Law degree from Rivers State University of Science and Technology and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2007. Her global academic footprint includes an MBA from the University of Liverpool (UK), a Doctor of Business Administration from Walden University (USA), an Honorary PhD from Ashland University, Ohio, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Education from Walden University.

Today, she is widely known as the Queen of Twon Brass Kingdom in Bayelsa State, seamlessly blending traditional leadership with modern governance, advocacy and entrepreneurship. An evangelist, educationist and corporate leader, Dame Dr. Diete-Spiff has held key leadership positions across diverse sectors, including manufacturing, education, legal services and corporate governance. She has served as Independent Director at University Press PLC and is the Chairperson/Proprietress of Titare Star Royal Academy, among other notable roles.

Driven by a passion for impact, she founded the HRM Dr. Josephine Alfred Diete-Spiff Foundation, a platform dedicated to youth and women empowerment, skills development and community upliftment. Her work continues to empower lives, particularly among vulnerable groups, reinforcing her belief that true leadership is measured by service.

Reflecting on her time at Uniport, Dame Dr. Diete-Spiff has often described the institution as unique, crediting it for shaping her into a well-rounded individual capable of excelling across disciplines and cultures. From the stage to the courtroom, the boardroom to the throne, her journey affirms Uniport’s reputation as a breeding ground for transformational leaders.

Dame Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff remains a shining example of what it means to be “Uniport Made” — bold in vision, grounded in values, and committed to national development.

▪️ If you know any Uniport Alumni doing exploits, do well to mention them in the comment section and we might just shine the spotlight on them.

  • 🎙️ Introducing BOLD Conversations.

University is more than lectures, grades, and deadlines — it’s where real life begins. But the most important lessons are rarely taught in class.

BOLD Conversations is a Unique Stoary initiative created for thinkers, builders, leaders, and questioners — students and non-students alike — who want more than surface-level talk.

This is a space for real conversations about business, politics, relationships, culture, faith, money, power, identity, and purpose.
    Not noise. Not trends.
    But depth, clarity, and truth.

    No filters.
    No sugarcoating.
Just honest, thoughtful — and sometimes uncomfortable — conversations that challenge how you think, live, and decide.

    If you’ve ever questioned:

    * the system you’re being educated in
    * the pressure to “figure life out” too early
    * money, love, faith, purpose, or power
    * what society expects versus what actually works

Then this space is for you.

Expect lively debates, bold perspectives, uncomfortable truths, and practical wisdom you can apply whether you’re 19, 25, or 35.

    🗓 Every Wednesday | 7PM

  • The Lost Son Who Never Left.
When we hear the Parable of the Prodigal Son, our minds almost always sprint toward the younger brother, the rebel, the runaway, the one who traded home for hunger and dignity for desperation.

    He’s dramatic.
    He’s messy.
    He’s relatable.
    But standing in the shadows
of that celebration was another lost son.

The elder brother never left home,
yet his heart wandered miles away.

    And if we’re honest,
    painfully honest,
we sometimes look a lot like him.

The elder brother did everything “right.”
He stayed. He worked. He obeyed.

    But when grace burst
    through the front door
    wearing the younger brother’s
    tattered clothes,
the elder brother froze in the doorway,
    unable to celebrate
    what he believed
    someone else didn’t deserve.

He wasn’t lost in a distant land.
He was lost in his bitterness.
    Lost in comparison.
    Lost in entitlement.
    Lost in the quiet belief
    that his faithfulness
    earned him more love
    than his brother’s repentance did.

    And Jesus tells this story
    because this type of lostness
    is just as real,
    just as dangerous,
as the kind that rebels and runs.

We become the elder brother when
    Someone else gets a blessing
    we’ve been praying for.

    When God pours grace
    on a person we think
    should’ve “known better.”

    We serve faithfully,
    quietly and feel unseen.

    We clutch our sense
    of fairness more tightly
    than God’s heart of mercy.

    We start believing
    God owes us something.

    Sometimes our feet
    never leave the Father’s house,
but our hearts wander far from His.

But here’s the part we often overlook,
    The father didn’t just
run down the road for the prodigal.
He walked out into the night
    for the elder brother.

    He pleaded with him.
    Invited him in.
    Assured him of his place.
    Reminded him,
    “You are always with me,
and everything I have is yours.”

    The father pursued
    both sons with the same
    relentless love.

    One comes home from rebellion.
The other needs to come home
    from resentment.

And many days, that second son?
    That’s us.

    The gospel is wide enough
to welcome the broken and the bitter.
It restores the rebellious and the resentful.
It calls home the ones who run
and the ones who stand outside refusing to celebrate.

    Grace doesn’t just
    rescue the prodigal.
    It softens the elder brother.
It takes our clenched fists and opens them.
It pulls us out of comparison
    and back into communion.
It reminds us that every blessing
we have is a gift, not a wage.

God is asking us to be
    present ones.
    Ones who step inside
    the celebration because
His joy is better than our pride.

    If you’ve been the prodigal,
    there’s mercy.

If you’ve been the elder brother,
    there’s healing.

    If you’ve been both,
    then welcome to the family.
    Most of us have.

The Father is still standing at the door,
    light spilling behind Him, saying
    “My child, come in.
    Everything I have is yours."

    Sharing to encourage everyone.✨
