  • BOLD Conversations | Episode 21

Topic: Is NYSC Still Necessary in Today’s Nigeria?

Every year, thousands of fresh graduates pack their bags, put on the iconic white shorts, and head to orientation camps across the country. The National Youth Service Corps was built on a beautiful vision: fostering national unity, encouraging cross-cultural integration, and driving rural development. For decades, it has been a rite of passage, a mandatory bridge between school and the "real world."

But if you look closely at today's landscape, the reality on the ground feels very different from the original blueprint.

We see a distinct divide forming. One side argues that in an economy driven by technology, digital skills, and rapid career placement, a mandatory one-year pause is an outdated system that drains productive time and exposes youth to unnecessary security risks. The other side suggests that NYSC remains the only thread keeping national unity alive, providing essential labor in public schools and clinics, and giving young Nigerians a rare, eye-opening glimpse outside their comfort zones.

Is NYSC still a vital tool for nation-building, or has it become a glorified, risky routine that our generation has outgrown?

Tonight, we are looking honestly at our current reality. We’re asking:
Is it time to scrap the scheme, completely restructure it for the modern age, or keep it exactly as it is?

  • Uniport SUG Senate President, Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma Breaks Silence Amid Explosive Allegations.

The Office of the Senate President of the Students’ Union Government, University of Port Harcourt, under the leadership of Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma D., has officially debunked the circulating allegations claiming that the Senate President sponsored or invited armed individuals into the university environment during the recent political tensions within the Union.

According to the memorandum released on May 22, 2026, the allegations were described as false, misleading, malicious and politically motivated attempts aimed at tarnishing the image and integrity of the Legislative Arm of the Union.

    The statement emphasized that:

    * Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma D. has no connection whatsoever with any armed group or activity.
    * The Office remains committed to peace, dialogue, constitutional order and the protection of students’ interests.
    * Students and stakeholders are urged to disregard unverified narratives capable of causing panic, unrest or division within the University community.
    * The Executive President of the SUG was also called upon to publicly clarify the situation in the interest of truth, peace and responsible leadership.

The statement further stressed that the Students’ Union Government must continue to stand as a symbol of unity, maturity and accountability — not a platform for propaganda, misinformation or character assassination.

According to the official resolutions released after the sitting, the Senate announced the removal of the Director of Socials, Comrade Tamunokuro Anga Lawrence, following findings presented by an investigative panel set up by the Senate.

The committee reportedly found alleged evidence of administrative and financial lapses and further accused the suspended Director of continuing to parade himself publicly as Director of Socials despite an existing Senate suspension and resolution. The report also alleged that he proceeded to organize unapproved activities and events while still under suspension. In addition, the Senate stated that Comr. Tamunokuro Lawrence failed to honour Senate summons, with the committee reportedly describing his notice of absence as “short, watery and frivolous.”

Following deliberations, Senator Omanoye Victory moved a motion for his permanent removal, which was seconded by Senator James Erhuwuwu. The motion was subsequently adopted through a majority voice vote. The Senate thereafter called on the Chief Justice to affirm and swear in the in-house Chairman on Socials, Senator Otto Joshua, as the new Director of Socials.

The plenary also shifted attention to concerns surrounding financial stewardship within the SUG leadership.

According to the Senate, notices had earlier been sent to the Presidency, the Treasurer, the Financial Secretary and the Director of Transport.

    The Senate disclosed that:
    • The President sent a notice of absence alongside a request for one-week grace to appear before the Senate.
    • The Treasurer and Financial Secretary appeared before the Senate and were interrogated during the sitting.
    • The Director of Transport reportedly failed to honour the Senate’s invitation.

Following deliberations and interrogation of available officials, the Senate stated that allegations bordering on presidential financial irregularities and breaches of constitutional provisions emerged.

Consequently, the Senate leadership announced the constitution of a five-man investigative committee to probe the Executive President Senator Amaechi Tamunotonye Walson and report its findings and recommendations back to the Senate.

Speaking during the plenary, Senate President Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma reportedly charged Senators to remain firm in defending constitutional order and insisted that the Senate under his leadership would not be influenced externally.

The Senate also explained that the plenary was moved online due to security concerns, low turnout and the presence of unidentified persons around the physical venue.

The unfolding developments have since sparked widespread reactions across the Uniport student community, with many students closely monitoring what could become one of the most consequential political moments within the current SUG administration.

  • EDITORIAL: Understanding the Organizational Structure and Hierarchy of a Federal University.

The comment section was buzzing last week. We posted a birthday shout-out to our Unique Chancellor, HRH Major-General (Dr.) Muhammadu Ilyasu Bashar (Rtd), and the reactions were eye-opening. Amidst the celebratory comments, a recurring question popped up: "Wait, we have a Chancellor? I thought the VC was the boss?"

For many students, the university begins and ends with their Departmental HOD or the Vice Chancellor. However, the University of Port Harcourt, same as other Federal Universities, operates under a sophisticated structure. Understanding this hierarchy isn't just for political science majors; it’s essential for every student who wants to understand how their degree is governed.

-> Level 1: The External Authority (The Visitor)
At the absolute peak of the pyramid is the Visitor.
In all Federal Universities, the Visitor is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The Visitor holds the ultimate authority, appointing the Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor, and key members of the Governing Council.

-> Level 2: The Titular & Policy Leaders
These officers represent the prestige and the legislative "backbone" of the institution.
    • The Chancellor: The titular head of the University. Currently HRH Major-General (Dr.) Muhammadu Ilyasu Bashar (Rtd), the Emir of Gwandu. He takes precedence over everyone else and presides over Convocation ceremonies for the award of degrees.
    • The Pro-Chancellor: The Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa. He oversees the "Board of Directors" for the school. The Council manages finances, university property, and major administrative appointments.

-> Level 3: The Executive Management (The VC & Team)
This is the "Engine Room" where daily campus life is managed.
    • The Vice Chancellor: The Chief Executive and Chief Academic Officer, Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill. He is the "Manager" of the University, directing affairs toward our vision and mission. He chairs the Senate—the body that approves your results and academic curriculum. The VC is assisted by three specialized deputies who oversee the core pillars of the university:
°° DVC (Academics): Professor Rosemary Ogu– Oversees all matters related to teaching, curriculum, and student academic progress.
°° DVC (Administration): Professor Chukwudi Onyeasor – Manages the personnel, staff welfare, and general administrative logistics of the campus.
°° DVC (Research & Development): Professor Angela Frank-Briggs – Focuses on the university’s research output, grants, and academic innovation.

-> Level 4: The Principal Officers (The Administrators)
While the VC leads, these officers ensure the specialized departments function legally and financially.
    • The Registrar: Mrs. Gloria Chindah PhD. The Chief Administrative Officer and "Chief Scribe" to the Council and Senate.
    • The Bursar: Dr. Godpower Obah. The Chief Financial Officer responsible for the control of all university funds.
    • The University Librarian: Professor Helen Emasealu. The custodian of knowledge, coordinating all library services across the campus.

The university is more than just a collection of lecture halls; it is a structured mini-state. When we celebrate the birthday of a Chancellor or a VC, we aren't just celebrating a person—we are acknowledging the stability of the system that validates your hard work.

From the Visitor to the Principal Officers, every tier of this hierarchy exists to ensure that the Unique brand remains a beacon of excellence. Knowing who is who is the first step in truly belonging to the community.

    Stay Unique.

The Governing Council of University of Port Harcourt has commissioned the institution’s revitalised bottling plant, marking a significant stride in its drive for sustainability and institutional growth. The commissioning ceremony, held over the weekend, was led by the Chairman of Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa.

The upgraded facility, now equipped with modern, state-of-the-art machinery, boasts an impressive production capacity of up to 8,000 bags per day. This development is expected to significantly boost the University’s internally generated revenue while enhancing overall operational efficiency.

As part of its oversight functions, the Council also undertook an inspection of key infrastructure projects across the University. Among these was the Federal Government-backed solar farm project, designed to ensure uninterrupted power supply within the campus. Additionally, the Council reviewed progress on an ongoing hostel accommodation project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement aimed at addressing the growing housing needs of students.

In a move that underscores its commitment to academic excellence and staff development, the Council approved the promotion of several academic staff to the ranks of Professor and Associate Professor. Furthermore, seven staff members were elevated to the rank of Directors, alongside the promotion of Deputy Registrars, as well as personnel within the Bursary, Audit, and other administrative cadres.

Reaffirming the Council’s vision for the institution, Senator Ohuabunwa emphasized its commitment to positioning the University on the global stage. He noted that sustained investment in infrastructure, academic advancement, and innovation will not only strengthen the University’s standing but also establish it as a benchmark for excellence in higher education.

  • ASUU Rejects Proposed UK University Campus in Nigeria.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has rejected agreements between the Federal Government and the United Kingdom on education, including plans to establish a campus of Coventry University in Nigeria.

ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, stated the union’s position at a public lecture organised by the ASUU branch of Sa’adu Zungur University, warning that the move could undermine Nigeria’s higher education system.

He criticised the proposed campus, describing it as exploitative and inconsistent with the treatment of Nigerian students seeking education in the UK.

“They have denied Nigerians visas to study in the UK, yet they are coming here to establish universities and take our money, this is another form of colonialism, and ASUU will strongly oppose it,” Prof. Piwuna said.

The ASUU president also argued that some foreign universities were expanding into countries like Nigeria due to financial pressures and declining international student enrolment, insisting that local institutions should instead be strengthened.

He further stressed the need to preserve the committee system in Nigerian universities, warning against excessive concentration of powers in the offices of Vice Chancellors.

As the ultimatum issued by ASUU to the Federal Government on salary implementation for Professors expires, we await their next line of action.

  • Business Stoary Private Pre-Launch Recap
Headline: The Mastermind That Changed Everything.

Last night, a select group of University of Port Harcourt student entrepreneurs gathered behind "closed doors" to rewrite the future of their brands. The Business Stoary Private Pre-Launch was more than just a meeting; it was a shift in the atmosphere of campus entrepreneurship.

We had the distinct honor and privilege of hosting the one and only The Janel Rowland as our lead resource person. For someone with a vision as large and a schedule as demanding as hers, having her dedicate her time to teach our student founders was nothing short of a gift.
Janel didn't just "speak"—she dismantled old mindsets and rebuilt them with professional strategy, storytelling, and soul. To have someone of her caliber guide our very first cohort is a milestone we don't take lightly.

To Janel Rowland: Thank you for choosing to invest in the next generation of Uniport founders. Your insights are the fuel that will power these businesses to the global stage. We are beyond grateful to have had you lead this charge.
