In recent days, the University of Port Harcourt community has witnessed renewed conversations surrounding the ₦50,000,000 donation made by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to support Best Graduating Female Students during the 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony. This discussion gained momentum following our earlier publication titled: “A Call For Transparency In The Disbursement Of The ₦50 Million First Lady’s Award To Uniport Best Graduating Female Students.” Our concerns focused on three key issues: 1. Uneven communication to beneficiaries. 2. The disbursement of only ₦100,000 per student, which mathematically represents only 10% of the total donation even if 50 beneficiaries existed. 3. The absence of an official explanation regarding how the ₦50 million would be administered. Shortly afterwards, a Best Graduating Female Student from the Department of Geology, Ujah Amarachi, shared her personal experience on LinkedIn. Her post read: “Uniport has finally given me my cash prize for being a Best Graduating Female Student and I'm so happy.💃💃 … I finally received the money💃💃💃 I was paid 100K guys.” She appreciated the First Lady and added: “But wait oh!! I just want to ask a question. 1. Do I keep receiving 100k for 10 year. 2. Or this is a one time payment👀 You won't blame me for asking. The money given was 50Million naira. Not five but fifty😳 … Let’s be clear: I am grateful. But we all know that if ₦50 million is shared only among Best Graduating Female Students from two convocation sets … the math will not end at ₦100k per person.” Following this, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, responded in the comment section to clarify the structure of the award: “Every award instituted for best graduating students is done for 10 years and it’s for best graduating students each session till 10 years. No student takes for two sessions. In recognition of this historic academic feat, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, graciously donated ₦50,000,000 for the benefit of all female Best Graduating Students (BGS) of the 35th Convocation. However, several developments surrounding the administration of this donation have raised concerns that require clear communication and transparency from the appropriate authorities! 1. Uneven Disbursement to Beneficiaries. Reports indicate that while some beneficiaries received payments last week, others have not yet received any communication or credit alert. From the lecture halls of the University of Port Harcourt to the commanding heights of banking, economic policy, and public leadership — Dr. Alex Chioma Otti has built a career that proves excellence is not an act, but a lifelong commitment. Studying Economics at the University of Port Harcourt, Dr Otti distinguished himself early, graduating with a First Class Honours degree in 1988. His years at Uniport were marked by an uncommon blend of academic brilliance and leadership: he served first as Treasurer, then President of the Nigerian Economics Students Association (NESA), and even took on the role of News Editor of the Uniport Mirror campus publication. His devotion to academics earned him recognition as the Best Graduating Student in the Department of Economics, the best in the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Overall Best Graduating Student of his year. Yet, instead of walking the predictable path of academia, Otti envisioned a future shaped by financial intelligence, reforms, and nation-building. This vision propelled him into Nigeria’s banking sector, where he rose steadily through institutions such as Nigerian International Bank (Citibank), UBA, and subsequently became the Group Managing Director/CEO of Diamond Bank Plc. OAU STUDENTS’ UNION REPORTS DEATH OF DENTISTRY STUDENT AS SEARCH FOR MISSING STUDENT CONTINUES The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (Great Ife) has announced the unfortunate death of a Dentistry student, even as efforts persist to locate another missing student, Dorcas Oseghale. In a statement issued on August 13, 2025, the Union described the development as a painful and devastating event that has left the entire campus community in deep sorrow. The Union noted that the tragic news arrived while it was still working closely with relevant authorities to find Oseghale, who has reportedly been missing for about five days. OAU Students’ Union confirms loss of dentistry student, continues search for missing colleague “Our sincere sympathies are with the family, friends, and classmates of the deceased. We particularly identify with the Dental Students’ Association as they mourn this great loss within their faculty,” the statement read. The Union also reflected on the growing strain of academic pressure among students, reminding them that help is always available and that no one should feel isolated. It emphasized the importance of mental well-being and noted that the university’s health centre offers private and accessible counselling for students in distress. In addition, the Union pledged to keep pushing for stronger mental health systems on campus and to help eliminate the stigma that often surrounds such discussions. It appealed to the university administration, the health centre, staff, and the Division of Student Affairs to join hands in preventing similar tragedies in the future.
