  • EDITORIAL: University of Port Harcourt Return to National Relevance.

The latest 2026 JAMB UTME application statistics have revealed something remarkable — the University of Port Harcourt is back in the national conversation.

After spending five consecutive years outside Nigeria’s Top 10 most preferred universities, Uniport has now emerged as the 10th most applied-to university in the country, recording 48,199 first-choice applications and securing 2.15% of the total national application share.

Leading the chart are Lagos State University, University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, University of Benin, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, University of Ilorin, University of Nigeria, and Federal University Oye-Ekiti.

This development may appear like just another statistic, but it represents something much deeper; a renewed confidence in the institution by students, parents, and stakeholders across Nigeria.

The rise suggests that Uniport’s academic environment, visibility, student culture, and institutional reputation are once again attracting national attention. It also signals that the university is gradually reclaiming its place among Nigeria’s most competitive and desirable institutions.

What makes this achievement even more significant is the consistency of older institutions that have dominated the rankings for years. Breaking into that space is not accidental; it is earned through relevance, perception, and sustained institutional appeal.

This achievement speaks volumes about the growing confidence in the university’s leadership, academic direction, and institutional visibility under the administration of Owunari Georgewill.

At a time when competition for relevance among Nigerian universities is stronger than ever, Uniport’s resurgence is a powerful statement that the institution is moving forward with purpose and renewed energy.

Interestingly, this recognition comes around the birthday season of the Vice Chancellor, making it a truly symbolic and beautiful gift — not wrapped in paper, but written boldly in national statistics.

Indeed, the numbers are speaking, and they are speaking well of Uniport.

Uniport is not just growing in numbers — it is growing in influence.

  • Episode 1: The Arrival

In the bustling city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, the gates of the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) swung open for a new academic year.
Fresh-faced students from across the country poured in, their hearts pounding with excitement and nerves.
Among them was Ada, a bright-eyed girl from Lagos, dreaming of becoming a petroleum engineer. She lugged her suitcase through the crowded Choba campus, dodging motorcycles and street vendors selling akara and plantains.
Her roommate, Chidi, a local from Rivers State, greeted her with a warm smile. "Welcome to Uniport, the 'Unique Uniport' as we call it," he said.
They unpacked in their tiny hostel room in Abuja Park, sharing stories of JAMB exams and family expectations.

Ada stared at the Niger Delta scenery from her window, the oil rigs in the distance reminding her of her goals. That evening, they attended the orientation lecture in the massive Convocation Arena, where the Vice-Chancellor inspired them: "Success here demands discipline, resilience, and passion."

Ada felt a surge of determination. As night fell, the sounds of generators and distant highlife music lulled her to sleep, marking the start of her university journey.

Episode 1: The Arrival In the bustling city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, the gates of the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) swung open for a new academic year. That evening, they attended the orientation lecture in the massive Convocation Arena, where the Vice-Chancellor inspired them: "Success here demands discipline, resilience, and passion." Ada felt a surge of determination. As night fell, the sounds of generators and distant highlife music lulled her to sleep, marking the start of her university journey. Leave a reaction pls TBC #migg

  • UNIPORT Lecturer Exposes Deception Behind ‘Sign-Out’ Jamborees

A lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Dr. Ovunda Ihunwo, has raised alarm over what he describes as the “deceptive culture” of sign-out jamborees, warning parents to be more vigilant about their children’s true academic standing before celebrating.

In recent years, it has become common to see graduating students marking the end of examinations with “sign-out” ceremonies, often characterized by elaborate parties, designer outfits, loud music, spraying of money, and in some cases, the active participation of parents. However, Dr. Ihunwo noted that a growing number of these celebrations are misleading, as some students who participate may not have actually met their graduation requirements.

“Parents must be careful. Some of the students you see signing out are not even cleared academically,” Ihunwo cautioned. “They are deceiving themselves, their parents, and the public.”

The lecturer stressed that many students engage in sign-out events as a show of status and social pressure, even while still battling carryovers, outstanding fees, or other issues that could delay their graduation. According to him, such displays create false impressions and put parents in an awkward position when the truth eventually surfaces.

Observers say the culture of sign-out jamborees, once a simple farewell gesture among classmates, has ballooned into a social trend fueled by peer influence, social media clout, and the desire for public validation. For many families, it has become a symbol of pride, with parents sometimes funding the extravagant outings without verifying if their children are genuinely through with school.

Dr. Ihunwo urged parents to demand academic confirmation before supporting such ceremonies, while also encouraging students to focus on completing their studies with integrity rather than chasing fleeting moments of celebration.

“Graduation is a milestone that should be backed by proof of academic achievement, not just customized shirts and noise,” he emphasized.

His remarks have sparked conversations on campus and online, with some students agreeing that the sign-out craze has become excessive, while others argue that it remains an important rite of passage regardless of academic hurdles.
