SUG PRESIDENT GUN DOWN
The shocking killing of Samuel Sampson Udo, a 26-year-old former student leader at the Peace Institute of Management and Technology in Akwa Ibom State, has plunged his community into deep grief. Udo was shot dead during his father’s funeral rites in Cross River State, turning a moment meant for mourning into a scene of terror.
The event, which had been peaceful, erupted into chaos when rival cult groups clashed, unleashing gunfire without warning. A resident, Utum Ofem Ubi, recalled how Udo was hit by bullets as he tried to escape. In seconds, the gathering shifted from calm conversation and music to panic, screams, and people running for safety, locking themselves indoors.
Witnesses say the incident occurred at about 2 a.m. on October 31, 2025, during what appeared to be a violent “show of strength” between the cult groups. The attack not only claimed Udo’s life but also left several others critically injured, including 29-year-old Miss Choice Ikenger, who reportedly still has bullets lodged in her body.
For Udo’s family, the trauma remains unbearable. His mother and siblings say the image of his body riddled with bullets haunts them. His sister, Miss Affiong Sampson, described the killing as a savage act.
> “They shot him as if he was an animal,” she said. “His body is still in the mortuary. Our entire family has been in pain since that day.”

In a statement issued on August 13, 2025, the Union described the development as a painful and devastating event that has left the entire campus community in deep sorrow. “Our sincere sympathies are with the family, friends, and classmates of the deceased. We particularly identify with the Dental Students’ Association as they mourn this great loss within their faculty,” the statement read.
The Union also reflected on the growing strain of academic pressure among students, reminding them that help is always available and that no one should feel isolated. It emphasized the importance of mental well-being and noted that the university’s health centre offers private and accessible counselling for students in distress.
In addition, the Union pledged to keep pushing for stronger mental health systems on campus and to help eliminate the stigma that often surrounds such discussions. It appealed to the university administration, the health centre, staff, and the Division of Student Affairs to join hands in preventing similar tragedies in the future.
The release was signed by Public Relations Officer, Olowosile Joseph Oreoluwa; Secretary-General, Habeeb Oke Isa; and President, Adelani David Oluwatodimu.
