The Governing Council of University of Port Harcourt has commissioned the institution’s revitalised bottling plant, marking a significant stride in its drive for sustainability and institutional growth. The commissioning ceremony, held over the weekend, was led by the Chairman of Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa.

The upgraded facility, now equipped with modern, state-of-the-art machinery, boasts an impressive production capacity of up to 8,000 bags per day. This development is expected to significantly boost the University’s internally generated revenue while enhancing overall operational efficiency.

As part of its oversight functions, the Council also undertook an inspection of key infrastructure projects across the University. Among these was the Federal Government-backed solar farm project, designed to ensure uninterrupted power supply within the campus. Additionally, the Council reviewed progress on an ongoing hostel accommodation project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement aimed at addressing the growing housing needs of students.

In a move that underscores its commitment to academic excellence and staff development, the Council approved the promotion of several academic staff to the ranks of Professor and Associate Professor. Furthermore, seven staff members were elevated to the rank of Directors, alongside the promotion of Deputy Registrars, as well as personnel within the Bursary, Audit, and other administrative cadres.

Reaffirming the Council’s vision for the institution, Senator Ohuabunwa emphasized its commitment to positioning the University on the global stage. He noted that sustained investment in infrastructure, academic advancement, and innovation will not only strengthen the University’s standing but also establish it as a benchmark for excellence in higher education.

This is why the remarkable service of Owunari Georgewill, Vice Chancellor of University of Port Harcourt, as the Chief External Examiner for Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Rivers State deserves both recognition and celebration.

Serving in such a demanding role requires more than oversight—it calls for vigilance, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Prof. Georgewill has exemplified all these qualities and more. From traveling across multiple examination centres to engaging directly with coordinators, his hands-on involvement reflects a rare kind of leadership—one that prioritizes presence over convenience.

At a time when the integrity of educational systems is more important than ever, his dedication serves as a powerful reminder that standards are upheld not just by policies, but by people who are willing to do the work.

  • 🎙️ BOLD Conversations – Episode 13

Topic: SCHOOL STRESS: Preparation for Life or Just Pressure?

We’re told that the 2 AM study sessions, the crushing deadlines, and the weight of "carrying" a CGPA are the fire that refines us. We are told this is the "training ground"—that if you can’t survive the pressure of a lecture hall, you’ll never survive the heat of the real world.

But at what point does "building character" turn into breaking spirits? While we are busy learning how to memorize and reproduce, are we actually learning how to live?

Is school stress the weight we need to build academic muscle, or is it just a heavy burden that leaves us too exhausted to actually lead?

Tonight, we are dissecting the education system’s "pressure cooker." We’re asking:

What happens when you finally get the degree, but you’ve lost your peace of mind in the process?

Stop justifying the burnout for a second. Let’s talk about whether this stress is a bridge to the future or a barrier to our growth.

  • ASUU Rejects Proposed UK University Campus in Nigeria.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has rejected agreements between the Federal Government and the United Kingdom on education, including plans to establish a campus of Coventry University in Nigeria.

ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, stated the union’s position at a public lecture organised by the ASUU branch of Sa’adu Zungur University, warning that the move could undermine Nigeria’s higher education system.

He criticised the proposed campus, describing it as exploitative and inconsistent with the treatment of Nigerian students seeking education in the UK.

“They have denied Nigerians visas to study in the UK, yet they are coming here to establish universities and take our money, this is another form of colonialism, and ASUU will strongly oppose it,” Prof. Piwuna said.

The ASUU president also argued that some foreign universities were expanding into countries like Nigeria due to financial pressures and declining international student enrolment, insisting that local institutions should instead be strengthened.

He further stressed the need to preserve the committee system in Nigerian universities, warning against excessive concentration of powers in the offices of Vice Chancellors.

As the ultimatum issued by ASUU to the Federal Government on salary implementation for Professors expires, we await their next line of action.

  • Business Stoary Private Pre-Launch Recap
Headline: The Mastermind That Changed Everything.

Last night, a select group of University of Port Harcourt student entrepreneurs gathered behind "closed doors" to rewrite the future of their brands. The Business Stoary Private Pre-Launch was more than just a meeting; it was a shift in the atmosphere of campus entrepreneurship.

We had the distinct honor and privilege of hosting the one and only The Janel Rowland as our lead resource person. For someone with a vision as large and a schedule as demanding as hers, having her dedicate her time to teach our student founders was nothing short of a gift.
Janel didn't just "speak"—she dismantled old mindsets and rebuilt them with professional strategy, storytelling, and soul. To have someone of her caliber guide our very first cohort is a milestone we don't take lightly.

To Janel Rowland: Thank you for choosing to invest in the next generation of Uniport founders. Your insights are the fuel that will power these businesses to the global stage. We are beyond grateful to have had you lead this charge.

To our participants: You just received a world-class education. Now, go and show the world what you’ve learned.

    NEXT STEPS:
📩 Check Your Email: Your post-session action plan has landed!
💡 Execution is Key: Our DMs are open for any implementation questions. We are here to help you build.

Let’s keep building. Because at the end of the day... Stoary means business.

  • EDITORIAL: The Power of Content Creators in Uniport — Personal & Departmental.

In today’s digital age, content creation has moved beyond entertainment — it has become a powerful tool for communication, branding, education, and community building. Within the University of Port Harcourt, content creators (both personal and departmental) are redefining how stories are told, especially across social platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.

From skit makers, videographers, designers, writers, photographers, podcasters, to social media managers, Uniport is home to a growing network of creative minds using these platforms to document campus life, promote events, share academic updates, and highlight student culture. Through reels, short videos, livestreams, stories, and posts, these creators are shaping the digital identity of Uniport daily.

    📍The Benefits to the University.

    1. Increased Visibility & Branding:
With the massive reach of TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, student creators help project Uniport’s culture, excellence, and vibrancy to audiences far beyond the campus. Viral content, engaging reels, and trending formats boost the school’s online presence and brand appeal.

    2. Fast & Effective Information Dissemination:
Departmental pages and student platforms use these social media channels to quickly circulate announcements, academic updates, timetables, events, and opportunities — ensuring information reaches students in real time.

    3. Stronger Student Engagement:
Interactive content such as reels, polls, live sessions, challenges, and stories fosters connection, participation, and unity among students, making campus life more engaging and inclusive.

    4. Talent Development & Digital Skills:
Through content creation, students gain practical experience in videography, editing, digital marketing, storytelling, branding, and analytics — skills highly relevant in today’s job market.

    5. Digital Documentation & Legacy:
Social media serves as a living archive of Uniport’s academic journey, student achievements, cultural moments, and memorable events.

📍How Uniport Can Better Utilize Content Creators & Social Platforms.

    1. Strategic Digital Partnerships:
The university management, faculties, departments, and student bodies can collaborate with trusted creators to produce official content for orientations, matriculations, convocations, seminars, competitions, and major campus events.

    2. Structured Departmental Media Teams:
Each department and faculty can establish dedicated media teams to manage their TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook pages for consistent communication and branding.

    3. Training, Workshops & Media Bootcamps:
Regular training sessions can equip students with advanced skills in content strategy, storytelling, editing, platform algorithms, ethical media use, and digital professionalism.

    4. Recognition, Incentives & Support:
Providing awards, certificates, media grants, equipment support, and official recognition will motivate creators and encourage higher-quality content production.

    5. Centralized Digital Communication Strategy:
Uniport can develop a unified digital media framework that integrates student creators into its official communication channels, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and professionalism.

Content creators in Uniport are more than entertainers — they are digital storytellers, brand ambassadors, and community builders. Through platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, they amplify campus voices, promote student excellence, and connect Uniport to the global digital space.

At Unique Stoary, we believe in authentic storytelling and purposeful content. When empowered and properly integrated, Uniport’s content creators can transform campus communication and redefine the university’s digital identity.
