Uniport Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill Participates in the British Council’s Transnational Education (TNE) Event in Abuja.

The British Council’s Transnational Education (TNE) event in Abuja is an initiative designed to strengthen global academic partnerships and expand educational opportunities for Nigerian universities.

In his update following the event, Prof. Georgewill explained that the British Council is taking the lead in sensitizing Nigerian institutions on the value of Transnational Education. He emphasized that TNE will play a key role in improving national diversity, driving internationalization, and supporting capacity building across universities. He also highlighted how TNE aligns with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, expands access to quality education, enhances quality assurance and quality control, and helps universities meet the growing demand that domestic higher education alone cannot satisfy.

Through engagements like this, the University of Port Harcourt continues to push toward a more globally connected and academically competitive future.

‎Two days ago, I went to work at Mercy Land, Port Harcourt. And after I was done with the job, I was paid a little cash, and I started leaving for home. Just before the east-west road where I can board a taxi to my base, which is at Uniport environment, I met a group of adults begging. There are about 6-7 of them, ladies included.

‎It was one of them that stopped me, and the way he approached, I thought they were doing evangelism in the streets. He now said Please, I want to talk to you and I said, " I'm all ears. He started by saying he wanted to ask me for a small favour, I said Alright, if it's something I can do, then why not? 🤷‍♂️ All in my thoughts, he would ask for a few of my time so he can share the gospel of Jesus Christ with me.

‎But guess what? He started telling me that he and his colleagues have not eaten since morning, and they have been walking around and even getting thirsty and they needed to get water and drink but they don't have any money with them, he wants to seek a favour from me if I can help them with a little money so they can eat. I looked at him, a mature, well-grown-up adult, and I looked at his colleagues, and all of them are the same.

‎And I asked him, Do they stay around this environment? And he said No, I then asked again, Then what did you come here to do and he said They are selling products, and they haven't made any sales yet. It now dawned on me that these are Neo-life kind of related people. I know they don't like to hear the truth at all because I have encountered a lot of them in the past.

‎I told him bro, let me tell you what you don't want to hear, don't allow any company to limit your potential as a vibrant youth and forcefully turn you into a street beggar. You aren't a lazy person, you're a hardworking person, and the hard work I'm seeing in you, if you channel that in the right way, you will never find yourself begging in the streets.

‎I know you don't want to hear this bitter truth, but for the fact that you sell a product and you met me, instead of you to advertise the product you're selling, and tell me how the product will be of a help or meet a particular need for me and why I need to buy it, but you're here begging me of money. That completely shows that your products don't solve any problem in the marketplace. Your products don't meet people's needs, and they're not in demand in the marketplace. Why then are you wasting your life on this?

‎Imagine the long kilometres of trekking on an empty stomach in an unknown environment? 🤔 I told him, you're an adult, you should be able to identify a good opportunity and a waste of time. How do you even convince yourself against this reality and forcefully accept being a street beggar? I told him after so many encounters with people like you, I have made up my mind never to take you guys seriously but I am going to help you with what I can because I am a member of Gateway International Church and this is our month of random out of kindness, and I'd be showing you kindness for that reason only. 🤷‍♂️

‎I took about 30% of my payment and gave it to them and they left. It's not up to a 1-minute walk, and another set of beggars stopped me again, the same category of people. I didn't even waste my time; I just told them I have given their colleagues what I have, and I'm not giving out any shishi even if they mistakenly swallow a shovel now now before me. 🙄 They were like, Why is everyone saying they have given to their colleagues? I was like What do you expect when you willingly accept being a street beggar?

‎Personally, once you fall into those categories of people, my heart of kindness towards you is gone, and I will never take you seriously in life.

Uniport Defeats RSU, IAUE To Retain Championship at ICAN PH District Quiz Competition.

The University of Port Harcourt has once again emerged victorious at the 2nd Edition of the ICAN Port Harcourt & District Society Quiz Competition for Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State — successfully defending the title after winning the maiden edition last year.

A big commendation goes to Dr. Henry Wobo and the dedicated academic team for their guidance and mentorship. Special recognition goes to the brilliant student team — Olaniyi, Nwobodo, Providence, Kizito, Josephine, Olulu-Briggs, Okramate, and Kenneth — all from the Department of Accounting, for delivering an outstanding performance.

The Weight We Carry as Medical Students.

Sometimes I wish people understood that studying Medicine is more than wearing a lab coat or carrying a stethoscope. It is a journey that constantly threatens to break you — not just academically, but emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

As a medical student, your entire future can hang on one exam — MBBS.

One.
Single.
Exam.

People say, “Just read, you’ll pass,” but they don’t understand the fear that crawls into your lungs when you’re studying at 2am, fighting sleep with coffee and tears, because you’re afraid of what happens if you fail.

Because in Medicine, failure isn’t just failure.
It is rejection. Repetition. Reset.

While other students retake a course and move forward, medical students are told:

“You didn’t pass. Start again.”

Do you know what it feels like to watch your mates move ahead while you go back to the beginning?
To sit in a class where you’re now the “older one”?
To pretend you’re okay while battling shame, disappointment, and the feeling that maybe you’re not good enough to save lives?

It’s emotional torture.

You study harder than you’ve ever studied in your life, with a level of fear that no one prepares you for. And even when you pass, the relief doesn’t feel like victory — it feels like survival. Like you escaped something designed to swallow you whole.

People see our white coats. They don’t see the panic attacks, the self-doubt, the nights we whisper prayers through trembling lips:

“God, please don’t let this be the end for me.”

Every MBBS stage feels like standing at the edge of a cliff — one wrong step and the whole journey restarts. And somehow, we are expected to be strong. To smile. To keep going.

But the truth is, many of us are tired.
Not because we don’t love Medicine, but because Medicine demands pieces of us we didn’t know we could give.

Still… we push.
We fight.
We hope.

Because we believe that one day, all this pain, pressure, and emotional weight will turn into purpose — and into the lives we will save.

Until then, we carry on.
Not because we’re strong…
But because we refuse to give up on the dream.
