    Episode 11: The Exam Week
The dreaded exam week dawned at Uniport, halls filled with tense students. Ada's first paper, physics, started at 8 AM in the massive exam center. She double-checked her ID card and stationery. Questions challenged her, but steady breathing helped recall facts. Time flew; she submitted with a mix of relief and worry. Between papers, quick revisions in the shade of baobab trees. Chidi's computer science exam clashed with hers, but they texted encouragement. A power cut mid-exam tested resilience—lanterns lit the way. Ada aced chemistry, her lab practice paying off. Fatigue set in by week's end, but adrenaline pushed through. Post-exam, friends debriefed at the buka, laughing over tricky questions. Grades anxiety loomed, but Ada reflected on her effort. As she walked the illuminated paths, she knew exams were milestones on the success road.

  • Uniport Alumni Spotlight: Dame Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff, Queen of Twon Brass kingdom and Chairperson/Proprietress, Titare Star Royal Academy.

Dame Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff stands tall as one of the University of Port Harcourt’s most distinguished alumni — a woman whose life journey reflects the values of excellence, courage and service that Uniport continues to nurture.

An alumna of the Department of Theatre Arts, Dame Dr. Diete-Spiff graduated in 1992, leaving an indelible mark on campus life as the President of the Students’ Union. Her tenure was defined by bold leadership and uncommon resolve, most notably her role in spearheading initiatives that helped curb cultism and restore peace on campus — a feat that remains memorable in the university’s history.

Beyond Uniport, her academic and professional pursuits demonstrate a relentless commitment to growth. She holds a Law degree from Rivers State University of Science and Technology and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2007. Her global academic footprint includes an MBA from the University of Liverpool (UK), a Doctor of Business Administration from Walden University (USA), an Honorary PhD from Ashland University, Ohio, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Education from Walden University.

Today, she is widely known as the Queen of Twon Brass Kingdom in Bayelsa State, seamlessly blending traditional leadership with modern governance, advocacy and entrepreneurship. An evangelist, educationist and corporate leader, Dame Dr. Diete-Spiff has held key leadership positions across diverse sectors, including manufacturing, education, legal services and corporate governance. She has served as Independent Director at University Press PLC and is the Chairperson/Proprietress of Titare Star Royal Academy, among other notable roles.

Driven by a passion for impact, she founded the HRM Dr. Josephine Alfred Diete-Spiff Foundation, a platform dedicated to youth and women empowerment, skills development and community upliftment. Her work continues to empower lives, particularly among vulnerable groups, reinforcing her belief that true leadership is measured by service.

Reflecting on her time at Uniport, Dame Dr. Diete-Spiff has often described the institution as unique, crediting it for shaping her into a well-rounded individual capable of excelling across disciplines and cultures. From the stage to the courtroom, the boardroom to the throne, her journey affirms Uniport’s reputation as a breeding ground for transformational leaders.

Dame Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff remains a shining example of what it means to be “Uniport Made” — bold in vision, grounded in values, and committed to national development.

If you know any Uniport Alumni doing exploits, do well to mention them in the comment section and we might just shine the spotlight on them.

  • A Day in My Life as a Student.

Today was one of those days I won’t forget in a hurry. After leaving home early and battling through heavy traffic, I finally got to school around 10 a.m. I was already stressed, but I had a lot to do.

My first stop was at my processor’s office in Choba. I went there to discuss paying the balance of my school fees. I had earlier applied for the NELFUND student loan, and my portal showed that the application had been verified and the money disbursed to the school. So, naturally, I expected that it would reflect and complete my payment.

However, my processor told me I wasn’t the only one in this situation. He advised me to be patient and give it some time—probably until January ending—so the funds could be fully processed by the school.

From there, I headed into campus to secure a hostel space. That’s where the real stress began. The supervisor initially told me that there were no available spaces. Honestly, I understood, since I came late due to distance and other factors. Still, I pleaded with them and eventually paid around ₦130,000 to get a space—though it wasn’t exactly what I had in mind.
On getting there, the environment was tense. Students were bitterly complaining about their belongings getting stolen during the hostel renovation. Many had left their rooms open, as instructed, but came back to find things missing. One girl I spoke to was in tears—her NYSC certificate was found in the dustbin, her gas cylinder was stolen, and a textbook she bought for ₦40,000 was gone. She reported it to the dean, but nothing came out of it.

Honestly, today drained me. Being a student is not easy at all. Balancing school, stress, finances, and accommodation issues takes a lot of strength and understanding.

To make things worse, I didn’t attend class today because my coursemate told me there was no lecture. Only for me to find out later that they took attendance! That part really pained me. I just had to submit my assignment and leave.

In all, today was both exhausting and eye-opening. It’s one of those days that reminds you how tough student life can be—but also how strong we really are. An experience worth sharing.

  • Reading was not a habit I grew up with.

Yes, I said it. I wasn’t that girl who always had a book in her hand or spent hours in the library.
In fact, I was among those students who— even if we didn’t read— would still pass the exams.

And that’s how unconscious reading became a habit.
I found reading difficult. It just wasn’t my thing.

Meanwhile, my dad could sit for hours reading. You’d walk into his room, and he’d be lost in a book.
One day he called all of us and said,

    > “This thing you all do is not good. I have a library here, and you all walk in, see me reading, and walk out. None of you want to learn this habit from me.”

    That statement stuck.
And that day, I decided to rethink my life.

  • ‎Two days ago, I went to work at Mercy Land, Port Harcourt. And after I was done with the job, I was paid a little cash, and I started leaving for home. Just before the east-west road where I can board a taxi to my base, which is at Uniport environment, I met a group of adults begging. There are about 6-7 of them, ladies included.

‎It was one of them that stopped me, and the way he approached, I thought they were doing evangelism in the streets. He now said Please, I want to talk to you and I said, " I'm all ears. He started by saying he wanted to ask me for a small favour, I said Alright, if it's something I can do, then why not? All in my thoughts, he would ask for a few of my time so he can share the gospel of Jesus Christ with me.

‎But guess what? He started telling me that he and his colleagues have not eaten since morning, and they have been walking around and even getting thirsty and they needed to get water and drink but they don't have any money with them, he wants to seek a favour from me if I can help them with a little money so they can eat. I looked at him, a mature, well-grown-up adult, and I looked at his colleagues, and all of them are the same.

‎And I asked him, Do they stay around this environment? And he said No, I then asked again, Then what did you come here to do and he said They are selling products, and they haven't made any sales yet. It now dawned on me that these are Neo-life kind of related people. I know they don't like to hear the truth at all because I have encountered a lot of them in the past.

‎I told him bro, let me tell you what you don't want to hear, don't allow any company to limit your potential as a vibrant youth and forcefully turn you into a street beggar. You aren't a lazy person, you're a hardworking person, and the hard work I'm seeing in you, if you channel that in the right way, you will never find yourself begging in the streets.

‎I know you don't want to hear this bitter truth, but for the fact that you sell a product and you met me, instead of you to advertise the product you're selling, and tell me how the product will be of a help or meet a particular need for me and why I need to buy it, but you're here begging me of money. That completely shows that your products don't solve any problem in the marketplace. Your products don't meet people's needs, and they're not in demand in the marketplace. Why then are you wasting your life on this?

‎Imagine the long kilometres of trekking on an empty stomach in an unknown environment? I told him, you're an adult, you should be able to identify a good opportunity and a waste of time. How do you even convince yourself against this reality and forcefully accept being a street beggar? I told him after so many encounters with people like you, I have made up my mind never to take you guys seriously but I am going to help you with what I can because I am a member of Gateway International Church and this is our month of random out of kindness, and I'd be showing you kindness for that reason only.

‎I took about 30% of my payment and gave it to them and they left. It's not up to a 1-minute walk, and another set of beggars stopped me again, the same category of people. I didn't even waste my time; I just told them I have given their colleagues what I have, and I'm not giving out any shishi even if they mistakenly swallow a shovel now now before me. They were like, Why is everyone saying they have given to their colleagues? I was like What do you expect when you willingly accept being a street beggar?

‎Personally, once you fall into those categories of people, my heart of kindness towards you is gone, and I will never take you seriously in life.
    ‎Shikenan

  • Uniport Pharmacy Students Reeling After Shocking ICT Results: 95% Failure Rate Sparks Outrage

A sense of shock and dismay has swept through the 200 Level Pharmacy program at the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) following the release of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) exam results. The outcome was nothing short of devastating, with 129 students failing, a mere 7 passing, and not a single student achieving a distinction.

This staggering 95% failure rate has left many students feeling frustrated, confused, and wondering what went wrong. The news is made even more bitter by the fact that those who failed will have to resit the course, a move that comes with a hefty price tag of ₦10,000 per student. To add insult to injury, the students were reportedly under the impression that they could carry the course over, as stated in the handbook.

The students are now calling the situation "unfair and confusing", and many are questioning the fairness of the system. "How could this happen?" is the question on everyone's lips. The massive failure rate has sparked outrage among the student body, with many demanding answers from the university administration.

The situation has raised concerns about the quality of teaching, the effectiveness of the course materials, and the support systems in place for students. As the students prepare to resit the course, they are left wondering what the future holds and how they will move forward.

The Uniport administration has yet to comment on the situation, but one thing is certain - this shocking result has left a mark on the 200 Level Pharmacy program and will have far-reaching consequences for the students involved.

The Uniport administration has yet to comment on the situation, but one thing is certain - this shocking result has left a mark on the 200 Level Pharmacy program and will have far-reaching consequences for the students involved. #Uniport_Story #Pharmacy_faculty
