EDITORIAL: Beyond the Dissolution—What Happens to Students' Democracy and Campus Life at Uniport? The University of Port Harcourt community on Sunday, 19th July 2026, were stunned by one of the most consequential administrative decisions in recent student union history: the immediate dissolution of the Students' Union Government (SUG), Hall Representatives, and all other Students' Union activities. The University's position is clear. Through a memorandum signed by the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the directive of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike, the administration has ordered the immediate handover of all union property and directed elected officials to appear before an investigative panel to account for their stewardship. Equally swift was the response from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, rejected the dissolution, arguing that while allegations of misconduct should be investigated, elected student leaders deserve due process, transparency, and fair hearing. Will these events continue under university supervision, be postponed indefinitely, or be cancelled altogether? There is also uncertainty surrounding Play Fest, an initiative championed by the In-House Senate Chairman on Socials, Senator Otto Joshua, as well as the Functional Students Campaign 2026, a drug awareness programme organized by the Directorate of Students with Special Needs and hosted by Senator Henry Ikechukwu in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Rivers State Command. A total of 62 Senators were in attendance, thereby forming a quorum for the legislative business of the day. The Senate President declared the plenary open. The Aluta Anthem was duly observed. The Plenary Proceedings Commenced with an Opening Prayer led by Sen. Bestman Ayebaye. RESOLUTIONS OF THE SITTING Adoption Of Agenda The Senate President read the agenda for the day. The adoption of the agenda forday as a working document was moved by Sen. Amarachi Atuoma and seconded by Sen. Adumo Favour. Address by the Senate President i) The Senate President frowns at the impersonation of the Senate Leadership by unscrupulous element masquerading themselves as Senate Leadership. ii) The Senate President averred that the Senate does not have any faction and that the authentic Senate is that led by his humble self and duly recognized by the School, with the Mace Signifying Symbol of authority. COMMITTEE FINDINGS The Committee which was set up by the Senate President to investigate some of the Pertinent issues Surrounding the Executive President, Senator Tamunotonye Amaechi Olaziba Walson, The Students' Union Treasurer, Ejike Lovechi and the Financial Secretary. The Committee reports that: (i) The Committee read that after the Executive President sent out a plea for extension by a week for account of stewardship upon receiving the Correspondence from the Senate which was granted, but up until this day, the Executive President has evaded the Committee's Call. (ii) The Committee finds that the Treasurer/Financial Secretary made revelations regarding the siphoning of funds and illegally transferring monies made for the Union to his Personal accounts, with evidence she presented. The Committee also found that the President has since been acting against the extant laws of the Constitution and has operated in a manner akin to executive rascality. In view of the recent developments, Senator Caleb Asemo moved a motion for impeachment of the Executive President and seconded by Senator Obed. A Voice Vote was had and the majority had it. (iii) The Senate President directs that Vice President Etim Blessing takes over immediately. ACTIONS OF THE DEPUTY SENATE PRESIDENT Following the Unconstitutional acts by the Deputy Senate President, Iben. Uranta by setting up a faction of the Authentic Senate and parading himself as an acting Senate President without any crisis emanating from the Senate or any formal delegation by the Senate President to act on his behalf, A motion for indefinite suspension of the Deputy Senate President was moved by Senator James Veta and seconded by Senator Amarachi Fortunate. A two-third Vote was had and the majority had it. ADJOURNMENT Having exhausted the agenda of the day, motion for adjournment was moved by Senator Letom Earnest and seconded by Senator Gabriel Miebi. Uniport SUG Crisis Deepens as Senate Orders Probe Into SUG President, Removes Director of Socials. Fresh tension has erupted within the University of Port Harcourt Students’ Union Government (SUG) following a high-stakes plenary session of the 10th Students’ Representative Council (Senate), chaired by Senate President, Dist. Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma. The plenary, held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, addressed issues bordering on constitutional compliance, administrative accountability and financial stewardship within the Union. According to the official resolutions released after the sitting, the Senate announced the removal of the Director of Socials, Comrade Tamunokuro Anga Lawrence, following findings presented by an investigative panel set up by the Senate. The committee reportedly found alleged evidence of administrative and financial lapses and further accused the suspended Director of continuing to parade himself publicly as Director of Socials despite an existing Senate suspension and resolution. The report also alleged that he proceeded to organize unapproved activities and events while still under suspension. In addition, the Senate stated that Comr. Tamunokuro Lawrence failed to honour Senate summons, with the committee reportedly describing his notice of absence as “short, watery and frivolous.” Following deliberations, Senator Omanoye Victory moved a motion for his permanent removal, which was seconded by Senator James Erhuwuwu. The motion was subsequently adopted through a majority voice vote. The Senate thereafter called on the Chief Justice to affirm and swear in the in-house Chairman on Socials, Senator Otto Joshua, as the new Director of Socials. The plenary also shifted attention to concerns surrounding financial stewardship within the SUG leadership. According to the Senate, notices had earlier been sent to the Presidency, the Treasurer, the Financial Secretary and the Director of Transport. The Senate disclosed that: • The President sent a notice of absence alongside a request for one-week grace to appear before the Senate. • The Treasurer and Financial Secretary appeared before the Senate and were interrogated during the sitting. • The Director of Transport reportedly failed to honour the Senate’s invitation. Following deliberations and interrogation of available officials, the Senate stated that allegations bordering on presidential financial irregularities and breaches of constitutional provisions emerged. Consequently, the Senate leadership announced the constitution of a five-man investigative committee to probe the Executive President Senator Amaechi Tamunotonye Walson and report its findings and recommendations back to the Senate. Speaking during the plenary, Senate President Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma reportedly charged Senators to remain firm in defending constitutional order and insisted that the Senate under his leadership would not be influenced externally. The Senate also explained that the plenary was moved online due to security concerns, low turnout and the presence of unidentified persons around the physical venue.
