  • Uniport SUG Crisis Deepens as Senate Orders Probe Into SUG President, Removes Director of Socials.

Fresh tension has erupted within the University of Port Harcourt Students’ Union Government (SUG) following a high-stakes plenary session of the 10th Students’ Representative Council (Senate), chaired by Senate President, Dist. Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma.

The plenary, held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, addressed issues bordering on constitutional compliance, administrative accountability and financial stewardship within the Union.

According to the official resolutions released after the sitting, the Senate announced the removal of the Director of Socials, Comrade Tamunokuro Anga Lawrence, following findings presented by an investigative panel set up by the Senate.

The committee reportedly found alleged evidence of administrative and financial lapses and further accused the suspended Director of continuing to parade himself publicly as Director of Socials despite an existing Senate suspension and resolution. The report also alleged that he proceeded to organize unapproved activities and events while still under suspension. In addition, the Senate stated that Comr. Tamunokuro Lawrence failed to honour Senate summons, with the committee reportedly describing his notice of absence as “short, watery and frivolous.”

Following deliberations, Senator Omanoye Victory moved a motion for his permanent removal, which was seconded by Senator James Erhuwuwu. The motion was subsequently adopted through a majority voice vote. The Senate thereafter called on the Chief Justice to affirm and swear in the in-house Chairman on Socials, Senator Otto Joshua, as the new Director of Socials.

The plenary also shifted attention to concerns surrounding financial stewardship within the SUG leadership.

According to the Senate, notices had earlier been sent to the Presidency, the Treasurer, the Financial Secretary and the Director of Transport.

    The Senate disclosed that:

    • The President sent a notice of absence alongside a request for one-week grace to appear before the Senate.

    • The Treasurer and Financial Secretary appeared before the Senate and were interrogated during the sitting.

    • The Director of Transport reportedly failed to honour the Senate’s invitation.

Following deliberations and interrogation of available officials, the Senate stated that allegations bordering on presidential financial irregularities and breaches of constitutional provisions emerged.

Consequently, the Senate leadership announced the constitution of a five-man investigative committee to probe the Executive President Senator Amaechi Tamunotonye Walson and report its findings and recommendations back to the Senate.

Speaking during the plenary, Senate President Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma reportedly charged Senators to remain firm in defending constitutional order and insisted that the Senate under his leadership would not be influenced externally.

The Senate also explained that the plenary was moved online due to security concerns, low turnout and the presence of unidentified persons around the physical venue.

The unfolding developments have since sparked widespread reactions across the Uniport student community, with many students closely monitoring what could become one of the most consequential political moments within the current SUG administration.

  • OFFICE OF THE SENATE PRESIDENT

    DATE: 3rd May, 2026

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE AND SOLIDARITY TO THE UNICROSS COMMUNITY

The 10th Senate, Students’ Union Government, University of Port Harcourt, led by Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Desmond ILEGIMOKUMA, Senate President and Chairman, Rivers State Institute of Legislative Leaders Forum (RIVSILLF), expresses its deepest sorrow over the tragic incident that has shaken the University of Cross River State community.

The loss of young, promising student leaders and the injuries sustained by others, including key members of the Students’ Union Government, is a painful reality that has touched the entire Niger Delta student movement.

This unfortunate occurrence has robbed the student community of voices filled with purpose, courage, and dedication. These were individuals committed to service, advocacy, and the progress of their peers. Their absence is deeply felt, and their contributions will not be forgotten.

Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the departed. We pray that God grants them comfort, strength, and the grace to endure this painful loss. To those currently receiving medical attention, we extend our prayers for healing, restoration, and a swift recovery. May strength find them in this critical time.

We urge the entire UNICROSS community to remain united, support one another, and find strength in togetherness. In moments like this, solidarity and compassion become our greatest pillars.

Please be assured that the 10th Senate, SUG UNIPORT, and the Rivers State student body stand with you in grief and in hope. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may healing come to every heart affected by this tragedy.

  • EDITORIAL: Understanding the Organizational Structure and Hierarchy of a Federal University.

The comment section was buzzing last week. We posted a birthday shout-out to our Unique Chancellor, HRH Major-General (Dr.) Muhammadu Ilyasu Bashar (Rtd), and the reactions were eye-opening. Amidst the celebratory comments, a recurring question popped up: "Wait, we have a Chancellor? I thought the VC was the boss?"

For many students, the university begins and ends with their Departmental HOD or the Vice Chancellor. However, the University of Port Harcourt, same as other Federal Universities, operates under a sophisticated structure. Understanding this hierarchy isn't just for political science majors; it’s essential for every student who wants to understand how their degree is governed.

-> Level 1: The External Authority (The Visitor)

At the absolute peak of the pyramid is the Visitor.

In all Federal Universities, the Visitor is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The Visitor holds the ultimate authority, appointing the Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor, and key members of the Governing Council.

-> Level 2: The Titular & Policy Leaders

These officers represent the prestige and the legislative "backbone" of the institution.

    • The Chancellor: The titular head of the University. Currently HRH Major-General (Dr.) Muhammadu Ilyasu Bashar (Rtd), the Emir of Gwandu. He takes precedence over everyone else and presides over Convocation ceremonies for the award of degrees.

    • The Pro-Chancellor: The Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa. He oversees the "Board of Directors" for the school. The Council manages finances, university property, and major administrative appointments.

-> Level 3: The Executive Management (The VC & Team)

This is the "Engine Room" where daily campus life is managed.

    • The Vice Chancellor: The Chief Executive and Chief Academic Officer, Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill. He is the "Manager" of the University, directing affairs toward our vision and mission. He chairs the Senate—the body that approves your results and academic curriculum. The VC is assisted by three specialized deputies who oversee the core pillars of the university:

°° DVC (Academics): Professor Rosemary Ogu– Oversees all matters related to teaching, curriculum, and student academic progress.

°° DVC (Administration): Professor Chukwudi Onyeasor – Manages the personnel, staff welfare, and general administrative logistics of the campus.

°° DVC (Research & Development): Professor Angela Frank-Briggs – Focuses on the university’s research output, grants, and academic innovation.

-> Level 4: The Principal Officers (The Administrators)

While the VC leads, these officers ensure the specialized departments function legally and financially.

    • The Registrar: Mrs. Gloria Chindah PhD. The Chief Administrative Officer and "Chief Scribe" to the Council and Senate.

    • The Bursar: Dr. Godpower Obah. The Chief Financial Officer responsible for the control of all university funds.

    • The University Librarian: Professor Helen Emasealu. The custodian of knowledge, coordinating all library services across the campus.

The university is more than just a collection of lecture halls; it is a structured mini-state. When we celebrate the birthday of a Chancellor or a VC, we aren't just celebrating a person—we are acknowledging the stability of the system that validates your hard work.

From the Visitor to the Principal Officers, every tier of this hierarchy exists to ensure that the Unique brand remains a beacon of excellence. Knowing who is who is the first step in truly belonging to the community.

    Stay Unique.

  • EDITORIAL The Beautiful Game and the Power of Purpose: A Landmark Day at Uniport.

The roar of the crowd, the scent of fresh turf, and the palpable tension of a final whistle—last Friday, March 20, 2026, the University of Port Harcourt Stadium became more than just a sports arena; it was a theater of dreams. The Chief Ollor’s Football Leagues Finale wasn’t just a conclusion to a season; it was a masterclass in student engagement, community support, and the sheer, unadulterated joy of football.

The "double-header" lived up to its billing, delivering two high-stakes encounters where tactical discipline outweighed reckless abandon. In the Uniport Conference League, the Young Professionals proved their name was more than a moniker. In a tight, grueling match against KIZX FC, they secured a slim but decisive 1:0 victory. The "clash of titans" promised tactical brilliance, and the Professionals delivered exactly that, locking down their defense to see the game through.

The main event, the Uniport Champions League, saw the Hungry Lions face off against MCB. True to their name, the Lions displayed a predatory instinct. Despite a spirited resistance from MCB, the Lions found the back of the net to claim a 1:0 win, etching their names into the annals of Uniport sporting history.

What elevated this finale was the heavy presence of University, Student Union Government, and Local Government leadership. Seeing the stadium filled to 75% capacity was a testament to the thriving sports culture on campus. The sponsor, Chief Hon. Obarilomate Ollor, Executive Chairman of Eleme LGA, didn't just provide a name for the league; he showed up. His presence, alongside the Uniport Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. C.C. Wokocha, and a robust delegation from the Uniport SUG, sent a clear message: student extracurriculars are a priority.

The Uniport SUG was represented across all arms, highlighting the unified support for the tournament:
    - Executive Arm: Led by the SUG President, Senator Amaechi Tamunotonye Walson, and the Vice President, Comrade Etim Blessing Bassey, along with various past and present executives.
    - Legislative Arm: Led by the SUG Senate President, Senator Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma, accompanied by a distinguished assembly of Senators.
    - Judicial Arm: Led by the SUG Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Dimkpa Noble La-Alenebari Lah, alongside Judges from the Judiciary.

Behind the seamless execution of this sporting spectacle was the tireless work of the Uniport SUG Director of Sports, Comrade Bolarinwa David Olaniyi, and his dedicated team. It is one thing to have a vision; it is another to manifest it with such precision. Comrade Olaniyi has proven himself to be a bridge-builder, successfully securing the partnership of Chief Hon. Obarilomate Ollor. During a strategic launch by the Director of Sports, Chief Ollor underscored his commitment to youth development with a substantial #2,000,000 support—a feat that speaks volumes of the trust and credibility Olaniyi and his team have built within and outside the university community. Their ability to manage high-level stakeholders while keeping the grassroots student interest at heart is nothing short of exemplary.

The organizers promised an entertainment experience, and they delivered. From the witty banter of Comedian Danny Spry and host MC Olaks, to the expert commentary of Uzzy D Good Guy, the atmosphere was electric. Musical performances by Eminonso & D4YG, coupled with the high-octane moves of Naira David, ensured that even during lulls in play, the energy never dipped. Crucially, the "vibe" was matched by impeccable organization. Branded water for every attendee and a visible security presence ensured that the massive crowd remained hydrated and safe—a logistical feat that stands as a tribute to the Director of Sports' commitment to excellence.

The Chief Ollor’s Football Leagues Finale was a resounding success. It proved that when student leadership—driven by the proactive Comrade Bolarinwa David Olaniyi and his team—local government support, and raw talent converge, the result is nothing short of historic. The Hungry Lions and Young Professionals may have walked away with the trophies, but the entire Uniport community walked away with a renewed sense of pride.

The bar for campus sports has been set. The question is: who will rise to meet it next year?
