  • UPDATE: Former Uniport Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi Assumes Office As UniAbuja Vice Chancellor Despite Earlier Protests Over Eligibility.

In a significant turn of events, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi — former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Port Harcourt — has officially assumed duty as the 8th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja on Thursday December 11, 2025 despite earlier protests challenging his eligibility.

His appointment, which was approved by the University’s 11th Governing Council during its 80th Extraordinary Meeting on November 7, 2025, was initially set to take effect from February 10, 2026, for a single, non-renewable five-year tenure. However, Prof. Fawehinmi has now taken over the leadership of the institution following a formal handover from the Acting Vice Chancellor.

Unique Stoary had congratulated Prof. Fawehinmi on November 11, 2025, shortly after his appointment was announced, acknowledging his academic leadership and breadth of administrative experience. But barely a month later, a coalition of academic staff — the Concerned Academic Stakeholders of the University of Abuja — publicly rejected the appointment, alleging that Prof. Fawehinmi did not possess a Ph.D., which they insisted was explicitly required in the advertised criteria for the Vice Chancellorship.

According to the stakeholders, though Prof. Fawehinmi is widely respected for his scholarly contributions, professional fellowships, and administrative competence, fellowships cannot replace a doctoral degree — a long-established qualification under NUC norms. They further warned that proceeding with the appointment could raise governance and legal concerns for the institution.

Despite the objections, the Governing Council has upheld its decision, and Prof. Fawehinmi has now officially resumed duties. Upon assumption of office, he pledged to strengthen academic excellence, enhance research output, promote institutional stability, and improve the student experience, emphasizing a commitment to collaboration across all sectors of the university.

As reactions continue to trail this development, the university community and the wider public are watching closely to see how this new phase of leadership will shape the institution going forward.

Once again, Unique Stoary congratulates Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi on his assumption of office as the 8th Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja. We wish him a purposeful, progressive, and impactful tenure as he takes on the enormous task of steering the university toward greater academic excellence, stability, and innovation.

  • EDITORIAL: Clarity at Last—But Questions Remain on the ₦50 Million First Lady’s Award.

In recent days, the University of Port Harcourt community has witnessed renewed conversations surrounding the ₦50,000,000 donation made by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to support Best Graduating Female Students during the 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony.

This discussion gained momentum following our earlier publication titled:
“A Call For Transparency In The Disbursement Of The ₦50 Million First Lady’s Award To Uniport Best Graduating Female Students.”

Our concerns focused on three key issues:

    1. Uneven communication to beneficiaries.
    2. The disbursement of only ₦100,000 per student, which mathematically represents only 10% of the total donation even if 50 beneficiaries existed.
    3. The absence of an official explanation regarding how the ₦50 million would be administered.

Shortly afterwards, a Best Graduating Female Student from the Department of Geology, Ujah Amarachi, shared her personal experience on LinkedIn. Her post read:

“Uniport has finally given me my cash prize for being a Best Graduating Female Student and I'm so happy. … I finally received the money I was paid 100K guys.”

She appreciated the First Lady and added:

“But wait oh!! I just want to ask a question.

    1. Do I keep receiving 100k for 10 year.
    2. Or this is a one time payment
You won't blame me for asking. The money given was 50Million naira. Not five but fifty … Let’s be clear: I am grateful. But we all know that if ₦50 million is shared only among Best Graduating Female Students from two convocation sets … the math will not end at ₦100k per person.”

Following this, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, responded in the comment section to clarify the structure of the award:

“Every award instituted for best graduating students is done for 10 years and it’s for best graduating students each session till 10 years. No student takes for two sessions. Next convocation, the best females will receive the award and it continues.”

This appeared to settle earlier uncertainties until further reactions on social media prompted the Vice Chancellor to comment again—this time quite directly:

“Ujah Amarachi will you stop demarketing Uniport? Which complete money are you talking about?”

Here at Unique Stoary, we appreciate the Vice Chancellor for offering clarity on the 10-year structure of the fund. This explanation was necessary, especially considering the scale of the First Lady’s donation and the initial absence of official communication.

However, clarity in funding models should naturally answer basic numerical questions.

Therefore, Unique Stoary respectfully asks just one simple question:
If each student received ₦100,000, does this mean there were 50 eligible Best Graduating Female Students?
    - If yes — that resolves the matter.
    - If no — then how exactly was the disbursement structure determined, and what formula guided the allocation?

Given that the First Lady’s gesture was intended to encourage and reward academic excellence, beneficiaries and the public should be able to understand how the funds are spread, the number of recipients each year, and the criteria applied.

    Transparency is not antagonism.
    Accountability is not demarketing.
Asking respectful questions strengthens trust, not weakens it.

We remain committed to promoting clarity, fairness, and integrity in reporting matters that affect students and the academic community.

  • A Call For Transparency In The Disbursement Of The ₦50 Million First Lady’s Award To Uniport Best Graduating Female Students.

During the 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt, held on July 24, 2025 two outstanding ladies — Victory Abanjo and Ibitayo Aluko — emerged as joint valedictorians with an exceptional CGPA of 4.89. In recognition of this historic academic feat, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, graciously donated ₦50,000,000 for the benefit of all female Best Graduating Students (BGS) of the 35th Convocation.

However, several developments surrounding the administration of this donation have raised concerns that require clear communication and transparency from the appropriate authorities!

    1. Uneven Disbursement to Beneficiaries.
Reports indicate that while some beneficiaries received payments last week, others have not yet received any communication or credit alert. This raises operational concerns regarding the disbursement schedule and the criteria guiding the release of funds.

    2. The Amount Disbursed Does Not Align with the Total Donation.
It has also been observed that beneficiaries who have received the award were paid ₦100,000 each. Based on available information, the total number of female BGS for the 35th Convocation is far less than 50 students.

Yet, even if we assume 50 students for the sake of calculation:

    * ₦100,000 × 50 students = ₦5,000,000
    * This represents only 10% of the ₦50,000,000 generously donated.

Given the First Lady’s intention to reward academic excellence meaningfully, the current distribution raises important questions about:

    1. The actual number of qualified beneficiaries.
    2. The approved disbursement structure.
    3. The status of the remaining funds, which should logically be allocated to the selected students

If the beneficiaries are fewer than 50, the expectation — based on principles of fairness and the spirit of the donation — is that each recipient should receive a proportionate amount, potentially up to ₦1,000,000 per student.

This matter deserves urgent clarification from the University administration, particularly because the University of Port Harcourt has always prided itself on integrity, excellence, and transparency. Providing a detailed breakdown of:

    * the number of beneficiaries,
    * the criteria used,
    * and the fund utilization structure,

will help maintain public trust and uphold the institution’s reputation.

This is not an attempt to cast aspersions but a respectful call for accountability. The students involved have demonstrated excellence worthy of celebration, and they deserve full clarity regarding benefits publicly announced in their honour.

We trust the University management to offer the necessary explanations and ensure that the First Lady’s gesture achieves its intended impact.

  • Here's How To Start Branding Yourself As A Student.

Many students are walking around campus with vibes, exam stress and indomie energy, but zero personal brand.

Meanwhile, your future employer is somewhere scrolling through LinkedIn like, “Who can I trust with this opportunity?”

And you? You’re posting ‘outside tonight’ and shouting “God when”.

Or are you saying: "I'll cross that bridge when I reach there"

    Toor. Let’s fix it now.

Here are simple ways to start branding yourself, even as a student: no pressure, no ring light, no tripod, nothing.

1️⃣ Pick ONE thing you want to be known for.

Not five. Not seven. Just one.

“Future Pharmacist Pen” (already taken sha )
    “Public Health storyteller”
    “Campus tech guy”
“Makeup artist who saves students’ pockets”

Your brand starts when people can say:
    “That’s the person that does…”

If they can’t complete that sentence, your branding hasn’t started.

2️⃣ Start sharing the SMALL things you already know.

People think branding is dropping TED Talks. No. It’s simply showing what you’re learning.

    Examples:
“What I learned today in Biopharmaceutics…”
“A study tip that helped me survive this week…”
    “A funny mistake I made during practicals…”
“How I improved my makeup game this semester…”

    Consistency beats perfection, every time.

3️⃣ Clean your social media like someone expecting visitors.

Your bio should not look like:
ABSU | Jesus baby | Born to be wild | Small girl big God.”

    Ah ah!

My dear, what should people follow you for?

    Fix it:
✔ Pharmacy student | Future clinical pharmacist
    ✔ Public health advocate
✔ Content creator sharing study, career & lifestyle tips

That’s a brand. Simple and clean.

    4️⃣ Your DP matters.

You can't be shouting “personal brand!” But your profile picture looks like someone hiding from EFCC.

Pick a clear, friendly, confident photo, that’s your first impression, and that's what people trust.

5️⃣ Start showing your growth journey, not perfection.

People don’t fall in love with “experts.” They fall in love with students becoming experts.

    Post things like:
    Your struggles
    Your small wins
    What you learned
What you failed at and corrected
    Behind-the-scenes of your daily grind

That's what builds connection, and connection builds brand loyalty.

6️⃣ Network like someone that wants to leave Nigeria eventually.

Reply comments. Talk to seniors. Engage other creators. Connect with lecturers with sense. Build your circle before you need your circle.

7️⃣ Be consistent even if your procrastination spirit is fighting you.

You don’t need to post daily. Just show up enough for people to trust your presence.

Remember: You are your biggest project.

And people are watching you more than you think.

If you start today, you won’t recognize yourself in 6 months.

Branding isn’t just for influencers. It’s for students who want to stand out.

    Students who want opportunities.
    Students who want visibility.
    Students who want to matter.

And that student can be YOU.

  • Uniport Alumni Spotlight: Meet Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, Governor of Abia State.

From the lecture halls of the University of Port Harcourt to the commanding heights of banking, economic policy, and public leadership — Dr. Alex Chioma Otti has built a career that proves excellence is not an act, but a lifelong commitment.

Studying Economics at the University of Port Harcourt, Dr Otti distinguished himself early, graduating with a First Class Honours degree in 1988. His years at Uniport were marked by an uncommon blend of academic brilliance and leadership: he served first as Treasurer, then President of the Nigerian Economics Students Association (NESA), and even took on the role of News Editor of the Uniport Mirror campus publication. His devotion to academics earned him recognition as the Best Graduating Student in the Department of Economics, the best in the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Overall Best Graduating Student of his year.

Yet, instead of walking the predictable path of academia, Otti envisioned a future shaped by financial intelligence, reforms, and nation-building.

This vision propelled him into Nigeria’s banking sector, where he rose steadily through institutions such as Nigerian International Bank (Citibank), UBA, and subsequently became the Group Managing Director/CEO of Diamond Bank Plc. Under his leadership, Diamond Bank strengthened its global footprint, expanded its customer reach, and implemented modern digital banking systems that contributed to making the institution one of Nigeria’s most innovative banks of its era.

His academic journey didn’t end at Uniport. Otti obtained an MBA from the University of Lagos, followed by executive programs at Columbia Business School, Stanford Business School, Wharton (University of Pennsylvania), and INSEAD, France — training that sharpened his competence and broadened his worldview. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to finance and national development, the University of Port Harcourt awarded him an honorary Doctor of Science degree in 2012.

But Dr Otti’s greatest pivot came when he stepped into the political arena — choosing service over comfort. Guided by a desire to rebuild institutions and restore the dignity of governance, he contested and won the office of Governor of Abia State in 2023, where he continues to champion reforms grounded in transparency, fiscal discipline, and people-centered development.

His leadership today bears the imprint of his Uniport years: intellectual curiosity, discipline, courage, and a commitment to excellence.

Beyond public office, Dr. Otti is known for his mentorship, philanthropy, and investment in human capital. His work continues to inspire young Nigerians to believe that with integrity, competence, and resilience, they too can shape the future.

Today, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti stands tall as one of Uniport’s most distinguished alumni — a reminder that education is not just a qualification, but a launchpad for nation-building, innovation, and transformational leadership.

Uniport Alumni Spotlight: Meet Dr. Your degree isn’t just a certificate. It’s a platform to lead, to innovate, and to impact generations. 📌 If you know any Uniport Alumni doing exploits, do well to mention them in the comment section and we might just shine the spotlight on them. _____________________________________________ We have a WhatsApp channel.
