The Students’ Union Government (SUG), University of Port Harcourt, has announced the suspension of all sporting activities across faculties and departments in view of the ongoing examination period. EDITORIAL: Uniport This Week — SUG Week, Sports, Music, Politics & Entertainment. Last Thursday and Friday, Uniport came alive with the Spotify Campus Drop, a two-day experience combining music, creativity, workshops, conversations and live performances. Day One, “No Data, No Wahala,” introduced students to Spotify Premium’s offline listening experience, while Day Two, “Fresh Finds on Campus,” featured workshops, artist conversations and live performances. Unique Stoary collaborated with Spotify and was on ground throughout the two days, capturing the energy and memorable moments from the experience. Now, a new week begins with even more happening across campus. At the centre of the week is SUG Week ’26, themed “Liberation.” The celebration officially began on Sunday with Praise Night, bringing students together for worship, music and celebration. With more activities lined up, SUG Week is set to provide students with opportunities to connect, unwind and create memorable experiences beyond the classroom. Tuesday is a big day for football lovers. The Uniport Stadium will host the Uniport Freshers’ Cup Final, with BMS taking on SSLT at 10:00 AM. Later in the day, Portugal (Engineering) will face Mexico (Agric) at 2:00 PM in another highly anticipated final. Two finals, one stadium and plenty at stake. Meanwhile, the SUG political season has entered a new phase. The campaign period for students who indicated interest in contesting for elective positions has officially ended. After weeks of campaigns, promises and engagements across campus, attention now shifts to the next stage of the electoral process. With campaigning over, students have an opportunity to reflect on the candidates, their ideas and records, and the kind of leadership they want. Beyond posters and campaign slogans, the focus should remain on representation, accountability and effective service to the student community. And when the week winds down, MC Olaks Friday Night Laughs is set to bring comedy and entertainment to campus. The event holds at Unique Luxury Hotel and Suites by 6:00 PM, offering students the opportunity to relax, laugh and round off an eventful week. From SUG Week and football finals to music, student politics and comedy, Uniport has plenty happening this week. University life goes beyond lectures and examinations; it is also about the experiences, conversations, competitions and memories created along the way. Uniport This Week: Exams, Spotify, Sports and Opportunities on Campus. The University of Port Harcourt is entering another busy stretch of the semester, with academic preparations, major entertainment events and sporting opportunities all taking centre stage. First, the much-anticipated GES examination timetable is out. The examinations are scheduled to commence on Monday, August 31, 2026. Students are encouraged to obtain the timetable, confirm their examination dates and venues, and begin preparing early. With the semester moving quickly, last-minute preparation may not be the best strategy. Away from academics, music lovers have something major to look forward to this week as Spotify Campus Drop comes to Uniport on Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14. Spotify, in partnership with The Orchard, will host Fresh Finds on Campus, celebrating emerging Nigerian talent through music, creativity, learning and live performances. The programme will feature Taves, Evado, Fimi, Amaeya, Kemuel, Ema Onigah, Swayvee and Braye. Activities will take place at the Old Convocation Arena, with sessions at the Law Faculty Auditorium on Friday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM before activities move to the Old Convocation Arena from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Admission is free. Meanwhile, Uniport's sporting community is also heating up. Voting is ongoing for the Uniport Sports Awards, including categories such as Uniport D'Or and Best Department Director of Sports. Students are encouraged to participate and recognise those making an impact in campus sports. There is also a fresh opportunity for students interested in rugby. The University of Port Harcourt has opened rugby trials ahead of the NUGA Games. Students from all departments and faculties who are willing to represent the University at state and national levels are invited to attend training every Saturday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the University of Port Harcourt Field opposite UBA Bank. EDITORIAL: Beyond the Dissolution—What Happens to Students' Democracy and Campus Life at Uniport? The University of Port Harcourt community on Sunday, 19th July 2026, were stunned by one of the most consequential administrative decisions in recent student union history: the immediate dissolution of the Students' Union Government (SUG), Hall Representatives, and all other Students' Union activities. The University's position is clear. Through a memorandum signed by the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the directive of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike, the administration has ordered the immediate handover of all union property and directed elected officials to appear before an investigative panel to account for their stewardship. Equally swift was the response from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, rejected the dissolution, arguing that while allegations of misconduct should be investigated, elected student leaders deserve due process, transparency, and fair hearing. In a separate statement, NANS National Director of Special Duties, Comrade Levi Sam Okuru, described the action as excessive and called for dialogue instead of outright dissolution. The opposing positions have already ignited debates across campus and beyond. However, beyond the legal and administrative arguments lies a more immediate question that concerns every student: What happens next? The Students' Union Government is more than an executive council. It is the coordinating body behind many of the activities that shape campus life. Its dissolution leaves uncertainty around several ongoing and upcoming programmes that students have anticipated for months. Questions are already being asked about the fate of the Fresher's Cup, VC's Cup, and the Uniport D'Or Awards, coordinated by the SUG Director of Sports, Comrade Bolarinwa David Olaniyi (Holla). Will these events continue under university supervision, be postponed indefinitely, or be cancelled altogether? There is also uncertainty surrounding Play Fest, an initiative championed by the In-House Senate Chairman on Socials, Senator Otto Joshua, as well as the Functional Students Campaign 2026, a drug awareness programme organized by the Directorate of Students with Special Needs and hosted by Senator Henry Ikechukwu in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Rivers State Command. The campaign is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, 29th July 2026, at the Faculty of Education Auditorium. Last week, as part of our Father's Day Special, the Unique Stoary team reached out to fathers across different homes and backgrounds. Today marks the commencement of the Free Transport Initiative organized by the Uniport SUG Senate to commemorate its 10th Legislative Summit & Anniversary. On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, by 10am attention shifts to the Faculty of Law Auditorium for the 10th Legislative Summit and Anniversary. As the Student Senate celebrates a decade of leadership and impact, the summit provides an opportunity to reflect on governance, representation, and the future of student leadership. The week continues on Friday June 26, 2026 by 10am at the Old Convocation Arena with the highly anticipated Cook-a-thon organized by the SUG Chief Judge Hon. Justice Dimkpa Noble Ka-Alenebari Lah. Beyond culinary competition, the initiative promises to showcase talent, foster interaction, and celebrate the diversity that makes our campus unique. Also on Friday, laughter takes center stage as MC Olaks hosts another edition of Friday Night Laughs at Unique Luxury Hotel by 6:00pm, offering students and residents an opportunity to unwind and enjoy quality entertainment for free.
