EDITORIAL: Uniport This Week — SUG Week, Sports, Music, Politics & Entertainment. Last Thursday and Friday, Uniport came alive with the Spotify Campus Drop, a two-day experience combining music, creativity, workshops, conversations and live performances. Day One, “No Data, No Wahala,” introduced students to Spotify Premium’s offline listening experience, while Day Two, “Fresh Finds on Campus,” featured workshops, artist conversations and live performances. Unique Stoary collaborated with Spotify and was on ground throughout the two days, capturing the energy and memorable moments from the experience. Now, a new week begins with even more happening across campus. At the centre of the week is SUG Week ’26, themed “Liberation.” The celebration officially began on Sunday with Praise Night, bringing students together for worship, music and celebration. With more activities lined up, SUG Week is set to provide students with opportunities to connect, unwind and create memorable experiences beyond the classroom. Tuesday is a big day for football lovers. The Uniport Stadium will host the Uniport Freshers’ Cup Final, with BMS taking on SSLT at 10:00 AM. Later in the day, Portugal (Engineering) will face Mexico (Agric) at 2:00 PM in another highly anticipated final. Two finals, one stadium and plenty at stake. Meanwhile, the SUG political season has entered a new phase. The campaign period for students who indicated interest in contesting for elective positions has officially ended. After weeks of campaigns, promises and engagements across campus, attention now shifts to the next stage of the electoral process. With campaigning over, students have an opportunity to reflect on the candidates, their ideas and records, and the kind of leadership they want. Beyond posters and campaign slogans, the focus should remain on representation, accountability and effective service to the student community. And when the week winds down, MC Olaks Friday Night Laughs is set to bring comedy and entertainment to campus. The event holds at Unique Luxury Hotel and Suites by 6:00 PM, offering students the opportunity to relax, laugh and round off an eventful week. From SUG Week and football finals to music, student politics and comedy, Uniport has plenty happening this week. University life goes beyond lectures and examinations; it is also about the experiences, conversations, competitions and memories created along the way. As always, Unique Stoary will remain close to the action, bringing you the people, events and conversations shaping student life. Stay informed. Stay connected. Stay Uniport. BOLD Conversations | Episode 27 Topic: Has Student Unionism Lost Its Voice? From vibrant history-making movements that once held leadership accountable to quieter, administrative-driven student politics, campus advocacy in Nigeria has undergone a massive shift. Historically, student unions were the bold frontlines for justice, student welfare, and social reform. Today, many students feel a growing disconnect between the executives representing them and the daily struggles on ground—ranging from rising fees and infrastructure challenges to safety and academic policies. This evolution raises intense debate across Nigerian campuses. One side argues that student unionism hasn't died, but simply matured into modern diplomacy—prioritizing peaceful negotiation, policy dialogue, and constructive engagement over protests and shutdowns. The other side insists that student unionism has lost its true purpose, becoming a stepping stone for personal political ambitions, compromised by institutional pressures, and silent when student voices need to be heard the most. Are today’s student unions strategic diplomats adapting to modern realities, or have they lost the courage and Independence needed to fight for student welfare? Tonight, in this episode, we talk openly about the state of student unionism—its history, its present realities, and what it takes to rebuild genuine, courageous student advocacy. 🗓 Today Wednesday, July 29, 2026 | 7 PM 📍 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@uniquestoary Tonight, in this 27th episode of BOLD Conversations, we skip the surface-level politics and address the real state of student representation in our institutions. Uniport SUG Crisis Deepens as Senate Orders Probe Into SUG President, Removes Director of Socials. Fresh tension has erupted within the University of Port Harcourt Students’ Union Government (SUG) following a high-stakes plenary session of the 10th Students’ Representative Council (Senate), chaired by Senate President, Dist. Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma. The plenary, held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, addressed issues bordering on constitutional compliance, administrative accountability and financial stewardship within the Union. According to the official resolutions released after the sitting, the Senate announced the removal of the Director of Socials, Comrade Tamunokuro Anga Lawrence, following findings presented by an investigative panel set up by the Senate. The committee reportedly found alleged evidence of administrative and financial lapses and further accused the suspended Director of continuing to parade himself publicly as Director of Socials despite an existing Senate suspension and resolution. The report also alleged that he proceeded to organize unapproved activities and events while still under suspension. In addition, the Senate stated that Comr. Tamunokuro Lawrence failed to honour Senate summons, with the committee reportedly describing his notice of absence as “short, watery and frivolous.” Following deliberations, Senator Omanoye Victory moved a motion for his permanent removal, which was seconded by Senator James Erhuwuwu. The motion was subsequently adopted through a majority voice vote. The Senate thereafter called on the Chief Justice to affirm and swear in the in-house Chairman on Socials, Senator Otto Joshua, as the new Director of Socials. The plenary also shifted attention to concerns surrounding financial stewardship within the SUG leadership. According to the Senate, notices had earlier been sent to the Presidency, the Treasurer, the Financial Secretary and the Director of Transport. The Senate disclosed that: • The President sent a notice of absence alongside a request for one-week grace to appear before the Senate. • The Treasurer and Financial Secretary appeared before the Senate and were interrogated during the sitting. • The Director of Transport reportedly failed to honour the Senate’s invitation. Following deliberations and interrogation of available officials, the Senate stated that allegations bordering on presidential financial irregularities and breaches of constitutional provisions emerged. Consequently, the Senate leadership announced the constitution of a five-man investigative committee to probe the Executive President Senator Amaechi Tamunotonye Walson and report its findings and recommendations back to the Senate. Speaking during the plenary, Senate President Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma reportedly charged Senators to remain firm in defending constitutional order and insisted that the Senate under his leadership would not be influenced externally. The Senate also explained that the plenary was moved online due to security concerns, low turnout and the presence of unidentified persons around the physical venue. The unfolding developments have since sparked widespread reactions across the Uniport student community, with many students closely monitoring what could become one of the most consequential political moments within the current SUG administration. 📌 Join the Unique Stoary Community on Telegram let's have real time discussions on latest happenings and matters arising in Uniport.
