The Students' Union Government (SUG), University of Port Harcourt, through the Office of the Director of Information, has released an official notice regarding hostel accommodation applications.


In a statement issued today, Wednesday, September 9, 2026 signed by the SUG Director of Information, Comrade Ogwunte Godswill Jonathan, the union notified the student body that the submission of applications for hostel accommodation has officially closed.


Students who successfully submitted their applications prior to the deadline are advised to remain calm and await updates regarding processing and allocation. Further directives on space allocation will be communicated in due course.

Uniport SUG Director of Students with Special Needs, Comrade Omaka David Ikechukwu Begins Data Mapping For Students With Special Needs.


The Student Union Government, through the Office of the Director of Students with Special Needs, has commenced a comprehensive data-mapping exercise to identify students with disabilities and special needs across all faculties of the University of Port Harcourt.


The initiative is aimed at strengthening advocacy and facilitating targeted support, including academic concessions, examination logistics, healthcare access, hostel allocations and improved physical accessibility.


Students are encouraged to provide accurate information through their respective departmental and faculty representatives. Submission closes Monday, October 12, 2026, at 4:00PM.

Uniport Governing Council Task Force Meets Vice Chancellor on Revenue, Assets and Investments.


The Governing Council Task Force on Revenue Review, Illegal Structures, Business Concerns and University Investment Reorganisation has met with the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Chike Princewill, to review progress on its mandate and clarify key areas of its assignment.


The meeting focused on strengthening the University’s revenue systems, particularly the Single Portal administration policy, digitalising bed-space allocation and payment, and improving information management, transparency and accountability.


The Committee also discussed the enumeration and marking of illegal structures on University property, as well as the reorganisation of the University’s business concerns and investments to improve efficiency, sustainability and returns.


Responding, Prof. Princewill commended the Committee for its work and stressed the need for accurate data, proper documentation and practical solutions that protect the University’s interests.


He further directed that the exercise on illegal structures be systematic and properly documented, while urging the Committee to remain focused on its mandate and ensure that its recommendations are sustainable and beneficial to the University.


The Task Force, chaired by Chief Hon. Kadilo Kabari, was established by the Senator Mao Ohuabunwa-led Governing Council to review the University’s revenue systems, address issues concerning illegal structures and business concerns, and reorganise Uniport Investments Limited for greater efficiency and sustainability.


The assignment falls within the Council’s statutory responsibilities under Section 6(1) of the University of Port Harcourt Act, particularly regarding the University’s finances, property and policies.

Uniport SUG Announces New Format for VC Cup 2026.


The Students’ Union Government (SUG), University of Port Harcourt, through the Office of the Director of Sports, has announced a major update to the format of the upcoming VC Cup competition.


According to a statement signed by the SUG Director of Sports, Comr. Bolarinwa David Holla, the tournament will now adopt a “Country Version” format. Under the new arrangement, each faculty participating in the competition will represent a designated country throughout the tournament.


The statement also revealed that faculties will be required to compete using the kits of the countries they represent. The move, according to the Sports Directorate, is aimed at promoting uniformity and enhancing the spirit of the competition.


In another significant change, the VC Cup will now be played in a league format. Faculties will compete against one another, with points awarded based on match results to determine the final standings and eventual winner.


Faculty Sports Directors have been advised to liaise with the Office of the Director of Sports regarding country allocation and other logistics ahead of the competition.


Further details on fixtures, dates and venues are expected to be released in the coming days.

Uniport Opens 2026/2027 Post-UTME Registration — Minimum Score: 160.


The University of Port Harcourt has announced the commencement of registration for the 2026/2027 Post-UTME Screening Exercise.


Candidates who chose Uniport as their First Choice institution in the 2026 UTME and obtained a minimum score of 160 are eligible to apply.


Registration starts on Friday, 15th May, 2026 and closes on Friday, 29th May, 2026.


Registration Procedure;


* Visit the University website at www.uniport.edu.ng and strictly adhere to the registration procedure.
* Eligible candidates are to input their UTME Registration Number and confirm pre-loaded UTME details.
* Generate Remita Code for online payment with ATM Card, OR print out Payment Slip and proceed to any bank with Remita Platform for payment of ₦2,000 only.
* Obtain a Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) Code from the bank teller confirming payment.
* Proceed online again and log in with your UTME Registration Number and the Access Code to confirm payment.
* Complete the Form online as requested.
* Click the “Submit” button and print Registration Slip for the Screening Exercise.


Important Information;


* Candidates must be sixteen (16) years of age or above by September 30, 2026 to be eligible for admission.
* Mobile phones, iPads, iPods, Walkman, and similar gadgets or any extraneous materials will not be allowed into the screening venue and its environs.
* Candidates must apply within the registration period, as the online link for the application form will be disabled at MIDNIGHT on Friday, 29th May, 2026.

EDITORIAL: Clarity at Last—But Questions Remain on the ₦50 Million First Lady’s Award.

In recent days, the University of Port Harcourt community has witnessed renewed conversations surrounding the ₦50,000,000 donation made by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to support Best Graduating Female Students during the 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony.

This discussion gained momentum following our earlier publication titled:
“A Call For Transparency In The Disbursement Of The ₦50 Million First Lady’s Award To Uniport Best Graduating Female Students.”

Our concerns focused on three key issues:

1. Uneven communication to beneficiaries.
2. The disbursement of only ₦100,000 per student, which mathematically represents only 10% of the total donation even if 50 beneficiaries existed.
3. The absence of an official explanation regarding how the ₦50 million would be administered.

Shortly afterwards, a Best Graduating Female Student from the Department of Geology, Ujah Amarachi, shared her personal experience on LinkedIn. Her post read:

“Uniport has finally given me my cash prize for being a Best Graduating Female Student and I'm so happy.💃💃 … I finally received the money💃💃💃 I was paid 100K guys.”

She appreciated the First Lady and added:

“But wait oh!! I just want to ask a question.

1. Do I keep receiving 100k for 10 year.
2. Or this is a one time payment👀
You won't blame me for asking. The money given was 50Million naira. Not five but fifty😳 … Let’s be clear: I am grateful. But we all know that if ₦50 million is shared only among Best Graduating Female Students from two convocation sets … the math will not end at ₦100k per person.”

Following this, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, responded in the comment section to clarify the structure of the award:

“Every award instituted for best graduating students is done for 10 years and it’s for best graduating students each session till 10 years. No student takes for two sessions. Next convocation, the best females will receive the award and it continues.”

This appeared to settle earlier uncertainties until further reactions on social media prompted the Vice Chancellor to comment again—this time quite directly:

“Ujah Amarachi will you stop demarketing Uniport? Which complete money are you talking about?”



Here at Unique Stoary, we appreciate the Vice Chancellor for offering clarity on the 10-year structure of the fund. This explanation was necessary, especially considering the scale of the First Lady’s donation and the initial absence of official communication.

However, clarity in funding models should naturally answer basic numerical questions.

Therefore, Unique Stoary respectfully asks just one simple question:
If each student received ₦100,000, does this mean there were 50 eligible Best Graduating Female Students?
- If yes — that resolves the matter.
- If no — then how exactly was the disbursement structure determined, and what formula guided the allocation?

Given that the First Lady’s gesture was intended to encourage and reward academic excellence, beneficiaries and the public should be able to understand how the funds are spread, the number of recipients each year, and the criteria applied.

Transparency is not antagonism.
Accountability is not demarketing.
Asking respectful questions strengthens trust, not weakens it.

NYSC DG Commends Gov Mbah for Raising Corps Members’ Allowances to N20,000 Minimum

...Medical Corps members now earn N40,000 to N80,000

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has commended Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State for his commitment to the welfare and safety of corps members in the state, especially for increasing their monthly allowances to a minimum of N20,000.

The DG gave the commendation when he led top members of NYSC’s management on a courtesy visit to the governor’s office, Monday evening, on the sidelines of his tour of the NYSC Orientation Camp at Awgu, as well as others across the country during the orientation programme.

Before Mbah’s administration, NYSC corps members in the state earned a N1,000 monthly allowance, but the governor, upon learning about the situation, approved a minimum allowance of N80,000 for medical doctors, N50,000 for pharmacists, and N40,000 for other healthcare professionals, which they are already earning.

He equally approved a N20,000 minimum allowance for others, in addition to the allowance paid by the Federal Government.

Gen. Nafiu also commended the governor for the peace and security enjoyed by corps members in the state, noting that his visit was part of his tour of orientation camps across the country during the ongoing orientation programme for newly mobilised corps members.

He assured parents of the safety of their young ones, noting that despite a few security issues involving corps members in some parts of the country, the safety of corps members had been commendable and guaranteed.

“The NYSC does not deploy corps members to areas that are not secure. Security of lives and property is very dear to us. Parents are always reassured that we do not deploy these young, vibrant Nigerian youths, who are the hope of this great nation, to places we are not sure of the security of their lives and property,” he said.

He reiterated that NYSC remains a nonpartisan organisation, stressing also the need for good behaviour among corps members, as the corps would not lower its standards for anybody.

“I charge Nigerians to understand us; see us as nonpartisan; see us as Nigerians that are passionate about the development and aspirations of these young Nigerians that are committed to us. It is something that is really sacred to us,” he concluded.

On his part, Governor Peter Mbah pledged the continued support of his administration for the NYSC and corps members serving in the state.

While recalling the place of Enugu State in the Corps’ history, including the Corps’ first orientation camp, which was established in Awgu in 1973, the governor said his administration had taken steps towards the infrastructural revamp of the NYSC camp in the state.

“Awgu is also quite symbolic for us too as a people because, if you recall, that was actually a centre where we talked about the concept of Reconciliation, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction – 3 Rs – immediately after the civil war.

“So, for us, in trying to rehabilitate that location now, we want to bring back that historic importance. We have also done quite a number of interventions for the NYSC, which you have pointed out. We are going to continue to support the service.

“We see it as a duty on our part to continue to support both the welfare and the safety of the corps members. We believe that the safety of the corps members at all times is paramount to us,” he stated.

He thanked the corps for its many contributions to Enugu State’s and the nation’s development, noting that NYSC had served as an enduring bridge that links young Nigerians across culture, across faith, across regions and, indeed, as a channel to deepen their love for fatherland.

“We derive benefit from the NYSC – the intervention we get from the corps members, who go to our schools to teach, our hospitals to work, and even contribute to our water, sanitation and hygiene programmes in our rural communities. Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUTTH), Parklane Hospital is a state tertiary health institution owned and operated by the Enugu State government. It transformed from a nursing home established in 1930 for the colonial master to a first-class hospital for government officials and the elite in 1952. During the Nigerian civil war that lasted from 1967 to 1970, it was converted to a general hospital which served the purpose of treating the victims of war. The hospital gradually and progressively expanded to accommodate the establishment of Maternity, Paediatric and Surgery facilities in 1985. The hospital was upgraded in November 2005, to a specialist institution and later to a Teaching Hospital by May 2006.

Requirements

Candidate must possess a Degree or its equivalent in Pharmacy from a recognized tertiary institution and evidence of registration by relevant registration council in Nigeria.
