EDITORIAL: Uniport This Week — SUG Week, Sports, Music, Politics & Entertainment. Last Thursday and Friday, Uniport came alive with the Spotify Campus Drop, a two-day experience combining music, creativity, workshops, conversations and live performances. Day One, “No Data, No Wahala,” introduced students to Spotify Premium’s offline listening experience, while Day Two, “Fresh Finds on Campus,” featured workshops, artist conversations and live performances. Unique Stoary collaborated with Spotify and was on ground throughout the two days, capturing the energy and memorable moments from the experience. Now, a new week begins with even more happening across campus. At the centre of the week is SUG Week ’26, themed “Liberation.” The celebration officially began on Sunday with Praise Night, bringing students together for worship, music and celebration. With more activities lined up, SUG Week is set to provide students with opportunities to connect, unwind and create memorable experiences beyond the classroom. Tuesday is a big day for football lovers. The Uniport Stadium will host the Uniport Freshers’ Cup Final, with BMS taking on SSLT at 10:00 AM. Later in the day, Portugal (Engineering) will face Mexico (Agric) at 2:00 PM in another highly anticipated final. Two finals, one stadium and plenty at stake. Meanwhile, the SUG political season has entered a new phase. The campaign period for students who indicated interest in contesting for elective positions has officially ended. After weeks of campaigns, promises and engagements across campus, attention now shifts to the next stage of the electoral process. With campaigning over, students have an opportunity to reflect on the candidates, their ideas and records, and the kind of leadership they want. Beyond posters and campaign slogans, the focus should remain on representation, accountability and effective service to the student community. And when the week winds down, MC Olaks Friday Night Laughs is set to bring comedy and entertainment to campus. The event holds at Unique Luxury Hotel and Suites by 6:00 PM, offering students the opportunity to relax, laugh and round off an eventful week. From SUG Week and football finals to music, student politics and comedy, Uniport has plenty happening this week. University life goes beyond lectures and examinations; it is also about the experiences, conversations, competitions and memories created along the way. Uniport This Week: Exams, Spotify, Sports and Opportunities on Campus. The University of Port Harcourt is entering another busy stretch of the semester, with academic preparations, major entertainment events and sporting opportunities all taking centre stage. First, the much-anticipated GES examination timetable is out. The examinations are scheduled to commence on Monday, August 31, 2026. Students are encouraged to obtain the timetable, confirm their examination dates and venues, and begin preparing early. With the semester moving quickly, last-minute preparation may not be the best strategy. Away from academics, music lovers have something major to look forward to this week as Spotify Campus Drop comes to Uniport on Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14. Spotify, in partnership with The Orchard, will host Fresh Finds on Campus, celebrating emerging Nigerian talent through music, creativity, learning and live performances. The programme will feature Taves, Evado, Fimi, Amaeya, Kemuel, Ema Onigah, Swayvee and Braye. Activities will take place at the Old Convocation Arena, with sessions at the Law Faculty Auditorium on Friday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM before activities move to the Old Convocation Arena from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Admission is free. Meanwhile, Uniport's sporting community is also heating up. Voting is ongoing for the Uniport Sports Awards, including categories such as Uniport D'Or and Best Department Director of Sports. Students are encouraged to participate and recognise those making an impact in campus sports. There is also a fresh opportunity for students interested in rugby. The University of Port Harcourt has opened rugby trials ahead of the NUGA Games. Students from all departments and faculties who are willing to represent the University at state and national levels are invited to attend training every Saturday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the University of Port Harcourt Field opposite UBA Bank. DAY 4 | Vice Chancellor Close-Out Ceremony | Legacy Tour Rain couldn't stop the legacy. Despite the rain, Day 4 of the Vice Chancellor's Close-Out Ceremony went on as planned with the Legacy Tour, showcasing some of the landmark projects executed during the five-year administration of the 9th Substantive Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill. The tour featured visits to the Julirose Hotels and Suites, the 10.78MW Solar Farm, Department of Philosophy Building, Unique Luxury Hotel and Suites, ACE PUTOR, the revamped Uniport Bottling Plant, the Works and Services Building, NIMASA House (Centre for Logistics and Transport Studies) and other key infrastructure that have become part of the University's growth story. The weather may have changed the atmosphere, but it couldn't dampen the significance of the journey—a walk through projects that reflect years of vision, innovation, and development. Why the 216th Inaugural Lecture Changed My Perspective on Motherhood. I had the privilege of attending the 216th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Port Harcourt, and I must say it was an experience that left a lasting impression on me. Before the lecture began, there was a free medical outreach where attendees had their vital signs checked. It was encouraging to see the organizers prioritize the health and wellbeing of everyone present. We were also served refreshments, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere before the commencement of the event. The lecture started promptly at 3:00pm and was delivered by Prof. Rosemary Ogu on the theme, "Sweet Mother: From Perils to Power." Throughout the lecture, she highlighted the realities of motherhood and the many challenges women encounter before, during, and after childbirth. Drawing from her vast experience as a gynecologist, Prof. Ogu shared real-life experiences from her years of medical practice. Some of the stories were emotional and deeply moving, revealing the sacrifices mothers make and the harsh realities faced by women who experience pregnancy complications or even lose their lives while giving birth. Beyond the medical perspective, her message was one of hope and resilience. She encouraged women to remain strong, never give up despite the challenges they face, and ensure that their voices continue to be heard in conversations about maternal health and wellbeing. The lecture was formally brought to a close by the Vice-Chancellor, who commended Prof. Ogu for her insightful presentation and urged everyone in attendance to reflect on the important lessons shared. Overall, attending the lecture gave me a deeper appreciation for mothers and a better understanding of the strength, courage, and sacrifices involved in bringing life into the world. It was an eye-opening and truly worthwhile experience that I believe every student would have benefited from.
