  • EDITORIAL | The Week That Was: Academic Milestones, Campus Developments And Growing Creativity.

It was another eventful week at the University of Port Harcourt, with developments spanning academic excellence, university governance, student engagement and entertainment.

The University Governing Council approved the promotion of 96 academic staff, including 53 Professors and 43 Readers. The Senator Mao Ohuabunwa-led Council also toured university facilities, including the Senate Building and Choba Campus, to assess infrastructure and operations.

Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria brought its 25th Anniversary and Customer Service Week celebration to campus, engaging students with connectivity offers, freebies and exciting activities. The week also featured the October edition of SABI COMEDY CLUB with MC Olaks, bringing laughter and entertainment to the community as the headline act Destalker alongside others delivered humour with mastery.

Beyond capturing these moments, Unique Stoary is investing in its people. Our volunteers alongside those from RSU Stoary are undergoing a series of training sessions under the October Edition of our Capacity Building Sessions, covering hosting, project management, videography and photography, writing and editing. Guided by the theme “UNSCRIPTED: Developing the Instinct, Creativity & Confidence to Own Every Moment,” we are strengthening the skills needed to tell better stoaries and create greater impact.

As we begin another week, we remain committed to documenting campus life, celebrating achievements and building a stronger community through stoaries that matter.

  • EDITORIAL: The Stories That Shaped Uniport This Previous Week.

The suspension of the indefinite ASUU strike has brought relief to students, with Management rescheduling the affected Second Semester Examinations and providing a clearer path towards completing the academic session.

Meanwhile, institutional advancement remains in focus as NITDA and iDICE move towards establishing a Technical and Robotic Centre of Excellence at Uniport. An Access Bank delegation also visited University Management to strengthen existing partnerships.

Student governance recorded notable developments, including SUG appointments, directives to Faculty Senators-elect, restrictions on private electric keke trips, and judicial decisions affecting scheduled congresses and the inauguration of Faculty Executives-elect.

Beyond administration, the Uniport community celebrated birthdays, leadership milestones, student achievements, and entertainment. We extend warm birthday wishes to Prof. Udeme Georgewill, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies; Dr. Lekpa David, Associate Professor of Anatomy; the 10th SUG Senate President and Chairman of RIVSILF; and the SUG President, Hon. Justice Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike.

Other highlights included the birthday edition of The Roast of MC Olaks, the SUG President’s attendance at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku inauguration, and the successful sign-out of Unique Stoary’s Volunteer Project Manager, Ebitimi Preye.

On the sports front, the scheduled football match, tagged Last Dance, has been postponed due to rainfall and the resulting stadium conditions. A new date will be communicated.

As academic activities continue and examinations enter their final week, we encourage students to remain focused, stay informed, and support one another. We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to everyone who has successfully signed out, marking the completion of an important chapter in their academic journey, and to those signing out this week. May this milestone open doors to new opportunities, meaningful growth, and greater achievements. Keep making your story count!

The Student Union Government of the University of Port Harcourt, under the leadership of the SUG President, Comrade Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike, brings to the attention of the student body the outcome of the actions taken following the incident that occurred on Wednesday at the University Sports Institute involving a student and a staff member identified as Coach Fidelis.

Immediately after the incident occurred, the Student Union Government took decisive action and did not relent in seeking justice for the affected student. • EDITORIAL: Beyond the Dissolution—What Happens to Students' Democracy and Campus Life at Uniport?

The University of Port Harcourt community on Sunday, 19th July 2026, were stunned by one of the most consequential administrative decisions in recent student union history: the immediate dissolution of the Students' Union Government (SUG), Hall Representatives, and all other Students' Union activities.

The University's position is clear. Through a memorandum signed by the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the directive of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike, the administration has ordered the immediate handover of all union property and directed elected officials to appear before an investigative panel to account for their stewardship.

Equally swift was the response from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, rejected the dissolution, arguing that while allegations of misconduct should be investigated, elected student leaders deserve due process, transparency, and fair hearing. In a separate statement, NANS National Director of Special Duties, Comrade Levi Sam Okuru, described the action as excessive and called for dialogue instead of outright dissolution.

The opposing positions have already ignited debates across campus and beyond.

However, beyond the legal and administrative arguments lies a more immediate question that concerns every student:

    What happens next?

The Students' Union Government is more than an executive council. It is the coordinating body behind many of the activities that shape campus life. Its dissolution leaves uncertainty around several ongoing and upcoming programmes that students have anticipated for months.

Questions are already being asked about the fate of the Fresher's Cup, VC's Cup, and the Uniport D'Or Awards, coordinated by the SUG Director of Sports, Comrade Bolarinwa David Olaniyi (Holla). Will these events continue under university supervision, be postponed indefinitely, or be cancelled altogether?

There is also uncertainty surrounding Play Fest, an initiative championed by the In-House Senate Chairman on Socials, Senator Otto Joshua, as well as the Functional Students Campaign 2026, a drug awareness programme organized by the Directorate of Students with Special Needs and hosted by Senator Henry Ikechukwu in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Rivers State Command. The campaign is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, 29th July 2026, at the Faculty of Education Auditorium. With the dissolution now in effect, students are left wondering whether this programme and similar initiatives will proceed as planned.

    CALL FOR CONGRESS

I bring you solidarity greetings in the spirit of Aluta. I can feel the pulse of the Union and I hear clamours of distrust and dissatisfaction growing among us. I have no intention of keeping the student community in the dark. Managing the Union and balancing academics has indeed been a tremendous task. No reason would be convenient enough to excuse this lacuna.

It is on this premise that I have decided to call for a University wide congress. The purpose of this congress is to give a full account of stewardship directly to the students community and for the congress to approve key decisions in line with the provisions of the constitution.

    The details of the congress are as follows;

    Date: 20th July, 2026.
    Time: 3pm
Venue: 7 in 1 TETFund Auditorium

We will do our best to finalize all preparations to ensure the smooth organization of the congress. I hereby constitute a joint committee comprising the Senate President, Chief Judge, All Faculty Presidents and Hostel leaders to champion the process of seeing to the actualization of the congress. I will chair the committee. We will meet in due course to chart the way forward to the success of the exercise. I urge all members of the Union to remain calm and support us in ensuring a peaceful and united Union.

    STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT
    UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT

    THE SENATE

The attention of the Senate has been drawn to some of the anomalies going on which are:

    1. The impersonation of the Senate leadership masterminded by Sen. Uranta who have taken a route that is highly unconstitutional and insults the entirety of the legislative arm.

    2. That Sen. Uranta has for in the last 24hrs been parading himself as an acting Senate President, which is an aberration.

    3. That the leadership of the Senate have undertaken a series of memos awash the media stating that the Executive President Comr. Tonye Olaziba has dissolved a Judiciary Council approved by the Senate without stating formally what led to the dissolution.

Going by the aforementioned observations, the Senate states unequivocally that:

    1. That Sen. Uranta is acting on his own and in the isolation of the Senate led by Sen. Ayabaye Bestman.

    2. That the general public and the students community disregards forthwith any publication by any quarter acting on behalf of the Senate.

    3. That we want to state clearly that the Senate has not received any letter stating that the Executive President has dissolved the Council through the Clerk.

That the Senate has not received any letter stating that the Executive President has dissolved the Council through the Clerk. Any dissolution is nullity and that as of the time of this publication, the only recognized Judiciary Council is that led by Comr. Alasia Ralph Ibim as the Chairman.
