The 205th Inaugural Lecture Series of the University of Port Harcourt featured an intellectually stimulating presentation by Prof. Udeme Owunari Georgewill, who spoke extensively on drug repurposing for the treatment of diseases. In her lecture, Prof. Georgewill emphasized that drug repurposing significantly reduces development timelines and financial risks associated with conventional drug discovery. She described the concept as “old wine in new wineskins,” noting that re-evaluating existing drugs for new therapeutic uses encourages evidence-based, equitable, and transformative innovation. According to her, old drugs previously used for known illnesses can be re-examined and applied to treat other diseases, opening new frontiers in medical research. She further stated that effective drug repurposing will require new frameworks, new combinations, new applications, and renewed policy commitments.
