EDITORIAL: Beyond Resumption, The Questions Of Access, Accountability And Opportunity. As the University of Port Harcourt resumes academic activities today, November 2, 2026 a new month begins with fresh expectations and important questions about the university experience. The release of the second list of shortlisted students for the 2026/2027 hostel accommodation exercise is welcome news, but access to accommodation must go hand in hand with transparency. The SUG’s demand for a review of the physical allocation process and implementation of the approved online system raises an important question: can every eligible student access university facilities without favouritism or unnecessary barriers? Meanwhile, the Unified Portal System (UPS) provides a central platform for school fee payments and designated student services. Students should familiarise themselves with the system and ensure their academic details are correctly verified. The recent General Congress of the Graduate Students Association (GSA), convened by its President, Nnamdi Samuel Nwala, also provided a platform for postgraduate students to engage on issues affecting their welfare and academic experience. Such participation remains important in ensuring that student concerns are heard and addressed. The University-wide monthly sanitation exercise held on Saturday October 31, 2026 and we look forward to a cleaner Uniport. But university life must extend beyond lectures, accommodation and payments. Opportunities for practical learning, creativity and professional development matter too. Afro Talent Lab 2026, holding at The Vinicunca from November 20 to December 20, offers students and young talents an opportunity to develop practical skills and explore new possibilities. Registration is open. Ultimately, a better Uniport requires more than academic progress. It demands transparent systems, responsive leadership, active student participation and opportunities that prepare students for life beyond the classroom. The question is not just what Uniport offers, but how effectively students can access and benefit from it. “You don't need to see the whole staircase to take the first step; you just need enough light for the step right in front of you.” Martin Luther King Jr. Starting something new—whether it’s preparing for a tough semester, launching a project, or stepping into a new room—can feel overwhelming when you look at the entire mountain ahead. We often stall because we want to have every single detail figured out before we move. But progress doesn't demand certainty. It demands courage. You don't need a master plan for the next five years to make today count. You just need the clarity, focus, and grit to handle what's right in front of you. This week, focus on the step, not the staircase. Choose action over overthinking. BOLD Conversations | Episode 39 Topic: Where is the Line Between Bullying and Discipline by a Lecturer? While strict academic discipline is necessary to uphold standards, an uncomfortable truth remains: some lecturers cross the line from firmness into intimidation, public humiliation, or targeted victimization. This topic opens up a bold discussion on academic authority versus abuse of power. Where does necessary classroom discipline end and targeted victimization begin? Has the power dynamic become too skewed, leaving students vulnerable without recourse? To succeed, some argue that tough lecturer interactions build character. But if we allow intimidation to masquerade as discipline, do we compromise student well-being? Is what a lecturer calls "firmness" actually bullying? Tonight, we examine the fine line students and lecturers navigate. We’ll explore the power dynamics, the psychological impact, and where true accountability lies in higher education. 🗓 Wednesday, October 28, 2026 | 7 PM 📍 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@UniqueStoary See you by 7 PM. EDITORIAL | Uniport: Beyond The Headlines Weeks after the demolition exercise at the University of Port Harcourt, the dust is yet to settle. Yet, campus life continues, with developments that shape students’ everyday experiences. Returning students can now pay their school fees for the 2026/2027 academic session, with fees retained at the previous rate of ₦78,000. This decision by the University Management deserves appreciation, as maintaining the existing rate offers some relief amid the financial demands of university life. The transition from the ARIS Uniport portal to the new student portal, https://ups.uniport.edu.ng, is another important development. Students can log in with their existing details, while the release of shortlisted students for hostel accommodation by the Student Affairs Department brings renewed attention to students’ housing needs and the importance of a transparent allocation process. Away from campus administration, Unique Stoary’s visit to The Vinicunca added a creative dimension to the week. Through its partnership with Afro Talent Lab ’26, the team gained deeper insight into an initiative designed to nurture talent and open pathways for young people in the creative industry. These developments reflect the many dimensions of university life, from infrastructure and affordability to student welfare, creativity and skills development. As the new session unfolds, the focus must remain on building an environment where students can learn, grow and thrive. Progress is not measured by announcements alone, but by the difference decisions and opportunities make in people’s lives. “Grow through what you know.” Sometimes, the next level of your growth begins when you stop trying to prove how much you know and start becoming willing to learn what you don't. You don't have to be the most experienced person in the room to make progress. Stay curious, accept correction, ask questions, and let every experience refine you. Growth is not just about how far you've come, but how willing you are to keep evolving. This week, choose growth over ego.
