  • BOLD Conversations | Episode 21

Topic: Is NYSC Still Necessary in Today’s Nigeria?

Every year, thousands of fresh graduates pack their bags, put on the iconic white shorts, and head to orientation camps across the country. The National Youth Service Corps was built on a beautiful vision: fostering national unity, encouraging cross-cultural integration, and driving rural development. For decades, it has been a rite of passage, a mandatory bridge between school and the "real world."

But if you look closely at today's landscape, the reality on the ground feels very different from the original blueprint.

We see a distinct divide forming. One side argues that in an economy driven by technology, digital skills, and rapid career placement, a mandatory one-year pause is an outdated system that drains productive time and exposes youth to unnecessary security risks. The other side suggests that NYSC remains the only thread keeping national unity alive, providing essential labor in public schools and clinics, and giving young Nigerians a rare, eye-opening glimpse outside their comfort zones.

Is NYSC still a vital tool for nation-building, or has it become a glorified, risky routine that our generation has outgrown?

Tonight, we are looking honestly at our current reality. We’re asking:
Is it time to scrap the scheme, completely restructure it for the modern age, or keep it exactly as it is?

I sincerely acknowledge all students who participated in the Pad a Girl Program—a vision born out of goodwill, deep love for students, and a strong commitment to giving back to the University of Port Harcourt community, with special regard for our female students.
Convened through the Office of the Chief Judge, DIMKPA NOBLE KA-ALENEBARI LAH, this initiative reflects purposeful service, quiet leadership, and a shared responsibility to uplift student life.

Special recognition goes to the University Management for their support in ensuring the smooth and successful execution of the program. I also sincerely appreciate the Vice Chancellor, the Digital Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), and the Dean of Student Affairs for their presence and for ensuring everything was well organized and properly coordinated.

To every hostel and organization that participated—including King Jaja, Goodluck Jonathan, Dan Etete, NUH, Pharmacy Hostel, NDPC, NDDC, NNPC, TETFund Hostel, New Medical Hostel, and Clinic Student Quarters—and to every student who showed up and contributed energy and presence, you made this moment truly meaningful.

I sincerely appreciate and love you all.

  • BOLD Conversations | Episode 20

Topic: Is Nigeria Getting Harder to Live In or Are People Just Complaining More?

Every day on the streets and across social media, the narrative is the same: the cost of living is soaring, the grid is unpredictable, and the pressure is mounting. We are constantly told that navigating daily life has become a extreme sport, requiring survival skills just to get by.

But if you look closely, the malls are still buzzing, new cars are hitting the roads, and premium events are constantly sold out.

We see a distinct divide forming. One side argues that the current economic reality has pushed the average citizen to their absolute limit. The other side suggests that Nigerians have simply developed a culture of hyper-focusing on the negatives, using complaints as a social bonding tool while actually adapting and thriving behind closed doors.

Is the "Nigerian dream" genuinely becoming harder to achieve, or are we just louder about our frustrations than previous generations were?

Tonight, we are looking honestly at our current reality. We’re asking:
Has our famous "Nigerian resilience" finally hit its breaking point, or are we just settling into a culture of recreational venting?

The statement also revealed that faculties will be required to compete using the kits of the countries they represent. The move, according to the Sports Directorate, is aimed at promoting uniformity and enhancing the spirit of the competition.

In another significant change, the VC Cup will now be played in a league format. Faculties will compete against one another, with points awarded based on match results to determine the final standings and eventual winner.

Faculty Sports Directors have been advised to liaise with the Office of the Director of Sports regarding country allocation and other logistics ahead of the competition.

Further details on fixtures, dates and venues are expected to be released in the coming days.

  • Uniport SUG Senate President, Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma Breaks Silence Amid Explosive Allegations.

The Office of the Senate President of the Students’ Union Government, University of Port Harcourt, under the leadership of Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma D., has officially debunked the circulating allegations claiming that the Senate President sponsored or invited armed individuals into the university environment during the recent political tensions within the Union.

According to the memorandum released on May 22, 2026, the allegations were described as false, misleading, malicious and politically motivated attempts aimed at tarnishing the image and integrity of the Legislative Arm of the Union.

    The statement emphasized that:

    * Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma D. has no connection whatsoever with any armed group or activity.
    * The Office remains committed to peace, dialogue, constitutional order and the protection of students’ interests.
    * Students and stakeholders are urged to disregard unverified narratives capable of causing panic, unrest or division within the University community.
    * The Executive President of the SUG was also called upon to publicly clarify the situation in the interest of truth, peace and responsible leadership.

The statement further stressed that the Students’ Union Government must continue to stand as a symbol of unity, maturity and accountability — not a platform for propaganda, misinformation or character assassination.

  • Uniport SUG Crisis Deepens as Senate Orders Probe Into SUG President, Removes Director of Socials.

Fresh tension has erupted within the University of Port Harcourt Students’ Union Government (SUG) following a high-stakes plenary session of the 10th Students’ Representative Council (Senate), chaired by Senate President, Dist. Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma.

The plenary, held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, addressed issues bordering on constitutional compliance, administrative accountability and financial stewardship within the Union.

According to the official resolutions released after the sitting, the Senate announced the removal of the Director of Socials, Comrade Tamunokuro Anga Lawrence, following findings presented by an investigative panel set up by the Senate.

The committee reportedly found alleged evidence of administrative and financial lapses and further accused the suspended Director of continuing to parade himself publicly as Director of Socials despite an existing Senate suspension and resolution. The report also alleged that he proceeded to organize unapproved activities and events while still under suspension. In addition, the Senate stated that Comr. Tamunokuro Lawrence failed to honour Senate summons, with the committee reportedly describing his notice of absence as “short, watery and frivolous.”

Following deliberations, Senator Omanoye Victory moved a motion for his permanent removal, which was seconded by Senator James Erhuwuwu. The motion was subsequently adopted through a majority voice vote. The Senate thereafter called on the Chief Justice to affirm and swear in the in-house Chairman on Socials, Senator Otto Joshua, as the new Director of Socials.

The plenary also shifted attention to concerns surrounding financial stewardship within the SUG leadership.

According to the Senate, notices had earlier been sent to the Presidency, the Treasurer, the Financial Secretary and the Director of Transport.

    The Senate disclosed that:
    • The President sent a notice of absence alongside a request for one-week grace to appear before the Senate.
    • The Treasurer and Financial Secretary appeared before the Senate and were interrogated during the sitting.
    • The Director of Transport reportedly failed to honour the Senate’s invitation.

Following deliberations and interrogation of available officials, the Senate stated that allegations bordering on presidential financial irregularities and breaches of constitutional provisions emerged.

Consequently, the Senate leadership announced the constitution of a five-man investigative committee to probe the Executive President Senator Amaechi Tamunotonye Walson and report its findings and recommendations back to the Senate.

Speaking during the plenary, Senate President Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma reportedly charged Senators to remain firm in defending constitutional order and insisted that the Senate under his leadership would not be influenced externally.

The Senate also explained that the plenary was moved online due to security concerns, low turnout and the presence of unidentified persons around the physical venue.

The unfolding developments have since sparked widespread reactions across the Uniport student community, with many students closely monitoring what could become one of the most consequential political moments within the current SUG administration.

  • EDITORIAL: University of Port Harcourt Return to National Relevance.

The latest 2026 JAMB UTME application statistics have revealed something remarkable — the University of Port Harcourt is back in the national conversation.

After spending five consecutive years outside Nigeria’s Top 10 most preferred universities, Uniport has now emerged as the 10th most applied-to university in the country, recording 48,199 first-choice applications and securing 2.15% of the total national application share.

Leading the chart are Lagos State University, University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, University of Benin, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, University of Ilorin, University of Nigeria, and Federal University Oye-Ekiti.

This development may appear like just another statistic, but it represents something much deeper; a renewed confidence in the institution by students, parents, and stakeholders across Nigeria.

The rise suggests that Uniport’s academic environment, visibility, student culture, and institutional reputation are once again attracting national attention. It also signals that the university is gradually reclaiming its place among Nigeria’s most competitive and desirable institutions.

What makes this achievement even more significant is the consistency of older institutions that have dominated the rankings for years. Breaking into that space is not accidental; it is earned through relevance, perception, and sustained institutional appeal.

This achievement speaks volumes about the growing confidence in the university’s leadership, academic direction, and institutional visibility under the administration of Owunari Georgewill.

At a time when competition for relevance among Nigerian universities is stronger than ever, Uniport’s resurgence is a powerful statement that the institution is moving forward with purpose and renewed energy.

Interestingly, this recognition comes around the birthday season of the Vice Chancellor, making it a truly symbolic and beautiful gift — not wrapped in paper, but written boldly in national statistics.

Indeed, the numbers are speaking, and they are speaking well of Uniport.

Uniport is not just growing in numbers — it is growing in influence.

  • OFFICE OF THE SENATE PRESIDENT

    DATE: 3rd May, 2026

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE AND SOLIDARITY TO THE UNICROSS COMMUNITY

The 10th Senate, Students’ Union Government, University of Port Harcourt, led by Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Desmond ILEGIMOKUMA, Senate President and Chairman, Rivers State Institute of Legislative Leaders Forum (RIVSILLF), expresses its deepest sorrow over the tragic incident that has shaken the University of Cross River State community.

The loss of young, promising student leaders and the injuries sustained by others, including key members of the Students’ Union Government, is a painful reality that has touched the entire Niger Delta student movement.

This unfortunate occurrence has robbed the student community of voices filled with purpose, courage, and dedication. These were individuals committed to service, advocacy, and the progress of their peers. Their absence is deeply felt, and their contributions will not be forgotten.

Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the departed. We pray that God grants them comfort, strength, and the grace to endure this painful loss. To those currently receiving medical attention, we extend our prayers for healing, restoration, and a swift recovery. May strength find them in this critical time.

We urge the entire UNICROSS community to remain united, support one another, and find strength in togetherness. In moments like this, solidarity and compassion become our greatest pillars.

Please be assured that the 10th Senate, SUG UNIPORT, and the Rivers State student body stand with you in grief and in hope. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may healing come to every heart affected by this tragedy.

    Signed:
    Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Desmond ILEGIMOKUMA
    Senate President, SUG UNIPORT
    Chairman, RIVSILLF
    RIVSILLF 001

    Through:
    Sen. Alwell Queen-Sharon C.

OFFICE OF THE SENATE PRESIDENT DATE: 3rd May, 2026 MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE AND SOLIDARITY TO THE UNICROSS COMMUNITY The 10th Senate, Students’ Union Government, University of Port Harcourt, led by Sen. Signed: Sen. Bestman Ayebaye Desmond ILEGIMOKUMA Senate President, SUG UNIPORT Chairman, RIVSILLF RIVSILLF 001 Through: Sen. Alwell Queen-Sharon C.
