Topic: Where is the Line Between Bullying and Discipline by a Lecturer?

While strict academic discipline is necessary to uphold standards, an uncomfortable truth remains: some lecturers cross the line from firmness into intimidation, public humiliation, or targeted victimization.

This topic opens up a bold discussion on academic authority versus abuse of power. Where does necessary classroom discipline end and targeted victimization begin? Has the power dynamic become too skewed, leaving students vulnerable without recourse?

To succeed, some argue that tough lecturer interactions build character. But if we allow intimidation to masquerade as discipline, do we compromise student well-being? Is what a lecturer calls "firmness" actually bullying?

Tonight, we examine the fine line students and lecturers navigate. We’ll explore the power dynamics, the psychological impact, and where true accountability lies in higher education.

  • BOLD Conversations | Episode 37

Topic: Is University Education Still Affordable in Nigeria?

For generations, higher education in Nigeria was heralded as the ultimate passport out of poverty and a guaranteed pathway toward socio-economic mobility. Today, that time-honored promise faces a profound structural crisis as sweeping fee hikes hit public tertiary institutions nationwide.

This topic opens up a bold discussion on rising tuition and other university fees, the financial burden on students and parents, access to education, and the responsibility of government in making public university education affordable. Is higher education becoming a privilege for the wealthy rather than a right for every Nigerian?

Cost-reflective pricing and university autonomy, you argue that institutions urgently need funding to maintain facilities, support research, and ensure stable academic calendars amidst soaring inflation. But when mandatory fees double or triple overnight, the burden on struggling parents and self-funded students becomes devastating—forcing thousands to defer their studies or drop out entirely. Is institutional quality worth pricing out the average Nigerian youth?

Yet, tuition-free public education, you protect equal access, social mobility, and the government’s duty to invest in human capital. Yet, with public funding stretched thin and student loan schemes facing operational hurdles, can universities survive without realistic financial backing? How do we balance institutional survival with citizen accessibility without destroying young dreams?

Tonight, we dissect the economic reality every student, parent, and stakeholder must navigate today. We’ll explore the root causes of rising campus costs, evaluate government interventions, and question what the future holds.

  • Time Cheated Me: How My Six Months I.T at the Refinery Clinic Made My 2026.

If someone had told me at the start of the year that waking up before dawn four days a week would end up being the highlight of my 2026, I would have laughed so hard. Yet here I am, looking at the calendar with barely a month left of my Industrial Training, wondering how time managed to move this fast. Honestly, I feel a little cheated.

My journey began on the 4th of May, 2026, the day I officially resumed as an industrial trainee at the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) – NNPC Limited. Walking into an environment of that scale for the first time is an experience on its own. Every day felt like stepping into the heartbeat of a giant industrial world. My primary posting was the medical laboratory, a space that would quickly become my second home. Before I could fall in love with the work, however, I had to survive what I call a very rude routine.

Nothing in my schedule at the University of Port Harcourt had prepared me for the sheer discipline of corporate and industrial life. Suddenly, my flexible student mornings were replaced by blarring of early alarms at ungodly hours and the frustrating rush to meet the staff pickup time. Doing that once is tough; doing it four days every single week was sincerely frustrating at first. There were mornings when my body protested hard against getting out of bed.

That adjustment period was easily my biggest challenge, but it gave me a perspective I didn't have before. It made me deeply respect the grit and consistency of 9-to-5 workers everywhere. Showing up, day in and day out, takes real effort.

Once I settled into the rhythm, the real work took over. In the medical laboratory, my main responsibility was preparing patient’s samples for my supervisor to analyze. Whenever I got the chance to run the tests and work on the samples myself, it was under my supervisor's close and patient guidance. Having someone watch over your shoulder can feel intimidating at first, but it taught me precision, patience, and confidence in my hands.

Soon enough, my training stretched far beyond the walls of the laboratory. Before I knew it, I was shuttling between the medical records department, the lab, and even the ECG room.

I will be honest: at the beginning, I saw all those extra duties as a burden. After all, I came here for the lab, why was I sorting records or assisting with ECGs? But somewhere along the way, my perspective shifted. Learning has always been a core part of who I am, so I decided to stop complaining and start absorbing everything around me. Embracing those "extra" roles turned out to be one of the best decisions I made. It gave me a complete picture of how patient care flows through a clinic, from the moment a file is pulled in records to the final diagnostic result.

The People Who Made Half of 2026 Beautiful

As much as I grew professionally, it is the human side of PHRC that I will carry with me as long as I can. Between the early morning bus rides, the switches around the clinic, and the quick walks to the ECG room, I met incredible people. I built genuine friendships and formed professional connections that I am deeply grateful for.

Looking back from May until now, working at the clinic didn't just fill up my logbook, it made half of my 2026 truly beautiful.

Now, the countdown has begun. With only one month left before I wrap up my Industrial Training, the early mornings don't even feel like a chore anymore. Instead, I find myself wishing I could slow the clock down just a little bit. Time really played a fast one on me, but I wouldn't trade this chapter for anything.

  • BOLD Conversations | Episode 36

Topic: Where’s the Line Cruise and Vibes Shouldn’t Cross?

It’s the ultimate Gen Z culture, but recent headlines have made it a matter of life-altering consequences. Following the recent disciplinary action at Madonna University—where a final-year nursing student was expelled and 14 others suspended over a viral hospital TikTok video captioned "No sick o, na Gen Z full hospital" — we are forced to ask: where does lighthearted banter end, and real-world destruction begin?

If you lean into the "cruise and vibes," you get quick engagement, viral reach, and instant connection. You build an audience, showcase personality, and participate in online culture. But when that content steps into professional spaces, clinical environments, or ethics violations, the fallout can cost years of hard work, tuition, and future careers in a single click. Is clout worth sacrificing years of sacrifice and professional ethics?

If you stand for professional boundaries and strict online discretion, you protect institutional integrity, patient dignity, and your long-term career security. You don't have to worry about disciplinary panels, suspensions, or public backlash. But in an era where institutions often react with extreme measures rather than guidance, is expulsion a fair punishment or an overreaching standard? Is it possible to balance youth culture with professional accountability without destroying young futures?

Tonight, we dissect the boundary every student, creator, and professional must navigate in the digital age. We'll explore where innocent fun crosses into negligence, whether institutions are being too harsh, and how to enjoy social media without losing your future.

  • The Chief Steering Commander: Prof. Chike Princewill Rewhuamwhu Chike — 10th Substantive Vice Chancellor, Uniport.

“Vision without discipline is just a normal dream, but structure, innovation, and unwavering integrity will always chart the course to institutional greatness."

If the University of Port Harcourt were an ocean-going vessel charting its way into global academic prestige, Prof. Chike R. Princewill Chike is the captain at the helm holding the navigation wheel.

While his Deputy Vice Chancellors manage the specific engines of administration, academic rigor, and research innovation, the Vice Chancellor defines the vision, sets the standard of governance, and takes final responsibility for every life and policy on campus. He is the executive anchor, public figurehead, and visionary leader driving Uniport into a new era.

•• A Track Record of High-Stakes Public Leadership.

Prof. Chike didn't rise to the university's top seat simply through classroom lectures; he brings a powerful blend of medical mastery, public health governance, and high-level administrative battle-testing:

    * From Cardiovascular Physiology to Executive Command: A renowned medical scholar in Cardiovascular and Tissue Perfusion Physiology, his deep clinical background trained him to make high-stakes, analytical decisions under pressure—a mindset essential for managing a university of tens of thousands.

    * Proven Public Governance: As the former Rivers State Commissioner for Health, he managed state-wide health crises, public infrastructure, and complex multi-stakeholder policy execution. That same political tact and administrative muscle now drive his leadership of Unique Uniport.

    * Uncompromising Academic & Legal Integrity: Stepping in as the 10th Vice Chancellor following a rigorous, competitive selection process, he brings a firm mandate centered on discipline, zero tolerance for misconduct, and institutional harmony.

While operations keep the university running and academic policies shape your intellect, executive leadership gives the entire institution its identity and momentum. From campus peace to global prestige, Prof. Chike R. Princewill Chike is the Chief Pilot ensuring your Uniport journey leads directly to impact and greatness.

  • EDITORIAL: Campus Safety, Community Wins, and the Academic Pause.

Campus life at the University of Port Harcourt remains as dynamic as ever, shaped by active governance, strong community bonds, and unexpected academic shifts. Even as developments unfold rapidly across our campuses, the drive and unity of Uniport community remain constant.

Leadership and safety took center stage this week as the Student Union Government stepped up enforcement across campus. SUG Director of Transportation Comrade Onuchukwu issued a clear safety and roadworthiness directive to shuttle drivers, while Executive President Hon. Justice Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike warned against reckless driving and set up a dedicated Traffic Enforcement Committee to keep our roads safe. At the management level, Vice Chancellor Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike moved to deepen host community ties, and international horizons widened as Uniport explored a partnership with China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea for a West Africa-China Institute. Management also officially released the Approved Academic Calendar for the 2026/2027 Session.

Beyond administration, our community celebrated remarkable achievements and personal milestones. Warm birth anniversary wishes go out to MC Olaks following his vibrant Birthday Hangout, as well as Sandra Menekhana, a valued volunteer team member at Unique Stoary. Undergraduates in the Faculty of Agriculture also received inspiring words from Unique Alumna Marvy Onuoha, while discussions on "The Last Dance: Legacy vs New Era", a friendly football match between the preceding and succeeding Directors of Sports holding this week Saturday, sparked fresh reflection.

However, the academic landscape faced a sudden turn. Following the ASUU Uniport Branch strike action declared on Wednesday September 16, 2026, exams and other academic activities were grounded and we look forward to a positive resolution at the Congress holding today.

As we await further updates, the message to the Uniport community remains simple: stay calm, keep your minds sharp, and look out for one another. Use this pause productively, rest well, and remain prepared.

To cap it off, our digital footprint is expanding even further with the official launch of RSU Stoary in the Rivers State University.
