Campus life at the University of Port Harcourt remains as dynamic as ever, shaped by active governance, strong community bonds, and unexpected academic shifts. Even as developments unfold rapidly across our campuses, the drive and unity of Uniport community remain constant. Leadership and safety took center stage this week as the Student Union Government stepped up enforcement across campus. SUG Director of Transportation Comrade Onuchukwu issued a clear safety and roadworthiness directive to shuttle drivers, while Executive President Hon. Justice Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike warned against reckless driving and set up a dedicated Traffic Enforcement Committee to keep our roads safe. At the management level, Vice Chancellor Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike moved to deepen host community ties, and international horizons widened as Uniport explored a partnership with China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea for a West Africa-China Institute. Management also officially released the Approved Academic Calendar for the 2026/2027 Session. Beyond administration, our community celebrated remarkable achievements and personal milestones. Warm birth anniversary wishes go out to MC Olaks following his vibrant Birthday Hangout, as well as Sandra Menekhana, a valued volunteer team member at Unique Stoary. Undergraduates in the Faculty of Agriculture also received inspiring words from Unique Alumna Marvy Onuoha, while discussions on "The Last Dance: Legacy vs New Era", a friendly football match between the preceding and succeeding Directors of Sports holding this week Saturday, sparked fresh reflection. However, the academic landscape faced a sudden turn. Following the ASUU Uniport Branch strike action declared on Wednesday September 16, 2026, exams and other academic activities were grounded and we look forward to a positive resolution at the Congress holding today. EDITORIAL: Uniport This Week — SUG Week, Sports, Music, Politics & Entertainment. Last Thursday and Friday, Uniport came alive with the Spotify Campus Drop, a two-day experience combining music, creativity, workshops, conversations and live performances. Day One, “No Data, No Wahala,” introduced students to Spotify Premium’s offline listening experience, while Day Two, “Fresh Finds on Campus,” featured workshops, artist conversations and live performances. Unique Stoary collaborated with Spotify and was on ground throughout the two days, capturing the energy and memorable moments from the experience. Now, a new week begins with even more happening across campus. At the centre of the week is SUG Week ’26, themed “Liberation.” The celebration officially began on Sunday with Praise Night, bringing students together for worship, music and celebration. With more activities lined up, SUG Week is set to provide students with opportunities to connect, unwind and create memorable experiences beyond the classroom. Tuesday is a big day for football lovers. The Uniport Stadium will host the Uniport Freshers’ Cup Final, with BMS taking on SSLT at 10:00 AM. Later in the day, Portugal (Engineering) will face Mexico (Agric) at 2:00 PM in another highly anticipated final. Two finals, one stadium and plenty at stake. Meanwhile, the SUG political season has entered a new phase. The campaign period for students who indicated interest in contesting for elective positions has officially ended. After weeks of campaigns, promises and engagements across campus, attention now shifts to the next stage of the electoral process. With campaigning over, students have an opportunity to reflect on the candidates, their ideas and records, and the kind of leadership they want. Beyond posters and campaign slogans, the focus should remain on representation, accountability and effective service to the student community. And when the week winds down, MC Olaks Friday Night Laughs is set to bring comedy and entertainment to campus. The event holds at Unique Luxury Hotel and Suites by 6:00 PM, offering students the opportunity to relax, laugh and round off an eventful week. From SUG Week and football finals to music, student politics and comedy, Uniport has plenty happening this week. EDITORIAL: A Week That Defined Leadership Beyond Office. Some weeks are remembered for ceremonies. Others are remembered for decisions that change lives. The week-long close-out activities of the 9th Substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, will be remembered for both. Over seven days, the University community witnessed a remarkable celebration of leadership through a rally, command performance, public lecture and book launch, legacy tour, football tournament, evening of music, and thanksgiving service. While these events honoured the end of one administration, they also produced commitments that will shape the future of students for years to come. One of the defining moments came during the Public Lecture and Book Launch when Dr. Richard Nyong announced his commitment to build a 200-room hostel for the University. Student accommodation remains one of the critical needs of every growing institution, and such a pledge reflects an understanding that improving the learning environment is one of the greatest investments anyone can make in education. Then came the Evening of Music, where appreciation for talent turned into an extraordinary act of generosity. After receiving commendable reports on the performances of the students from the Department of Music, Sir Chief Hon. Justice Biobele Abraham Georgewill, the twin brother of Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, pledged scholarships for five students each in 200 Level, 300 Level, and 400 Level—a total of 15 scholarships. His gesture immediately inspired another. The 7th Substantive Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph A. Ajienka, sustained the momentum by matching the commitment with scholarships for another 15 students. Not long after, Professor Boniface A. Oriji, Director of the Emerald Energy Institute and Chairman of the Harmonized Committee on the Close-Out Activities, also pledged scholarships for five additional students. In one evening, 35 students were given something priceless: the opportunity to pursue their education without the weight of financial burden. It is a reminder that the greatest investment any institution can make is in its people. The week also highlighted the strength of student leadership. On Friday, July 10, 2026, the Finance Society, University of Port Harcourt, under the leadership of Ms. Victory Kwokwo, successfully hosted Career Fair 2.0. The event brought together distinguished professionals from academia, government, finance, and industry, creating a platform where students could gain practical insights, build meaningful connections, and prepare for life beyond graduation. It was another example of how student-led initiatives continue to enrich the University's academic ecosystem. Today, the University turns another historic page. Uniport SUG Announces New Format for VC Cup 2026. The Students’ Union Government (SUG), University of Port Harcourt, through the Office of the Director of Sports, has announced a major update to the format of the upcoming VC Cup competition. According to a statement signed by the SUG Director of Sports, Comr. Bolarinwa David Holla, the tournament will now adopt a “Country Version” format. Under the new arrangement, each faculty participating in the competition will represent a designated country throughout the tournament. The statement also revealed that faculties will be required to compete using the kits of the countries they represent. The move, according to the Sports Directorate, is aimed at promoting uniformity and enhancing the spirit of the competition. In another significant change, the VC Cup will now be played in a league format. Faculties will compete against one another, with points awarded based on match results to determine the final standings and eventual winner. Faculty Sports Directors have been advised to liaise with the Office of the Director of Sports regarding country allocation and other logistics ahead of the competition.
