The directive was contained in a memorandum issued by the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) and signed by Professor Rosemary Ogu, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic). According to the memo, the Second Semester Examinations are scheduled to commence on Monday, 31st August, 2026, and conclude on Friday, 25th September, 2026, in line with the University's approved revised academic calendar. Faculty Examination Officers have therefore been instructed to ensure that their respective faculties' examination timetables are submitted within the stipulated deadline to facilitate a smooth examination process. Uniport SUG Electoral Releases Electoral Guidelines And Eligibility. To be eligible to contest for any position of leadership in the Students' Union, all aspirants must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be a valid registered student of the University who is financially up to date. 2. Must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 3.50. The CGPA should be documented in a spreadsheet attached to the nomination form and duly signed by the Head of Department. However, for students in the College of Health Sciences and other programmes where CGPA is not used, their raw results shall be computed to arrive at a CGPA of not less than 3.50. 3. Must not be on any disciplinary suspension by the Union or the University that is detrimental to the peace and order of the University. 4. Must not be on academic suspension or temporary withdrawal from studies. 5. Any aspirant caught using force within or outside the University to coerce the Electoral Committee into being partisan, either through threats, bribery, or any act capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral process, shall be disqualified. 6. Nomination forms must be personally collected from and officially returned to the ELECO Chairman, Secretary, or Coordinator within the stipulated deadline. Late, incomplete, or proxy submissions will be rejected without the right of appeal. 7. Must participate in the compulsory community service, security screening, and manifesto. 8. Any aspirant vying for the position of Senate President or Deputy Senate President must have previously served as a Senator. 9. Any aspirant vying for the position of Chief Judge must have previously served as a Judge. 10. Any aspirant vying for the position of Judge must have previously served as a Barrister. 11. Must not belong to any cult group, secret society, or unlawful association. Aspirants must pass a background clearance. 12. Must not hold any public office recognized under the University. 13. All submitted credentials, signatures, and personal details must be 100% authentic. Any discovery of falsified grades, forged signatures, or manipulated documents before, during, or after the election shall result in immediate disqualification and nullification of election results. 14. In digital or online voting processes, any attempt by an aspirant or their supporters to compromise the voting platform, manipulate student credentials, employ automated bots, or conduct unauthorized login attempts shall result in immediate disqualification and possible security prosecution. 15. The office of the President shall be for a single tenure. 16. Any aspirant who has served in the Union twice shall not be eligible to contest the election. 17. Any aspirant found to have been involved in any financial misconduct while serving in any Union office shall not be eligible to contest the elections. Note: All aspirants must sign a binding undertaking to abide strictly by these guidelines, the Students' Union Constitution, and the certified final results declared by ELECO, subject only to legitimate petitions filed through the recognized Election Petition Tribunal. EDITORIAL: Beyond the Dissolution—What Happens to Students' Democracy and Campus Life at Uniport? The University of Port Harcourt community on Sunday, 19th July 2026, were stunned by one of the most consequential administrative decisions in recent student union history: the immediate dissolution of the Students' Union Government (SUG), Hall Representatives, and all other Students' Union activities. The University's position is clear. Through a memorandum signed by the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the directive of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike, the administration has ordered the immediate handover of all union property and directed elected officials to appear before an investigative panel to account for their stewardship. Equally swift was the response from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, rejected the dissolution, arguing that while allegations of misconduct should be investigated, elected student leaders deserve due process, transparency, and fair hearing. In a separate statement, NANS National Director of Special Duties, Comrade Levi Sam Okuru, described the action as excessive and called for dialogue instead of outright dissolution. The opposing positions have already ignited debates across campus and beyond. However, beyond the legal and administrative arguments lies a more immediate question that concerns every student: What happens next? The Students' Union Government is more than an executive council. It is the coordinating body behind many of the activities that shape campus life. Its dissolution leaves uncertainty around several ongoing and upcoming programmes that students have anticipated for months. Questions are already being asked about the fate of the Fresher's Cup, VC's Cup, and the Uniport D'Or Awards, coordinated by the SUG Director of Sports, Comrade Bolarinwa David Olaniyi (Holla). Will these events continue under university supervision, be postponed indefinitely, or be cancelled altogether? There is also uncertainty surrounding Play Fest, an initiative championed by the In-House Senate Chairman on Socials, Senator Otto Joshua, as well as the Functional Students Campaign 2026, a drug awareness programme organized by the Directorate of Students with Special Needs and hosted by Senator Henry Ikechukwu in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Rivers State Command. The campaign is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, 29th July 2026, at the Faculty of Education Auditorium. 🚨 BREAKING: Uniport Dissolves SUG as NANS President, Director of Special Duties Demand Immediate Reversal. The University of Port Harcourt has dissolved all Students' Union Government (SUG) activities with immediate effect, a decision that has sparked strong reactions from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). In a memorandum dated 19th July 2026, signed by the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the directive of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Princewill R. Chike, the University announced the dissolution of the three arms of the Students' Union Government, Hall Representatives, and all other Students' Union structures until further notice. The directive also instructs all executive members to immediately hand over Union property, official documents, financial records, keys, identification materials, and every other item belonging to the Students' Union to the Office of the Dean of Students' Affairs. Additionally, the affected officers have been directed to appear before an investigative panel to account for their stewardship when invited. The University warned that failure to comply with the directive would attract appropriate disciplinary action. Reacting to the development, NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, rejected the dissolution, describing it as a violation of students' democratic rights. He maintained that while the University has the authority to investigate allegations of misconduct, elected student leaders cannot be removed through an administrative memorandum without due process, transparency, and fair hearing. He called on the University Management to suspend the implementation of the dissolution order, respect the mandate of the elected SUG officials, make public the reasons for the action, constitute a transparent investigative panel, guarantee the affected officers fair hearing, and refrain from intimidation or victimisation of student leaders. In a separate statement, NANS National Director of Special Duties, Comr. Levi Sam Okuru, also condemned the University's decision, describing it as excessive and inconsistent with the principles of students' representation and participatory governance. He urged the University Management to immediately review and reverse the decision, stressing that dialogue and constructive engagement remain the best path to resolving disputes involving the Students' Union Government.
