STATEMENT FROM THE STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT, UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT The Student Union Government of the University of Port Harcourt, under the leadership of the SUG President, Comrade Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike, brings to the attention of the student body the outcome of the actions taken following the incident that occurred on Wednesday at the University Sports Institute involving a student and a staff member identified as Coach Fidelis. Immediately after the incident occurred, the Student Union Government took decisive action and did not relent in seeking justice for the affected student. The SUG President and representatives of the Union proceeded to the Senate Building, where they engaged the appropriate authorities and made it clear that the Union would continue to pursue the matter until appropriate action was taken. Subsequently, representatives of the Student Union Government visited the Sports Institute where the incident occurred and continued engagements with the University Management, insisting that appropriate action be taken and that the safety and welfare of students be given due consideration. Following these interventions and engagements, the University Management has taken decisive action, and Coach Fidelis has been suspended indefinitely. This development represents the outcome of the Student Union Government's immediate intervention and continued engagement on the matter. The Student Union Government appreciates the University Management for listening to the concerns raised and for taking action on the matter. We also acknowledge the importance of due process in addressing issues involving students and members of staff. We urge all students to continue to abide by the rules, regulations, and lawful directives of the University. Students are encouraged to conduct themselves responsibly and to make use of the appropriate channels for resolving grievances and disputes. The Student Union Government remains committed to standing up for the legitimate rights and interests of students. We also remain ready to work constructively with the University Management and all relevant stakeholders towards maintaining a safe, peaceful, and conducive environment for learning.
