🚨 BREAKING: Uniport Dissolves SUG as NANS President, Director of Special Duties Demand Immediate Reversal. The University of Port Harcourt has dissolved all Students' Union Government (SUG) activities with immediate effect, a decision that has sparked strong reactions from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). In a memorandum dated 19th July 2026, signed by the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the directive of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Princewill R. Chike, the University announced the dissolution of the three arms of the Students' Union Government, Hall Representatives, and all other Students' Union structures until further notice. The directive also instructs all executive members to immediately hand over Union property, official documents, financial records, keys, identification materials, and every other item belonging to the Students' Union to the Office of the Dean of Students' Affairs. Additionally, the affected officers have been directed to appear before an investigative panel to account for their stewardship when invited. The University warned that failure to comply with the directive would attract appropriate disciplinary action. Reacting to the development, NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, rejected the dissolution, describing it as a violation of students' democratic rights. The University of Port Harcourt community on Sunday, 19th July 2026, were stunned by one of the most consequential administrative decisions in recent student union history: the immediate dissolution of the Students' Union Government (SUG), Hall Representatives, and all other Students' Union activities. The University's position is clear. Through a memorandum signed by the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the directive of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike, the administration has ordered the immediate handover of all union property and directed elected officials to appear before an investigative panel to account for their stewardship. Equally swift was the response from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
