From: Office of the Director, University of Port Harcourt A-Level School, Ashgrove Academy.

Title: Unprecedented Milestones in Academic Excellence: The UNIPORT A-Level School Under the Pragmatic Leadership of Our 9th Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill (2021–2026)

    1. Preamble
The tenure of Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill as Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt has been marked by visionary leadership, strategic investment in academic units, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. The University of Port Harcourt A-Level School, Ashgrove Academy, under his administration, has recorded historic achievements that have redefined the landscape of advanced-level education in Nigeria.

    2. Historic Academic Achievements

2.1 JUPEB Diamond Rating - A First in Institutional History
For the first time since the inception of the A-Level School, the 2025 Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) National Assessment awarded the University of Port Harcourt A-Level School the Diamond Rating, the highest possible grade. The Academy scored 91.99%, a landmark achievement that placed it in the topmost tier of JUPEB-affiliated institutions nationwide.

2.2 Sustained Excellence: Back-to-Back Diamond Ratings
Building on the 2025 feat, the Academy not only retained the Diamond Rating in 2026 but surpassed its previous record with a superior score of 95.07%. This back-to-back attainment underscores a culture of sustained excellence and quality assurance institutionalized under the Vice Chancellor’s leadership.

2.3 National Recognition: Best JUPEB Results in Nigeria (2025)
In the 2025 JUPEB National Examinations, the UNIPORT A-Level School produced the best overall results nationwide. This national recognition affirmed the school’s position as the gold standard for A-Level education in Nigeria and brought significant prestige to the University of Port Harcourt.

    3. Institutional Growth and Impact Under the VC’s Leadership

    3.1 Increase in Enrollment
The credibility earned from these academic feats, coupled with the Vice Chancellor’s emphasis on visibility and excellence, led to an unprecedented surge in student enrollment. The school witnessed a multi-fold increase in applications and admissions, reflecting growing public confidence in the UNIPORT A-Level brand.

3.2 Enhanced Staff Welfare and Motivation
In line with Prof. Georgewill’s philosophy that “a motivated workforce drives excellence”, the period 2021–2026 saw deliberate improvements in staff welfare, training, and working conditions at the A-Level School. This translated directly into higher staff productivity, better student mentorship, and improved academic outcomes.

3.3 Increased National and International Visibility
The achievements of the A-Level School attracted attention from stakeholders across Nigeria’s education sector. The school became a reference point for JUPEB best practices, and its success stories were showcased at national academic forums, a direct testament to the Vice Chancellor’s drive for global relevance.

    4. Acknowledgement of Leadership
These historic milestones would not have been possible without the pragmatic, visionary, and enabling leadership of Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill. His administration provided the strategic support, infrastructural backing, policy direction, and academic freedom required for the A-Level School to thrive.

He challenged us to “break ceilings”, and under his watch, ceilings were indeed broken.

  • Why the 216th Inaugural Lecture Changed My Perspective on Motherhood.

I had the privilege of attending the 216th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Port Harcourt, and I must say it was an experience that left a lasting impression on me.

Before the lecture began, there was a free medical outreach where attendees had their vital signs checked. It was encouraging to see the organizers prioritize the health and wellbeing of everyone present. We were also served refreshments, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere before the commencement of the event.

The lecture started promptly at 3:00pm and was delivered by Prof. Rosemary Ogu on the theme, "Sweet Mother: From Perils to Power." Throughout the lecture, she highlighted the realities of motherhood and the many challenges women encounter before, during, and after childbirth.

Drawing from her vast experience as a gynecologist, Prof. Ogu shared real-life experiences from her years of medical practice. Some of the stories were emotional and deeply moving, revealing the sacrifices mothers make and the harsh realities faced by women who experience pregnancy complications or even lose their lives while giving birth.

Beyond the medical perspective, her message was one of hope and resilience. She encouraged women to remain strong, never give up despite the challenges they face, and ensure that their voices continue to be heard in conversations about maternal health and wellbeing.

The lecture was formally brought to a close by the Vice-Chancellor, who commended Prof. Ogu for her insightful presentation and urged everyone in attendance to reflect on the important lessons shared.

Overall, attending the lecture gave me a deeper appreciation for mothers and a better understanding of the strength, courage, and sacrifices involved in bringing life into the world. It was an eye-opening and truly worthwhile experience that I believe every student would have benefited from.

  • EDITORIAL: What Recent Campus Events Reveal About the Changing Culture of the University of Port Harcourt.

There is something different about the University of Port Harcourt in recent weeks. Beyond the events themselves, there is a growing culture of participation that deserves recognition.

From the Legislative Summit to the Uniport Biggest Cook-a-thon, members of the university community have continued to show up—not just students, but management, staff, alumni, and student leaders. The presence of the Vice Chancellor and other principal officers at student-led activities sends a powerful message: campus initiatives matter, and student engagement is worth supporting.

One detail that has quietly become symbolic is the consistent use of Uniport water at major university events. While it may seem insignificant, it reflects an intentional effort to promote the institution's own products and identity. Institutions are strengthened when they consciously support what belongs to them.

Equally noteworthy is the participation of past Students' Union Government presidents and former executives at recent events. Their attendance at the Cook-a-thon demonstrated that leadership does not end with the expiration of a tenure. It reinforces continuity, mentorship, and a shared commitment to the growth of the university community.

Sporting activities have also contributed to this atmosphere. With the VC Cup currently underway, students have another opportunity to gather beyond the classroom, building friendships, healthy competition, and school spirit.

Academic engagement has not been left behind. On June 26, 2026, the Tax Club, University of Port Harcourt, in collaboration with the Nigeria Revenue Service, successfully hosted its maiden tax conference at the Faculty of Law Auditorium. The conference, themed "The New Nigerian Tax Law: A Pedestal for Sustainable Economic and Business Growth," marked an important milestone for a club established only on May 7, 2024. It demonstrates that student associations are increasingly creating platforms that extend learning beyond lecture halls and connect students with national conversations.

The momentum continues. On Thursday, July 2, 2026, the university community will gather once again at the Auditorium of the CBN Centre of Excellence for another landmark event themed "Sweet Mother: From Perils to Power." The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Rosemary Ogu, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, College of Health Sciences, and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics). Beyond the keynote lecture, the programme includes a medical outreach, red-carpet reception, and academic procession, reflecting an event that combines health advocacy, scholarship, and institutional celebration. It is yet another example of the diverse opportunities available for learning and community engagement within the university.

These events may appear unrelated, but together they tell one story: the University of Port Harcourt is becoming a campus where people are willing to participate, collaborate, and invest in community life.

The challenge now is consistency. One successful week of activities is commendable, but a sustained culture of engagement is what ultimately defines a university community. Every stakeholder—management, staff, student leaders, associations, and students—has a role to play in ensuring that this momentum continues.

If recent events are any indication, Uniport is moving in the right direction. The task before the university community is simple: keep showing up.

This piece fits well as a Campulse editorial because it offers commentary and connects several recent campus developments into one overarching theme, rather than simply reporting the events.

  • EDITORIAL: More Than a Ceremony — A Convocation Week That Reintroduced the University of Port Harcourt to the World.

The 36th Combined Convocation of the University of Port Harcourt was more than an academic ceremony. It was a defining moment in the University's history—a week where excellence met legacy, innovation met tradition, and one era gracefully prepared to hand over to another.

For seven memorable days, Uniport became a gathering point for scholars, alumni, policymakers, industry leaders, students, parents, and friends who came together to celebrate not just the conferment of degrees but the enduring impact of an institution that has continued to shape leaders across Nigeria and beyond.

From the opening Jumat Service and Convocation Service to the final conferment of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, every event reflected a University committed to scholarship, innovation, leadership, and service.

The week also carried a deeper significance. It marked the last Convocation to be presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill, whose tenure comes to an end in July, 2026. Throughout his administration, the University of Port Harcourt has continued to strengthen its reputation for academic excellence, research, infrastructure development, and institutional stability. The 36th Combined Convocation stood as a fitting culmination of a leadership defined by vision, progress, and an unwavering commitment to the University's growth.

The Vice Chancellor's Media Briefing set the tone for the celebrations, highlighting the University's achievements and aspirations while reaffirming its place as one of Nigeria's leading institutions of higher learning.

One of the most symbolic moments of the week was the Tree Planting Ceremony by the Best Graduating Students, Loveth Onyeguabor and Oyibo Daniel. Their act was more than ceremonial—it represented the lasting legacy that academic excellence leaves behind. As they planted trees within the University community, they also planted hope and inspiration for generations of students who will walk the same paths in pursuit of greatness.

The Red Carpet and Command Performance celebrated the University's rich cultural heritage and vibrant student life, while the Vice Chancellor's Dinner honoured 120 First Class Graduands, recognizing exceptional academic achievement and reminding the community that excellence is built through discipline, consistency, and resilience.

Thursday emerged as one of the defining days of Convocation Week.

The Research Fair and Exhibition transformed the University Library into a showcase of discovery and innovation, highlighting decades of academic excellence and groundbreaking research capable of addressing national and global challenges.

The Fireside Chat featuring Mr. Iyinoluwa Aboyeji OON —Co-Founder of Andela, Co-Founder of Flutterwave, and Founder of Future Africa—provided students and young graduates with practical insights on purpose, entrepreneurship, innovation, and life after school. His message encouraged a generation to move beyond seeking opportunities to creating them.

    Then history was made.

In a landmark announcement, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Distinguished Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, officially announced the appointment of Professor Princewill Chike as the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt.

The timing could not have been more symbolic. As thousands of graduates prepared to leave the University's gates to make their mark on the world, the institution itself embraced new leadership to guide its next chapter. It was a powerful reminder that while students graduate, great institutions continually renew themselves, preserving their values while embracing new possibilities.

  • During his address at the Vice Chancellor's Dinner, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, made an interesting observation: about 80% of the first-class graduands appeared to know only the chorus of the Uniport Anthem — "Unique, Unique, Unique Uniport..." 🎶

In a light-hearted moment that drew laughter from the audience, he challenged the graduands to learn the full anthem before the Convocation Ceremony on Friday.

    PS
Many Uniport students are on this table. Let's do well to learn the full anthem and not only the chorus 😃.

  • Editorial: The Power of Direction in Defining Success.

In a world that constantly celebrates speed, noise, and visibility, it is easy to confuse motion with progress. Every day, young people are pressured to “do more,” “be more,” and “achieve faster.” But in the midst of this rush, one critical question often goes unanswered: Are we moving in the right direction?

Success is not merely about activity; it is about intentionality.

At its core, success begins with clarity—understanding what truly matters. Without this, effort becomes scattered, energy is wasted, and even achievements feel empty. Many students today find themselves overwhelmed not because they lack ambition, but because they lack direction. They chase trends, follow noise, and measure their worth by standards they did not set.

    But direction changes everything.

When you identify your priorities, you gain control over your time, your energy, and ultimately, your future. Direction means choosing purpose over pressure. It means saying no to distractions that do not align with your goals. It requires discipline—the kind that keeps you focused even when motivation fades.

This is especially important in an academic environment where distractions are constant and expectations are high. Exams, social life, financial pressures, and personal growth all compete for attention. Without a clear direction, it is easy to drift. But with intention, every action becomes meaningful.

Winning, therefore, is not just about external achievements. It is about mastering the internal battles—against doubt, fear, procrastination, and emotional instability. The greatest victories are often invisible: choosing consistency over excuses, focus over distraction, and purpose over fleeting satisfaction.

As students and young professionals, the challenge is not just to succeed, but to succeed right. To build a life that is not only impressive on the outside but fulfilling on the inside.

So pause. Reflect. Identify what truly matters to you.

Then move—not randomly, but intentionally because in the end, success is not defined by how fast you move, but by how well you choose your direction.

  • Editorial: Uniport Exams Underway — Performance Amidst Realities.

The first semester examinations at the University of Port Harcourt, which began on Monday, March 23, 2026, are now fully in motion. Across faculties, students have already sat for several papers, marking the true intensity of this academic season.

For many, the experience so far has been a mix of preparedness, pressure, and adaptation. While some students have settled into the rhythm of exams, others are still navigating the challenges that come with it—especially some who have written their exams at Ashgrove Academy.

Reports from students who have already taken exams at the centre highlight concerns around the overall examination experience. From issues of coordination to technical issues, to the conduciveness of the environment, these firsthand accounts have fueled conversations within the student community. When students walk into an exam hall, their primary focus should be on expressing what they have studied—not adjusting to conditions that may affect their performance.

These experiences bring to light an important reality: examinations are not only about academic readiness but also about the systems that support them. While the use of external centres like Ashgrove Academy may be necessary due to the university’s population, the quality of these arrangements must be carefully monitored to ensure fairness and efficiency.

At the same time, the resilience shown by students who have already written under these conditions is commendable. Despite the distractions and discomfort, many have pressed on, demonstrating focus and determination in the face of less-than-ideal circumstances.

As exams continue, there is a clear need for attention from the appropriate authorities. Immediate adjustments—where possible—and long-term planning will go a long way in improving the experience for students still scheduled to write.

For students yet to write, the message remains steady: stay focused, prepare thoroughly, and control what you can. The exam season is as much a test of composure as it is of knowledge.

At Unique Stoary, we recognize both the effort of students and the importance of a supportive academic environment. As the semester unfolds, it is our hope that every student is given not just the opportunity to write, but the right conditions to truly perform.

We wish you all excellent success.
