  • A Call For Transparency In The Disbursement Of The ₦50 Million First Lady’s Award To Uniport Best Graduating Female Students.

    During the 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt, held on July 24, 2025 two outstanding ladies — Victory Abanjo and Ibitayo Aluko — emerged as joint valedictorians with an exceptional CGPA of 4.89. In recognition of this historic academic feat, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, graciously donated ₦50,000,000 for the benefit of all female Best Graduating Students (BGS) of the 35th Convocation.

    However, several developments surrounding the administration of this donation have raised concerns that require clear communication and transparency from the appropriate authorities!

    1. Uneven Disbursement to Beneficiaries.
    Reports indicate that while some beneficiaries received payments last week, others have not yet received any communication or credit alert. This raises operational concerns regarding the disbursement schedule and the criteria guiding the release of funds.

    2. The Amount Disbursed Does Not Align with the Total Donation.
    It has also been observed that beneficiaries who have received the award were paid ₦100,000 each. Based on available information, the total number of female BGS for the 35th Convocation is far less than 50 students.

    Yet, even if we assume 50 students for the sake of calculation:

    * ₦100,000 × 50 students = ₦5,000,000
    * This represents only 10% of the ₦50,000,000 generously donated.

    Given the First Lady’s intention to reward academic excellence meaningfully, the current distribution raises important questions about:

    1. The actual number of qualified beneficiaries.
    2. The approved disbursement structure.
    3. The status of the remaining funds, which should logically be allocated to the selected students

    If the beneficiaries are fewer than 50, the expectation — based on principles of fairness and the spirit of the donation — is that each recipient should receive a proportionate amount, potentially up to ₦1,000,000 per student.

    This matter deserves urgent clarification from the University administration, particularly because the University of Port Harcourt has always prided itself on integrity, excellence, and transparency. Providing a detailed breakdown of:

    * the number of beneficiaries,
    * the criteria used,
    * and the fund utilization structure,

    will help maintain public trust and uphold the institution’s reputation.

    This is not an attempt to cast aspersions but a respectful call for accountability. The students involved have demonstrated excellence worthy of celebration, and they deserve full clarity regarding benefits publicly announced in their honour.

    We trust the University management to offer the necessary explanations and ensure that the First Lady’s gesture achieves its intended impact.
