  • EDITORIAL: Beyond the Dissolution—What Happens to Students' Democracy and Campus Life at Uniport?

The University of Port Harcourt community on Sunday, 19th July 2026, were stunned by one of the most consequential administrative decisions in recent student union history: the immediate dissolution of the Students' Union Government (SUG), Hall Representatives, and all other Students' Union activities.

The University's position is clear. Through a memorandum signed by the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the directive of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike, the administration has ordered the immediate handover of all union property and directed elected officials to appear before an investigative panel to account for their stewardship.

Equally swift was the response from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, rejected the dissolution, arguing that while allegations of misconduct should be investigated, elected student leaders deserve due process, transparency, and fair hearing. In a separate statement, NANS National Director of Special Duties, Comrade Levi Sam Okuru, described the action as excessive and called for dialogue instead of outright dissolution.

The opposing positions have already ignited debates across campus and beyond.

However, beyond the legal and administrative arguments lies a more immediate question that concerns every student:

    What happens next?

The Students' Union Government is more than an executive council. It is the coordinating body behind many of the activities that shape campus life. Its dissolution leaves uncertainty around several ongoing and upcoming programmes that students have anticipated for months.

Questions are already being asked about the fate of the Fresher's Cup, VC's Cup, and the Uniport D'Or Awards, coordinated by the SUG Director of Sports, Comrade Bolarinwa David Olaniyi (Holla). Will these events continue under university supervision, be postponed indefinitely, or be cancelled altogether?

There is also uncertainty surrounding Play Fest, an initiative championed by the In-House Senate Chairman on Socials, Senator Otto Joshua, as well as the Functional Students Campaign 2026, a drug awareness programme organized by the Directorate of Students with Special Needs and hosted by Senator Henry Ikechukwu in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Rivers State Command. The campaign is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, 29th July 2026, at the Faculty of Education Auditorium. With the dissolution now in effect, students are left wondering whether this programme and similar initiatives will proceed as planned.

  • 🚨 BREAKING: Uniport Dissolves SUG as NANS President, Director of Special Duties Demand Immediate Reversal.

The University of Port Harcourt has dissolved all Students' Union Government (SUG) activities with immediate effect, a decision that has sparked strong reactions from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

In a memorandum dated 19th July 2026, signed by the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the directive of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Princewill R. Chike, the University announced the dissolution of the three arms of the Students' Union Government, Hall Representatives, and all other Students' Union structures until further notice.

The directive also instructs all executive members to immediately hand over Union property, official documents, financial records, keys, identification materials, and every other item belonging to the Students' Union to the Office of the Dean of Students' Affairs.

Additionally, the affected officers have been directed to appear before an investigative panel to account for their stewardship when invited. The University warned that failure to comply with the directive would attract appropriate disciplinary action.

Reacting to the development, NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, rejected the dissolution, describing it as a violation of students' democratic rights. He maintained that while the University has the authority to investigate allegations of misconduct, elected student leaders cannot be removed through an administrative memorandum without due process, transparency, and fair hearing.

He called on the University Management to suspend the implementation of the dissolution order, respect the mandate of the elected SUG officials, make public the reasons for the action, constitute a transparent investigative panel, guarantee the affected officers fair hearing, and refrain from intimidation or victimisation of student leaders.

In a separate statement, NANS National Director of Special Duties, Comr. Levi Sam Okuru, also condemned the University's decision, describing it as excessive and inconsistent with the principles of students' representation and participatory governance. He urged the University Management to immediately review and reverse the decision, stressing that dialogue and constructive engagement remain the best path to resolving disputes involving the Students' Union Government.

  • EDITORIAL: A Week That Defined Leadership Beyond Office.

Some weeks are remembered for ceremonies. Others are remembered for decisions that change lives.

The week-long close-out activities of the 9th Substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, will be remembered for both.

Over seven days, the University community witnessed a remarkable celebration of leadership through a rally, command performance, public lecture and book launch, legacy tour, football tournament, evening of music, and thanksgiving service. While these events honoured the end of one administration, they also produced commitments that will shape the future of students for years to come.

One of the defining moments came during the Public Lecture and Book Launch when Dr. Richard Nyong announced his commitment to build a 200-room hostel for the University. Student accommodation remains one of the critical needs of every growing institution, and such a pledge reflects an understanding that improving the learning environment is one of the greatest investments anyone can make in education.

Then came the Evening of Music, where appreciation for talent turned into an extraordinary act of generosity.

After receiving commendable reports on the performances of the students from the Department of Music, Sir Chief Hon. Justice Biobele Abraham Georgewill, the twin brother of Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, pledged scholarships for five students each in 200 Level, 300 Level, and 400 Level—a total of 15 scholarships.

    His gesture immediately inspired another.

The 7th Substantive Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph A. Ajienka, sustained the momentum by matching the commitment with scholarships for another 15 students.

Not long after, Professor Boniface A. Oriji, Director of the Emerald Energy Institute and Chairman of the Harmonized Committee on the Close-Out Activities, also pledged scholarships for five additional students.

In one evening, 35 students were given something priceless: the opportunity to pursue their education without the weight of financial burden. It is a reminder that the greatest investment any institution can make is in its people.

The week also highlighted the strength of student leadership.

On Friday, July 10, 2026, the Finance Society, University of Port Harcourt, under the leadership of Ms. Victory Kwokwo, successfully hosted Career Fair 2.0. The event brought together distinguished professionals from academia, government, finance, and industry, creating a platform where students could gain practical insights, build meaningful connections, and prepare for life beyond graduation. It was another example of how student-led initiatives continue to enrich the University's academic ecosystem.

Today, the University turns another historic page. As Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill formally hands over the reins of leadership to Prof. Chike Princewill Chike, the 10th Substantive Vice Chancellor, the institution begins a new chapter. Leadership transitions are not simply about a change in office—they are about preserving enduring values while embracing fresh ideas and new possibilities.

Looking back, the significance of the past week lies not merely in the number of events held, but in the impact they created.

A public lecture inspired the promise of a 200-room hostel. An evening of music produced 35 scholarships. A student society connected young people with accomplished professionals through Career Fair 2.0. And today, a peaceful handover ushers in a new era of leadership.

These are the moments that define great institutions.

Buildings will stand. Scholarships will transform lives. Careers will begin because of opportunities created. Leadership will change hands, but the University's commitment to excellence must remain constant.

That is the true legacy of leadership—not merely occupying an office, but leaving behind opportunities that will outlive your tenure.

  • EDITORIAL: A Week of New Beginnings at the University of Port Harcourt.

The University of Port Harcourt is stepping into a defining week—one that reflects the resilience of its student leadership, the transition of its highest office, and the continuous preparation of students for life beyond the classroom.

In what many students have welcomed as a return to normalcy, officials of the Students' Union Government who were previously out of office have now been restored, paving the way for the Union to resume its activities with renewed purpose. The development is expected to strengthen student representation and shift attention back to governance, advocacy, and service to the University community.

While student leadership regains its footing, the University itself is preparing to bid farewell to an administration that has shaped its recent history. The week-long Close-out Ceremony in honour of Professor Owunari Georgewill, the University's 9th Vice Chancellor, marks the final days of an era that officially comes to a close on July 13, 2026. As the celebrations unfold, the institution also looks ahead to a new chapter under the leadership of the incoming Vice Chancellor, Professor Princewill Chike, who will assume office following the formal handover.

Amid these moments of transition, the focus on the future remains evident. On July 10, the Finance Society, Uniport, will host its much-anticipated Career Fair 2026 at the Faculty of Law Auditorium. Bringing together students, professionals, and industry leaders, the event promises to equip participants with practical career insights, networking opportunities, and the tools needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive job market. Registration remains open via https://tix.africa/discover/careerfair2026

As leadership evolves, administrations change, and students continue to prepare for opportunities beyond campus, one thing remains constant—the University of Port Harcourt continues to write new chapters in its story.

And as always, Unique Stoary will be there to tell them.

    Unique Stoary...digital heartbeat of Uniport.

  • Uniport 216th Inaugural Lecture: Every Mother Saved is a Generation Preserved.

The 216th Inaugural Lecture Series of the University of Port Harcourt, titled "Sweet Mother: From Perils to Power," was delivered by Professor Rosemary Nkemdilim Ogu, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), at the CBN Centre of Excellence Auditorium.

The lecture drew participants from diverse professions and backgrounds, both within Nigeria and beyond, to reflect on one of humanity's most important responsibilities—ensuring safe motherhood.

Professor Ogu reminded the audience that while motherhood is the ultimate expression of love, sacrifice, and fulfilment, it remains a journey marked by danger and preventable loss for millions of women worldwide. She emphasized that through knowledge, compassion, innovation, and collective action, this narrative can be transformed.

Her powerful message resonated throughout the auditorium: every mother saved is a future secured, a generation preserved, and a society strengthened.

Congratulations to Professor Rosemary Nkemdilim Ogu on delivering a thought-provoking, impactful, and intellectually enriching inaugural lecture.
