  • Professor Lucky Akaruese Clocks 70 Years, Bows out of the Services of the University of Port Harcourt.

    From the unsettling legacy of Socrates to the radical critiques of Karl Max and the moral-political reflections of Hannah Arendt, Professor Akaruese in his Valedictory lecture reminded us Philosophy has never been innocent as it has always been implicated in struggles, struggles against complacency, against injustice and against silence.

    The Uniport Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill was in attendance and he wished Professor Lucky Akaruese the best in retirement in good health, longevity and all that he desires; a time to start work and a time to retire.

  • EDITORIAL: Now That Matriculation Is Over — It’s Time to Get Serious with Academics.

    With the matriculation ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt now concluded, and all registrations, orientations, and formalities behind us, a new chapter officially begins for students — especially the freshers. This phase is no longer about getting admitted, finding lecture halls, or settling into campus life. It is about focus, discipline, and academic excellence.

    Examinations may still seem far away, but the truth is: exam preparation starts from the very first lecture. Every class attended, every note taken, every assignment submitted, and every tutorial participated in contributes to how prepared a student will be when exams finally arrive. Waiting until a few weeks to exams before becoming serious often leads to stress, panic, and poor performance.

    For freshers, this is a crucial foundation stage. Your first-year GPA sets the tone for your entire academic journey. Starting strong gives you confidence, motivation, and flexibility. A good GPA opens doors — from scholarships and academic recognition to leadership opportunities and postgraduate prospects. On the other hand, a weak start can be difficult to recover from and may affect your academic standing throughout your stay in the university.

    Now is the time to develop good study habits:

    * Attend lectures consistently.
    * Review your notes daily.
    * Ask questions when confused.
    * Form productive study groups.
    * Stay organized and manage your time wisely.

    Beyond reading, students must also learn to balance academics with social life. While making friends, exploring campus, and participating in activities are important, academics should remain the top priority. Uniport offers a vibrant environment, but success comes to those who can combine enjoyment with responsibility.

    As the semester progresses, let every student adopt a mindset of excellence. Preparation, consistency, and discipline are the keys. Whether you are a fresher or a returning student, remember: your future is being shaped daily by the choices you make now.

    Start strong. Stay focused. Aim high. Your GPA — and your future — will thank you.

  • Prof. Owunari Georgewill, Uniport Vice Chancellor Participates in the Launch of the National University Advancement Program.

    The National University Advancement Program initiated by the Minister for Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa (CON) is a program designed to harness one of the greatest assets of universities—their alumni—by creating structured pathways for alumni engagement, partnership, and investment in institutional growth.

    This program is a collaborative initiative involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation, and the Africa Finance Corporation. It draws attention to global best practices where universities successfully attract significant alumni support and investment, while challenging Nigerian higher education institutions to strategically engage their alumni in the development of their alma mater. The official launch of the program, alongside the commitment of key stakeholders, is expected to mark a significant turning point in strengthening sustainable funding and advancing higher education in Nigeria.

  • It was also funny to the point that we talked about the history of computers, what our forefathers went through before we got to the stage where we are now. I showed them AI, too. Funny how most of them don't even know what AI is. We talked about ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI tools. We even got to practice in the class.

    It was an interesting class. Other classes, we were peeping to see, because it was like—it was more of an interaction. We laughed. We answered questions. Some students won some money from me because of the correct answers they gave. We gingered others. It was kind of funny, but I really did enjoy it.

    Even at a point, I got so tired, because I had to teach like three classes. But nevertheless, it was fun. And that was the highlight of my day as a CORPER teacher.

    Oh, I'm so happy too, I scheduled my content today, we had about 9–10 content, which was fun, so my day was pretty productive.

    What about you? How was your day?

  • Once you come to that point in your teaching, when your students can't wait for your period before they come to call you, then you have entered.

    Something funny happened today. I had a class by a particular time, and then I decided, when it was ready to time, I decided to rest a little bit, so as to give them a little time to maybe write or finish the notes the former teacher that was in their class wrote for them before I come in and start my class.

    So I was still in the staff room, relaxing a little bit, trying to give them a bit of time. And then up to five students came.

    "CORPER Deborah, you have us now."

    And then I started laughing, because it was so funny to me. Because I can remember those days, there were particular teachers that we couldn't wait for their period so that they could be in the class, and that we could enjoy them.
