Last week, we took our coverage beyond the classroom and into examination venues, stopping by Ashgrove Academy, the ICTC, Basic and other examination centres to get first-hand perspectives on how the process was unfolding. At Ashgrove Academy, where technical challenges had affected the experience previously, there was noticeable improvement during our visit, with those challenges having been resolved. It was encouraging to see the examination process progressing with greater stability. Our visits also offered a glimpse into the different realities students face during examinations—from the pressure of "last minute reading" and navigating venues to the determination of students focused on completing their papers. As Week Two begins, the message remains simple: stay focused and finish strong. For those with examinations ahead, use the lessons from the first week to improve your preparation. Last Thursday and Friday, Uniport came alive with the Spotify Campus Drop, a two-day experience combining music, creativity, workshops, conversations and live performances. Day One, “No Data, No Wahala,” introduced students to Spotify Premium’s offline listening experience, while Day Two, “Fresh Finds on Campus,” featured workshops, artist conversations and live performances. Unique Stoary collaborated with Spotify and was on ground throughout the two days, capturing the energy and memorable moments from the experience. Now, a new week begins with even more happening across campus. At the centre of the week is SUG Week ’26, themed “Liberation.” The celebration officially began on Sunday with Praise Night, bringing students together for worship, music and celebration. With more activities lined up, SUG Week is set to provide students with opportunities to connect, unwind and create memorable experiences beyond the classroom. Tuesday is a big day for football lovers. The Uniport Stadium will host the Uniport Freshers’ Cup Final, with BMS taking on SSLT at 10:00 AM. Later in the day, Portugal (Engineering) will face Mexico (Agric) at 2:00 PM in another highly anticipated final. Two finals, one stadium and plenty at stake. Meanwhile, the SUG political season has entered a new phase. The campaign period for students who indicated interest in contesting for elective positions has officially ended. After weeks of campaigns, promises and engagements across campus, attention now shifts to the next stage of the electoral process. With campaigning over, students have an opportunity to reflect on the candidates, their ideas and records, and the kind of leadership they want. Beyond posters and campaign slogans, the focus should remain on representation, accountability and effective service to the student community. And when the week winds down, MC Olaks Friday Night Laughs is set to bring comedy and entertainment to campus. First, the much-anticipated GES examination timetable is out. The examinations are scheduled to commence on Monday, August 31, 2026. Students are encouraged to obtain the timetable, confirm their examination dates and venues, and begin preparing early. With the semester moving quickly, last-minute preparation may not be the best strategy. Away from academics, music lovers have something major to look forward to this week as Spotify Campus Drop comes to Uniport on Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14. Spotify, in partnership with The Orchard, will host Fresh Finds on Campus, celebrating emerging Nigerian talent through music, creativity, learning and live performances. The programme will feature Taves, Evado, Fimi, Amaeya, Kemuel, Ema Onigah, Swayvee and Braye. Activities will take place at the Old Convocation Arena, with sessions at the Law Faculty Auditorium on Friday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM before activities move to the Old Convocation Arena from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Voting is ongoing for the Uniport Sports Awards, including categories such as Uniport D'Or and Best Department Director of Sports. EDITORIAL: Beyond the Dissolution—What Happens to Students' Democracy and Campus Life at Uniport? The University of Port Harcourt community on Sunday, 19th July 2026, were stunned by one of the most consequential administrative decisions in recent student union history: the immediate dissolution of the Students' Union Government (SUG), Hall Representatives, and all other Students' Union activities. The University's position is clear. Through a memorandum signed by the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the directive of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike, the administration has ordered the immediate handover of all union property and directed elected officials to appear before an investigative panel to account for their stewardship. Equally swift was the response from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, rejected the dissolution, arguing that while allegations of misconduct should be investigated, elected student leaders deserve due process, transparency, and fair hearing. In a separate statement, NANS National Director of Special Duties, Comrade Levi Sam Okuru, described the action as excessive and called for dialogue instead of outright dissolution. The week-long close-out activities of the 9th Substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, will be remembered for both. Over seven days, the University community witnessed a remarkable celebration of leadership through a rally, command performance, public lecture and book launch, legacy tour, football tournament, evening of music, and thanksgiving service. While these events honoured the end of one administration, they also produced commitments that will shape the future of students for years to come. One of the defining moments came during the Public Lecture and Book Launch when Dr. Richard Nyong announced his commitment to build a 200-room hostel for the University. Student accommodation remains one of the critical needs of every growing institution, and such a pledge reflects an understanding that improving the learning environment is one of the greatest investments anyone can make in education. Then came the Evening of Music, where appreciation for talent turned into an extraordinary act of generosity. After receiving commendable reports on the performances of the students from the Department of Music, Sir Chief Hon. Justice Biobele Abraham Georgewill, the twin brother of Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, pledged scholarships for five students each in 200 Level, 300 Level, and 400 Level—a total of 15 scholarships. His gesture immediately inspired another. The 7th Substantive Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph A. Ajienka, sustained the momentum by matching the commitment with scholarships for another 15 students. Not long after, Professor Boniface A. Oriji, Director of the Emerald Energy Institute and Chairman of the Harmonized Committee on the Close-Out Activities, also pledged scholarships for five additional students. Why the 216th Inaugural Lecture Changed My Perspective on Motherhood. I had the privilege of attending the 216th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Port Harcourt, and I must say it was an experience that left a lasting impression on me. Before the lecture began, there was a free medical outreach where attendees had their vital signs checked. It was encouraging to see the organizers prioritize the health and wellbeing of everyone present. We were also served refreshments, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere before the commencement of the event. The lecture started promptly at 3:00pm and was delivered by Prof. Rosemary Ogu on the theme, "Sweet Mother: From Perils to Power."
