The commissioning ceremony, held over the weekend, was led by the Chairman of Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa.

The upgraded facility, now equipped with modern, state-of-the-art machinery, boasts an impressive production capacity of up to 8,000 bags per day. This development is expected to significantly boost the University’s internally generated revenue while enhancing overall operational efficiency.

As part of its oversight functions, the Council also undertook an inspection of key infrastructure projects across the University. Among these was the Federal Government-backed solar farm project, designed to ensure uninterrupted power supply within the campus. Additionally, the Council reviewed progress on an ongoing hostel accommodation project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement aimed at addressing the growing housing needs of students.

Appointment Process for 10th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt Enters Crucial Stage

The process for the appointment of the 10th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt has reached a critical stage, following the opening and screening of applications by the Governing Council.

At a formal session presided over by the Chairman of Council, Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa, sealed applications submitted by prospective candidates were opened and carefully reviewed. This exercise led to the shortlisting of candidates who met the stipulated requirements for the position.

Out of the fourteen (14) applications received, ten (10) candidates were successfully shortlisted, reflecting the Council’s meticulous and transparent approach to the selection process.

As the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Owunari Abraham Georgewill, gradually winds down ahead of the scheduled handover date of July 13, 2026, the University commends the Governing Council for the diligence and integrity demonstrated in conducting the exercise.

The University community remains confident that the ongoing process will yield a competent and visionary leader to further advance the institution’s mandate.

Most significantly, it marks the final Convocation presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill before the conclusion of his tenure. This reality transforms the upcoming May ceremony (May 18-23, 2026) into a "Grand Finale"—a final opportunity to solidify a legacy of excellence and set a gold standard for the future.

A leader’s final outing should be defined by precision. The 36th Committee, chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Rosemary Ogu, has these vital tasks:
1. Proper traffic management: People shouldn't be caught up in traffic gridlock on that day. Traffic should flow smoothly.
2. Convocation Booklet: The permanent record of a student’s hard work must not be a rare commodity. The committee should ensure every graduate have a copy of the brochure as access to this document is a commitment to the students' legacy and a reflection of the administration's respect for its stakeholders.
3. Spotlighting the Stars: The conferment of degrees is the headline, but the stories of our Best Graduating Students are the soul of the event. We call for a deliberate "Spotlight Series"—pre-event features that tell the stories of those who conquered the rigors of lecture halls.

University of Port Harcourt Commences Construction of Access Barrier at Julirose Hotels and Suites Roundabout.

In order to allow guests and visitors of Julirose access at all times, the Uniport Management is constructing an access barrier to limit access to the University at odd hours in the night save for going to the hotel.

With this, there won't be pretence of accessing the University while claiming to be a guest of Julirose Hotel.

Donald Ekong Library Hosts Media Team From Global Television, In Partnership With The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), To Document The Impact of TETFund Intervention Projects At Uniport's Library.

The TETFund Library Development projects have enhanced teaching, learning, and research by allocating learning resources, ICT equipment, and furniture within the institution.

During the interview, the significant support provided by TETFund, including both physical and electronic resources, was discussed. The media team also toured the library to observe how staff and users utilize these resources.
