EDITORIAL | Uniport: Beyond The Headlines Weeks after the demolition exercise at the University of Port Harcourt, the dust is yet to settle. Yet, campus life continues, with developments that shape students’ everyday experiences. Returning students can now pay their school fees for the 2026/2027 academic session, with fees retained at the previous rate of ₦78,000. This decision by the University Management deserves appreciation, as maintaining the existing rate offers some relief amid the financial demands of university life. The transition from the ARIS Uniport portal to the new student portal, https://ups.uniport.edu.ng, is another important development. Students can log in with their existing details, while the release of shortlisted students for hostel accommodation by the Student Affairs Department brings renewed attention to students’ housing needs and the importance of a transparent allocation process. Away from campus administration, Unique Stoary’s visit to The Vinicunca added a creative dimension to the week. Through its partnership with Afro Talent Lab ’26, the team gained deeper insight into an initiative designed to nurture talent and open pathways for young people in the creative industry. These developments reflect the many dimensions of university life, from infrastructure and affordability to student welfare, creativity and skills development. As the new session unfolds, the focus must remain on building an environment where students can learn, grow and thrive. Progress is not measured by announcements alone, but by the difference decisions and opportunities make in people’s lives. “Grow through what you know.” Sometimes, the next level of your growth begins when you stop trying to prove how much you know and start becoming willing to learn what you don't. You don't have to be the most experienced person in the room to make progress. Stay curious, accept correction, ask questions, and let every experience refine you. Growth is not just about how far you've come, but how willing you are to keep evolving. This week, choose growth over ego. EDITORIAL | Uniport Demolitions: Beyond The Rubble. The demolition exercise at the University of Port Harcourt has changed parts of the campus landscape, leaving behind cleared spaces and questions that extend beyond the structures that once stood there. Over time, stands, kiosks, shops and other commercial structures became part of the university environment, providing services and livelihoods. While the business owners and those affected count their losses, the removal of these structures raise questions about how they emerged, whether the necessary approvals were obtained, and how regulations were enforced. While the university maintains that the exercise targeted illegal structures, concerns remain about the notice given to occupants, the investments affected and the circumstances surrounding the establishment of these businesses. If rent or other payments were collected from occupants, the circumstances surrounding those transactions also deserve clarification. Beyond the demolitions, attention now turns to the future of the cleared spaces. Will they be landscaped, left open or developed for other purposes? Can the university preserve its green spaces while providing designated areas for legitimate commercial activities? This is also an opportune time for the university management to look into the dilapidated walkways across the campus. As the landscape undergoes changes, repairing deteriorated walkways would improve accessibility, safety and the overall campus environment. The demolitions may have removed structures, but the opportunity now lies in thoughtful planning, improved infrastructure and a campus environment that serves the entire university community. The question is no longer just what has been removed, but what will be improved and built in its place. If You're An Introvert That Just Gained Admission Into 100 Level, Pay Attention So You Won't Lose Opportunity. Let’s kill this comfortable lie early: University does not reward silence; it rewards visibility. Nobody is going to knock on your hostel door, see you curled up on your mattress reading a novel, and hand you a leadership role, an international scholarship link, or a high-paying freelance connection just because you are "peaceful and quiet... Back in secondary school, being quiet made you the "well-behaved student.. On this campus? Being completely silent makes you invisible. And in an overcrowded lecture auditorium of 500 confused freshers, invisibility is an academic and professional death sentence. Here is the brutal mistake most 100L introverts make.. You convince yourself that your only assignment is to attend lectures, sign the attendance sheet, run straight back to your room, lock the door, and avoid human contact. You tell yourself, "I don't like drama. I'm just here for my degree. Then year after year slips by: You miss out on crucial past questions and assignment updates because you refused to say hello to the person sitting next to you. You watch students with half your brainpower land student government slots, campus ambassadorships, and fellowship recommendations simply because people actually know their names. You graduate with a first class or second class upper, step into the job market, and realize nobody knows what you are capable of doing because you spent four years hiding behind the tag of "introvert. Being an introvert is a personality type; it is not an excuse for cowardice or laziness. You don't need to suddenly become the loudest party animal or turn into the noisemaker of your faculty. You don't need 200 friends.
