The University of Port Harcourt on Thursday, 12 December 2025, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Giolee Global Resources Limited, an indigenous Environmental Response company, for the full operation and revitalization of the University’s Bottling Company, which had previously performed below expectations. The signing ceremony took place at the Vice Chancellor’s Committee Room.

The agreement represents a significant step in the institution’s efforts to strengthen its business ventures and boost internally generated revenue.

Signing on behalf of the University, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, emphasized that the partnership aligns with the University’s drive to develop sustainable business models and revive dormant assets.

“This partnership is a testament to our determination to reposition and enhance the productivity of University-owned enterprises,” Prof. Georgewill said. “We believe that Giolee Global Resources Limited has the capacity and expertise to transform the Bottling Company into a profitable and efficient facility that will serve the University community and beyond.”

The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Giolee Global Resources Limited, Chief Lesi Maol, expressed appreciation to the University for the confidence placed in the company and assured that Giolee is committed to transforming the facility.

“This collaboration is a major milestone in strengthening the University’s investment portfolio,” Kabari noted. “We are confident that this agreement will yield meaningful economic benefits and set a strong precedent for future partnerships.”

The MoU establishes a framework for improved operational efficiency, increased production capacity, and expanded market reach for the revitalized Bottling Company.

  • UPDATE: Former Uniport Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi Assumes Office As UniAbuja Vice Chancellor Despite Earlier Protests Over Eligibility.

In a significant turn of events, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi — former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Port Harcourt — has officially assumed duty as the 8th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja on Thursday December 11, 2025 despite earlier protests challenging his eligibility.

His appointment, which was approved by the University’s 11th Governing Council during its 80th Extraordinary Meeting on November 7, 2025, was initially set to take effect from February 10, 2026, for a single, non-renewable five-year tenure. However, Prof. Fawehinmi has now taken over the leadership of the institution following a formal handover from the Acting Vice Chancellor.

Unique Stoary had congratulated Prof. Fawehinmi on November 11, 2025, shortly after his appointment was announced, acknowledging his academic leadership and breadth of administrative experience. But barely a month later, a coalition of academic staff — the Concerned Academic Stakeholders of the University of Abuja — publicly rejected the appointment, alleging that Prof. Fawehinmi did not possess a Ph.D., which they insisted was explicitly required in the advertised criteria for the Vice Chancellorship.

According to the stakeholders, though Prof. Fawehinmi is widely respected for his scholarly contributions, professional fellowships, and administrative competence, fellowships cannot replace a doctoral degree — a long-established qualification under NUC norms. They further warned that proceeding with the appointment could raise governance and legal concerns for the institution.

Despite the objections, the Governing Council has upheld its decision, and Prof. Fawehinmi has now officially resumed duties. Upon assumption of office, he pledged to strengthen academic excellence, enhance research output, promote institutional stability, and improve the student experience, emphasizing a commitment to collaboration across all sectors of the university.

As reactions continue to trail this development, the university community and the wider public are watching closely to see how this new phase of leadership will shape the institution going forward.

Once again, Unique Stoary congratulates Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi on his assumption of office as the 8th Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja. We wish him a purposeful, progressive, and impactful tenure as he takes on the enormous task of steering the university toward greater academic excellence, stability, and innovation.

  • Uniport Alumni Spotlight: Meet Professor Okechukwu Onuchukwu, Vice Chancellor, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.

From the classrooms of the University of Port Harcourt to the helm of one of Nigeria’s foremost universities of education, Professor Okechukwu Onuchukwu represents the power of academic consistency, institutional loyalty, and purpose-driven leadership.

A proud product of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Onuchukwu’s entire academic foundation was built within the Uniport system. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics, followed by a Master’s degree, and later a Ph.D. in Economics, specializing in Econometrics and Economic Theory. His journey at Uniport was not just one of learning, but of deep intellectual formation — shaped by rigorous scholarship, research discipline, and a strong commitment to excellence.

Rather than leaving academia, Professor Onuchukwu chose to give back to the system that shaped him. He rose steadily through the academic ranks to become a Professor of Economics, distinguished for his contributions to teaching, research, and mentorship. Over the years, he served Uniport in several key leadership roles, including Head of Department, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Director of the University of Port Harcourt Business School — positions through which he helped shape academic policy, faculty development, and student training.

His career is marked by scholarship and productivity. Professor Onuchukwu has authored and co-authored numerous books and over 90 academic journal articles, contributing significantly to economic research and policy discourse in Nigeria. He is also a respected member of professional bodies, including the Nigerian Economic Society, and has supervised and mentored countless students who now occupy strategic positions across academia, government, and the private sector.

In November 2021, his long record of service and leadership culminated in his appointment as Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rivers State. As Vice Chancellor, he has focused on academic discipline, institutional stability, staff development, and the promotion of integrity within the university system — values deeply rooted in his Uniport training.

His leadership style reflects the enduring influence of his alma mater: quiet confidence, intellectual depth, respect for process, and an unwavering belief in education as a tool for societal transformation.

Beyond administration, Prof. Onuchukwu remains a scholar, mentor, and advocate for quality education. His journey reminds current students and young academics that greatness is often built through patience, service, and commitment to one’s calling.

Today, Professor Okechukwu Onuchukwu stands as one of Uniport’s distinguished alumni — proof that the University of Port Harcourt does not only produce graduates, but builders of institutions and shapers of minds.

Your Uniport journey can take you anywhere — lecture rooms, boardrooms, or leadership offices. What matters is how you prepare, serve, and give back.

If you know any Uniport Alumni doing exploits, do well to mention them in the comment section and we might just shine the spotlight on them.

  • “The Children Who Try Too Hard”

Some children are not asking for attention.
    They are asking for relief.

They try so hard to be “good.”
They try so hard not to stress anyone.
They try so hard to hide their tears.
They try so hard to keep up — even when school drains them.

If you look closely, you’ll see it…
    Their eyes always searching.
    Their shoulders always tight.
    Their smile always too quick.

    These children don’t explode.
    They fold.
    Quietly.

This holiday, check on them too.
    Ask gentle questions.
    Offer soft spaces.
    Give room for rest.
    And remind them…
They don’t have to earn love with perfection.

Because the children who try too hard
are often the ones who feel unseen the most.

If you are a parent, sibling, caregiver or teacher—
look out for them this season.

If you find our educational contents valuable, then follow us for an amazing ride.

I am putting together an eBook that highlights psychological challenges school children face and the way forward, make sure you grab a copy to keep you ready to handle any child especially when school resumes.
I'm rooting for you and your children

  • The Lost Son Who Never Left.
When we hear the Parable of the Prodigal Son, our minds almost always sprint toward the younger brother, the rebel, the runaway, the one who traded home for hunger and dignity for desperation.

    He’s dramatic.
    He’s messy.
    He’s relatable.
    But standing in the shadows
of that celebration was another lost son.

The elder brother never left home,
yet his heart wandered miles away.

    And if we’re honest,
    painfully honest,
we sometimes look a lot like him.

The elder brother did everything “right.”
He stayed. He worked. He obeyed.

    But when grace burst
    through the front door
    wearing the younger brother’s
    tattered clothes,
the elder brother froze in the doorway,
    unable to celebrate
    what he believed
    someone else didn’t deserve.

He wasn’t lost in a distant land.
He was lost in his bitterness.
    Lost in comparison.
    Lost in entitlement.
    Lost in the quiet belief
    that his faithfulness
    earned him more love
    than his brother’s repentance did.

    And Jesus tells this story
    because this type of lostness
    is just as real,
    just as dangerous,
as the kind that rebels and runs.

We become the elder brother when
    Someone else gets a blessing
    we’ve been praying for.

    When God pours grace
    on a person we think
    should’ve “known better.”

    We serve faithfully,
    quietly and feel unseen.

    We clutch our sense
    of fairness more tightly
    than God’s heart of mercy.

    We start believing
    God owes us something.

    Sometimes our feet
    never leave the Father’s house,
but our hearts wander far from His.

But here’s the part we often overlook,
    The father didn’t just
run down the road for the prodigal.
He walked out into the night
    for the elder brother.

    He pleaded with him.
    Invited him in.
    Assured him of his place.
    Reminded him,
    “You are always with me,
and everything I have is yours.”

    The father pursued
    both sons with the same
    relentless love.

    One comes home from rebellion.
The other needs to come home
    from resentment.

And many days, that second son?
    That’s us.

    The gospel is wide enough
to welcome the broken and the bitter.
It restores the rebellious and the resentful.
It calls home the ones who run
and the ones who stand outside refusing to celebrate.

    Grace doesn’t just
    rescue the prodigal.
    It softens the elder brother.
It takes our clenched fists and opens them.
It pulls us out of comparison
    and back into communion.
It reminds us that every blessing
we have is a gift, not a wage.

God is asking us to be
    present ones.
    Ones who step inside
    the celebration because
His joy is better than our pride.

    If you’ve been the prodigal,
    there’s mercy.

If you’ve been the elder brother,
    there’s healing.

    If you’ve been both,
    then welcome to the family.
    Most of us have.

The Father is still standing at the door,
    light spilling behind Him, saying
    “My child, come in.
    Everything I have is yours."

The Lost Son Who Never Left. When we hear the Parable of the Prodigal Son, our minds almost always sprint toward the younger brother, the rebel, the runaway, the one who traded home for hunger and dignity for desperation. He’s dramatic. He’s messy. He’s relatable. But standing in the shadows of that celebration was another lost son. The elder brother never left home, yet his heart wandered miles away. And if we’re honest, painfully honest, we sometimes look a lot like him. The elder brother did everything “right.” He stayed. He worked. He obeyed. But when grace burst through the front door wearing the younger brother’s tattered clothes, the elder brother froze in the doorway, unable to celebrate what he believed someone else didn’t deserve. He wasn’t lost in a distant land. He was lost in his bitterness. Lost in comparison. Lost in entitlement. Lost in the quiet belief that his faithfulness earned him more love than his brother’s repentance did. And Jesus tells this story because this type of lostness is just as real, just as dangerous, as the kind that rebels and runs. We become the elder brother when Someone else gets a blessing we’ve been praying for. When God pours grace on a person we think should’ve “known better.” We serve faithfully, quietly and feel unseen.
