Uniport Alumni Spotlight: Meet Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ejekwu (aka Oga Sabinus), The Comedian Building Beyond The Laughs. What happens when a talent discovered during university days grows into a household name and a growing business brand? For Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ejekwu, popularly known as Oga Sabinus or Mr Funny, the journey from Uniport to the entertainment industry reflects creativity, consistency, and entrepreneurial ambition. A graduate of Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, Sabinus developed his comedy career while studying at Uniport. His distinctive expressions, exaggerated reactions, and relatable humour have since earned him recognition among Nigeria’s leading digital entertainers. In 2022, Sabinus won the Best Online Social Content Creator award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). Beyond online skits, he has ventured into acting, brand partnerships, and hospitality through Amora Resort in Port Harcourt. He has also taken his comedy beyond digital platforms with Sabi Comedy Club, creating a space for live comedy performances and entertainment. These ventures reflect how a successful creative career can expand into other industries and opportunities. Sabinus’s journey reminds students that their talents can become more than hobbies. With consistency, creativity, and a willingness to explore new possibilities, a skill developed on campus can grow into a career, a brand, or even a business. Your degree is a foundation, but your potential extends beyond the classroom. What are you building with the talents you have today? ▪️If you know any Uniport Alumni doing exploits, do well to mention them in the comment section and we might just shine the spotlight on them. EDITORIAL | The Week That Was: Academic Milestones, Campus Developments And Growing Creativity. It was another eventful week at the University of Port Harcourt, with developments spanning academic excellence, university governance, student engagement and entertainment. The University Governing Council approved the promotion of 96 academic staff, including 53 Professors and 43 Readers. The Senator Mao Ohuabunwa-led Council also toured university facilities, including the Senate Building and Choba Campus, to assess infrastructure and operations. Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria brought its 25th Anniversary and Customer Service Week celebration to campus, engaging students with connectivity offers, freebies and exciting activities. The week also featured the October edition of SABI COMEDY CLUB with MC Olaks, bringing laughter and entertainment to the community as the headline act Destalker alongside others delivered humour with mastery. Beyond capturing these moments, Unique Stoary is investing in its people. Our volunteers alongside those from RSU Stoary are undergoing a series of training sessions under the October Edition of our Capacity Building Sessions, covering hosting, project management, videography and photography, writing and editing. Guided by the theme “UNSCRIPTED: Developing the Instinct, Creativity & Confidence to Own Every Moment,” we are strengthening the skills needed to tell better stoaries and create greater impact. As we begin another week, we remain committed to documenting campus life, celebrating achievements and building a stronger community through stoaries that matter. EDITORIAL: The Stories That Shaped Uniport This Previous Week. The suspension of the indefinite ASUU strike has brought relief to students, with Management rescheduling the affected Second Semester Examinations and providing a clearer path towards completing the academic session. Meanwhile, institutional advancement remains in focus as NITDA and iDICE move towards establishing a Technical and Robotic Centre of Excellence at Uniport. An Access Bank delegation also visited University Management to strengthen existing partnerships. Student governance recorded notable developments, including SUG appointments, directives to Faculty Senators-elect, restrictions on private electric keke trips, and judicial decisions affecting scheduled congresses and the inauguration of Faculty Executives-elect. Beyond administration, the Uniport community celebrated birthdays, leadership milestones, student achievements, and entertainment. We extend warm birthday wishes to Prof. Udeme Georgewill, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies; Dr. Lekpa David, Associate Professor of Anatomy; the 10th SUG Senate President and Chairman of RIVSILF; and the SUG President, Hon. Justice Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike. Other highlights included the birthday edition of The Roast of MC Olaks, the SUG President’s attendance at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku inauguration, and the successful sign-out of Unique Stoary’s Volunteer Project Manager, Ebitimi Preye. On the sports front, the scheduled football match, tagged Last Dance, has been postponed due to rainfall and the resulting stadium conditions. A new date will be communicated. As academic activities continue and examinations enter their final week, we encourage students to remain focused, stay informed, and support one another. We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to everyone who has successfully signed out, marking the completion of an important chapter in their academic journey, and to those signing out this week. May this milestone open doors to new opportunities, meaningful growth, and greater achievements. Keep making your story count! EDITORIAL: The Celebration Ends, The Mandate Begins. The University of Port Harcourt has witnessed a week that celebrated the energy, creativity and unity of its student community. The recently concluded Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week brought students together through sports, entertainment, fellowship and other activities that created memorable moments across campus. From the Fresher’s Cup to the VC’s Cup, the sporting events provided a platform for healthy competition and school spirit while other activities like the Mr & Miss Uniport, etc further strengthened student engagement. Beyond the celebration, the week also marked an important transition in student leadership. The election and subsequent inauguration of Comrade Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike and the 2026/2027 SUG Executive Council ushered in a new chapter for student representation at Uniport. Unique Stoary congratulates Comrade Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike and the entire 2026/2027 SUG Executive Council on their election and inauguration. Their new mandate comes with the responsibility of turning the trust of the student body into meaningful action through effective representation, accountability, communication and a sustained commitment to student welfare. SUG Week may have ended, but the work of leadership has just begun. The students are watching, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact is here. Congratulations to the new SUG Executive Council. We wish the administration a successful and impactful tenure. EDITORIAL: Uniport This Week — SUG Week, Sports, Music, Politics & Entertainment. Last Thursday and Friday, Uniport came alive with the Spotify Campus Drop, a two-day experience combining music, creativity, workshops, conversations and live performances. Day One, “No Data, No Wahala,” introduced students to Spotify Premium’s offline listening experience, while Day Two, “Fresh Finds on Campus,” featured workshops, artist conversations and live performances. Unique Stoary collaborated with Spotify and was on ground throughout the two days, capturing the energy and memorable moments from the experience. Now, a new week begins with even more happening across campus. At the centre of the week is SUG Week ’26, themed “Liberation.” The celebration officially began on Sunday with Praise Night, bringing students together for worship, music and celebration. With more activities lined up, SUG Week is set to provide students with opportunities to connect, unwind and create memorable experiences beyond the classroom. Tuesday is a big day for football lovers. The Uniport Stadium will host the Uniport Freshers’ Cup Final, with BMS taking on SSLT at 10:00 AM. Later in the day, Portugal (Engineering) will face Mexico (Agric) at 2:00 PM in another highly anticipated final. Two finals, one stadium and plenty at stake. Meanwhile, the SUG political season has entered a new phase. The campaign period for students who indicated interest in contesting for elective positions has officially ended. After weeks of campaigns, promises and engagements across campus, attention now shifts to the next stage of the electoral process. With campaigning over, students have an opportunity to reflect on the candidates, their ideas and records, and the kind of leadership they want. Beyond posters and campaign slogans, the focus should remain on representation, accountability and effective service to the student community. And when the week winds down, MC Olaks Friday Night Laughs is set to bring comedy and entertainment to campus. The event holds at Unique Luxury Hotel and Suites by 6:00 PM, offering students the opportunity to relax, laugh and round off an eventful week. From SUG Week and football finals to music, student politics and comedy, Uniport has plenty happening this week. University life goes beyond lectures and examinations; it is also about the experiences, conversations, competitions and memories created along the way. As always, Unique Stoary will remain close to the action, bringing you the people, events and conversations shaping student life. Stay informed. Stay connected. Stay Uniport. EDITORIAL: More Than Lectures—The Week That Reminds Us What Campus Life Should Feel Like. When people think about the University of Port Harcourt, lectures, assignments, and examinations often come to mind. But a university experience has never been defined by academics alone. It is also shaped by competition, service, culture, creativity, and the opportunities that bring students together beyond the classroom. The coming weeks present a reminder of what a vibrant university community looks like. On Wednesday, 5th August 2026, the Uniport Women's Super League Grand Finale will see Cougar FC face Trojan FC at the Arena Field. Beyond determining a champion, the match is another opportunity to celebrate women's football and recognize the dedication of student-athletes who have committed their time and energy to representing their teams throughout the competition. Just two days later, on Friday, 7th August, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, University of Port Harcourt Detachment, will host its 2026 Combined Get Together and Award Ceremony under the theme, "Detached but not Detached." At a time when community service often receives less attention than it deserves, the event serves as a reminder that volunteerism, compassion, and humanitarian service remain essential pillars of campus life. The excitement continues on Friday, 14th August, as Spotify Africa brings its Fresh Finds on Campus experience to the University of Port Harcourt. With performances from emerging Nigerian artistes, the event is expected to expose students to new opportunities in music, entertainment, and the creative economy while reinforcing the University's reputation as a campus capable of hosting world-class experiences. Also on Friday is the VC's Cup 2026 Women's League Fixtures at UBA Field. Taken individually, these events are significant. Collectively, they tell a much bigger story. They remind us that a university is not simply a place to earn a degree. It is a community where leadership is developed on the football pitch, where character is built through selfless service, and where creativity finds expression on the stage. For students, attending these events is about more than entertainment. It is about supporting peers, appreciating volunteers, celebrating talent, building relationships, and participating in the life of the institution. These experiences often become some of the most enduring memories graduates carry long after they leave campus. As the University community prepares for these activities, perhaps the real question is not "Which event are you attending?" but "How are you contributing to making campus life richer for everyone?" A thriving university is built not only by those who teach in lecture halls but also by those who compete, serve, create, organise, volunteer, and show up. This week, Uniport has an opportunity to do all of the above. Let's make it count. EDITORIAL: The Smiles We Create, The Stories We Share. There are moments that remind us why community matters. Last week, as part of our Father's Day Special, the Unique Stoary team reached out to fathers across different homes and backgrounds. We read messages sent by their children—words of appreciation, gratitude, admiration, and love. While every message was unique, one thing remained constant: the unmistakable joy in the voices of the fathers when the messages were read. Some laughed. Some became emotional. Some were momentarily speechless. In those brief conversations, we witnessed something powerful—the impact of appreciation. In a world that often moves too fast, taking a moment to celebrate those who have sacrificed, provided, guided, and protected reminded us that the simplest words can have the greatest effect. That same spirit of excellence and impact was evident at BrandForge Experience '26. The event brought together creativity, innovation, talent, and inspiration in a way that reaffirmed the immense potential that exists within our community. It was more than an event; it was a statement that young people can create, build, and inspire when given the right platform. Meanwhile, the commencement of the VC's Cup has once again brought excitement to campus life. Beyond the goals, victories, and rivalries, the competition continues to foster sportsmanship, unity, and healthy engagement among students. As a new week begins, the University of Port Harcourt community has much to anticipate. Today marks the commencement of the Free Transport Initiative organized by the Uniport SUG Senate to commemorate its 10th Legislative Summit & Anniversary. On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, by 10am attention shifts to the Faculty of Law Auditorium for the 10th Legislative Summit and Anniversary. As the Student Senate celebrates a decade of leadership and impact, the summit provides an opportunity to reflect on governance, representation, and the future of student leadership. The week continues on Friday June 26, 2026 by 10am at the Old Convocation Arena with the highly anticipated Cook-a-thon organized by the SUG Chief Judge Hon. Justice Dimkpa Noble Ka-Alenebari Lah. Beyond culinary competition, the initiative promises to showcase talent, foster interaction, and celebrate the diversity that makes our campus unique. Also on Friday, laughter takes center stage as MC Olaks hosts another edition of Friday Night Laughs at Unique Luxury Hotel by 6:00pm, offering students and residents an opportunity to unwind and enjoy quality entertainment for free. As these events unfold, one thing becomes clear: a vibrant campus is built not only by policies and structures but by people, ideas, talents, and shared experiences. From the joy of a father's voice on a phone call to the excitement of sporting competitions, leadership summits, creative showcases, and comedy nights, every moment contributes to the story of our university. And at Unique Stoary, we remain committed to telling those stories. Because every campus has events. Every community has people. But every memorable moment deserves a Stoary. 212th Inaugural Lecture: Professor Emmanuel Calvin Emasealu Declares Theatre A Tool For Societal Transformation. “Theatre is not merely entertainment; it is a powerful force for cultural preservation, education, political consciousness, healing, and societal transformation.” These profound words formed the core of the 212th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Port Harcourt, delivered by the 212th Inaugural Lecturer, Professor Emmanuel Calvin Emasealu. The lecture, themed “Let Us Play,” offered a compelling intellectual exploration of theatre as more than performance, but as a dynamic tool capable of shaping humanity, preserving identity, and influencing society across generations. The event attracted dignitaries and intellectuals from all walks of life, including the Uniport Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, alongside the University Librarian, Professor Helen Emasealu, who is also the lecturer’s better half. Their presence, alongside members of the academic community, students, scholars, and distinguished guests, further underscored the significance and impact of the lecture. Professor Emasealu’s discourse was deeply insightful, thought-provoking, and academically enriching, highlighting the indispensable role of the humanities in national development and global conversations. Unique Stoary congratulates Professor Emmanuel Calvin Emasealu on this outstanding and consequential inaugural lecture, which stands as a strong reminder of the enduring power of scholarship, creativity, and intellectual engagement. 📌 Join the Unique Stoary Community on Telegram let's have real time discussions on latest happenings and matters arising in Uniport. But beyond the gowns, speeches and certificates, there is a bigger opportunity sitting right in front of the Convocation Committee — the opportunity to make this convocation feel truly Uniport. And what makes Uniport special? The people. From the halls of Abuja Campus to Delta Park, Uniport has produced some of the funniest content creators, energetic hype men, talented musicians, spoken word geniuses and campus entertainers in Nigeria. This is the time to place them at the center of the celebration. Imagine a convocation week where the atmosphere is driven by familiar campus voices and faces. Imagine MC Olaks electrifying the crowd with the kind of humor only Uniport students truly understand. Imagine Igwe of Uniport bringing his signature campus charisma into official convocation activities, creating moments that instantly go viral across social media. Now add the smooth sounds and youthful energy of Friend Zoned performing live at convocation hangouts, dinners or after-events. Add dance crews, student DJs, fashion creatives, campus photographers, podcasters and skit makers. Suddenly, convocation becomes more than a ceremony — it becomes an experience. Today’s university events are no longer judged only by attendance. They are judged by engagement, online conversations, memorable moments and cultural impact. The institutions winning globally understand this. They make students part of the story. Uniport already has the talents. What remains is intentional inclusion. The Convocation Committee, led by Professor Rosemary Ogu, DVC Academics has an opportunity to create one of the most talked-about university convocation ceremonies in Nigeria by blending academic excellence with student-driven entertainment and digital culture. This is not about reducing the prestige of convocation. It is about modernizing the experience while preserving the prestige. The laughter, performances, content creation and social media buzz will not distract from the ceremony; they will amplify it. Because the truth is simple: People may remember the speeches. But they will never forget the experience. And if there is any university capable of turning convocation into a cultural festival, it is Uniport. EDITORIAL The Beautiful Game and the Power of Purpose: A Landmark Day at Uniport. The roar of the crowd, the scent of fresh turf, and the palpable tension of a final whistle—last Friday, March 20, 2026, the University of Port Harcourt Stadium became more than just a sports arena; it was a theater of dreams. The Chief Ollor’s Football Leagues Finale wasn’t just a conclusion to a season; it was a masterclass in student engagement, community support, and the sheer, unadulterated joy of football. The "double-header" lived up to its billing, delivering two high-stakes encounters where tactical discipline outweighed reckless abandon. In the Uniport Conference League, the Young Professionals proved their name was more than a moniker. In a tight, grueling match against KIZX FC, they secured a slim but decisive 1:0 victory. The "clash of titans" promised tactical brilliance, and the Professionals delivered exactly that, locking down their defense to see the game through. The main event, the Uniport Champions League, saw the Hungry Lions face off against MCB. True to their name, the Lions displayed a predatory instinct. Despite a spirited resistance from MCB, the Lions found the back of the net to claim a 1:0 win, etching their names into the annals of Uniport sporting history. What elevated this finale was the heavy presence of University, Student Union Government, and Local Government leadership. Seeing the stadium filled to 75% capacity was a testament to the thriving sports culture on campus. The sponsor, Chief Hon. Obarilomate Ollor, Executive Chairman of Eleme LGA, didn't just provide a name for the league; he showed up. His presence, alongside the Uniport Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. C.C. Wokocha, and a robust delegation from the Uniport SUG, sent a clear message: student extracurriculars are a priority. The Uniport SUG was represented across all arms, highlighting the unified support for the tournament: - Executive Arm: Led by the SUG President, Senator Amaechi Tamunotonye Walson, and the Vice President, Comrade Etim Blessing Bassey, along with various past and present executives. - Legislative Arm: Led by the SUG Senate President, Senator Bestman Ayebaye Ilegimokuma, accompanied by a distinguished assembly of Senators. - Judicial Arm: Led by the SUG Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Dimkpa Noble La-Alenebari Lah, alongside Judges from the Judiciary. Behind the seamless execution of this sporting spectacle was the tireless work of the Uniport SUG Director of Sports, Comrade Bolarinwa David Olaniyi, and his dedicated team. It is one thing to have a vision; it is another to manifest it with such precision. Comrade Olaniyi has proven himself to be a bridge-builder, successfully securing the partnership of Chief Hon. Obarilomate Ollor. During a strategic launch by the Director of Sports, Chief Ollor underscored his commitment to youth development with a substantial #2,000,000 support—a feat that speaks volumes of the trust and credibility Olaniyi and his team have built within and outside the university community. Their ability to manage high-level stakeholders while keeping the grassroots student interest at heart is nothing short of exemplary. The organizers promised an entertainment experience, and they delivered. From the witty banter of Comedian Danny Spry and host MC Olaks, to the expert commentary of Uzzy D Good Guy, the atmosphere was electric. Musical performances by Eminonso & D4YG, coupled with the high-octane moves of Naira David, ensured that even during lulls in play, the energy never dipped. Crucially, the "vibe" was matched by impeccable organization. Branded water for every attendee and a visible security presence ensured that the massive crowd remained hydrated and safe—a logistical feat that stands as a tribute to the Director of Sports' commitment to excellence. The Chief Ollor’s Football Leagues Finale was a resounding success. It proved that when student leadership—driven by the proactive Comrade Bolarinwa David Olaniyi and his team—local government support, and raw talent converge, the result is nothing short of historic. The Hungry Lions and Young Professionals may have walked away with the trophies, but the entire Uniport community walked away with a renewed sense of pride. The bar for campus sports has been set. The question is: who will rise to meet it next year? _____________________________________________ We have a WhatsApp channel.
